Slippers - am I old now? (light hearted sort of).

I love my sheepskin house boots (from Celtic) which are my slippers when it’s not actual summer - I have them on now.

They’re not cheap but I’ve had these for several years now, they’re machine washable, and when the inner soles were starting to feel worn and a bit lumpy last year, I bought new insoles, also from Celtic, £15, and they feel like new again.

Witzend I could have written this. I have exactly the same ones. Three years old now so not expensive really. They are wonderful and I wear them for about 8 months of the year.

Crocs with the furry liner …warm and very washable and support the contours of the feet and good for “doing the bins”/hanging washing out.

Wooly closed in slippers can get sweaty and damp, so are not good for foot health if warn for long periods.

I Absolutely hate the look of slippers warn with day clothes personally. But if you’re not going outdoors I suppose they’re ok in the evening. (Exception made at Christmas)

Show me a proper supportive but flexible day shoe (not ballet pumps/loafers) do they exist?

If you count the ancient, tatty, elk-leather soft shoes (and two pairs of socks) that I'm wearing right now as slippers, then I have:
1. the elks (as above)
2. some falling apart wool things (ancient)
3. some specially made sheepskin soft-soled boots from Colorado (ancient)
4. some Uggs ankle boot slipper things
5. some cheap slip-ons I take when I go away
6. some thick felt Iona wool slippers
7. large crocs for when I'm still wearing my welly socks (ancient)
8. small crocs for bare feet (ancient)
9. luxury Swedish curly wool gubbinses (so posh they even have names!)

This of course means I am ANCIENT and have the fussiest feet in the world.

Only the Iona ones and the elks get used every day.

I’ve always worn this type of slipper (usually a man’s) never been able to wear backless/slip ons/mules etc.,

I'm genuinely curious - for those who say they've never worn slippers, what exactly do you wear around the house? We were never allowed to wear outdoor shoes inside - you had to take them off at the front door and put your slippers on.

My boss bought me a pair of slippers when I retired. I was most insulted especially after working for her for years and covering up for a lot of her misdoings. Should add I retired when I was 61. A bottle of perfume would have been more acceptable or a JL gift voucher.

Mine go on as soon as I get home. Always from Sainsburys and they go in the washing machine when grubby and last for ages.
And NO I don't feel old as I'm only 76!

Mine are slip on mule type, easy to slide in and out of.
Only worn in bedroom to bathroom, my mother would castigate me if she spotted me in bedroom slippers anywhere else, it had to be house shoes.

Crocs by the back door. Lace up Ecco soft shoes when I am dressed and a pair of French slippers bought for me by my daughter. They are flat and backless. Navy wool outer and inner and a wool felt sole. So warm and comfortable they come from the Charente region of France and are very quiet. Apparently were used by Louis the somethings servants to be silent and a side effect was they polished the floors at the same time. They are a pleasure to put on.

I have four pairs, all different. I have always worn them, right from a child. So I have always been old, I guess.

My young adult DC wear them too, at least when they are here as our tiled floors are hard and cold.

Oh dear, I have been an oldie all my life!! I have always worn 'proper' slippers with a rubber sole - but only with a dressing gown.

Foxie48 I'm the same cold hands and feet from meds and foot surgery plus osteo means I have blue feet. I'm not clever enough to show you but the ones I have ordered are a sort suede/sheepskin ones by Skechers on the M and S website. They have a few different colours and no pom pom or zip. I think they are Ok I chose a sort of Taupe- they have a nice dark blue pair. I hate the winter - fills me with dread.

I have always worn proper slippers any weather. I wear thick warm ankle bootie type in the winter as I hate being cold.

I am currently looking for my first pair as an adult. Unfortunately I have to take beta blockers and a side effect is very cold hands and feet. Looking for something easy to slip on and off but safe as I am up and down stairs and some of the downstairs floors are tiled, preferably available in half sizes. Any recommendations?

I bought my first pair of slippers last year as I prefer bare feet or mules, and at present strictly only wear them with my dressing gown.

I really like those. I've always hated "granny" slippers and like to be barefoot but have recently succumbed to a pair of fleece lined "Croc" type. So warm and comfortable, handy for going outside but easy to slip off when I want to sit cross-legged in my chair.

I must have been old before my time too 😁

I've always worn 'proper' slippers, even when I was a child. Nowadays, I like the boot type, with a really good sole so I can nip out to take the bins in etc without having to change them. I'm currently wearing my very tatty leopardprint ones which I've had for a good few years now, but they're going out in the bin tomorrow and I've ordered a lovely new purple pair, nice and cosy for the winter.

Oh crumbs, that’s how I felt a couple of years ago BigBertha it did feel like ‘giving in’, but toasty feet are worth it!
