Standing up for the rights of older people

I saw this on Facebook - it's a petition that asks David Lammy, the foreign secretary, to champion the rights of older people here and abroad.

We are on the cusp of there being a legal framework that would protect older people's rights, but we need to rally together to nudge David Lammy to make a statement on it.

Rights to do what?

thematterhorn Sat 28-Sept-24 15:36:55

Protect their overall human rights. Just like there's legal frameworks for children and people with disabilities, this one be new laws for all older people - across the world in including the UK - so it would cover abuse, violence and neglect against older people

plus it would tackle ageism and access to fair healthcare

Sorry, not quite sure what these rights that are peculiar to old people are. The link does not make it clear to me. Probably because I am too old to understand.

Like most people, I never sign petitions unless I fully understand what they are all about.

this outlines what the news laws would mean in-depth: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Convention_on_the_Rights_of_Older_Persons

I'm not sure that older people should have any more rights than any other adult unless they have specific needs such as a disability.

seems strange to start with the foreign secretary for this.
think he's got a few other things on his desk at the moment . . .

Don’t get this either and there’s nothing in the link. Why do I need rights because I’m old? I have the same rights as younger people.
And not being lonely isn’t a right.
Lazy and a publicity stunt.

Shouldn’t we treat ALL people with respect care and help
Just because I m considered old I don’t see what rights I need !!
I d just like to be considered a human being with the same rights as any other human being

I do wish the UN would do some real work in bringing about peace in so many regions where there is conflict instead of just posturing.

I ve never received agism as I don’t allow myself to be preserved weak just because I’m old I can do nearly as much as a young person still (more than a lot)
I don’t see how you can legislate against loneliness unless you make more affordable day centres but I d rather money was spent on youth clubs and similar to keep kids off the streets
Poverty surely poverty is universal and not just part of an older persons life
I m sorry but I won’t be signing as I don’t understand what it’s getting at

Totally agree. Apart from that, anything to do with rights, or legal matters surely is for the Home Secretary or Justice Minister, certainly not the Foreign Secretary. This is a poorly researched and put together petition, in my aged opinion

Like others I think we are the same as anyone else. More information needed I think if its considered important and relevant

Age is a protected characteristic within the Equality Act in this country. So if people are discriminated against because of age in this country there is a legal framework to cover that.

Says it all.

I've been pondering this petition. My long ago working life has got me thinking there could be something in it.

We're lucky in the UK, but a UN convention could help older folk worldwide who aren't as fortunate. We can take our daily rights for granted, but not everyone can. It might also tackle some of the subtle ageism we face without realising it.

The petition's a bit woolly (it’s obviously written for the public so they don’t say niche words like UN convention and just say legal framework). But these protections often begin on the world stage before trickling down to our doorsteps.
It could lead to some positive changes down the line.
