Turning on the heat

I’m surprised no one has asked yet. Here in the south the rain has stopped today but we had a full-on frost last night and I switched on my heating for a couple of hours this morning.
A ‘heating expert’ has said our homes should be 18 to 21 degrees for health and comfort and manageable fuel bills.
My thermostat is rarely above 15 in winter and I couldn’t afford to have it higher. I don’t believe being chilly does us any harm, it’s just uncomfortable.
Modern houses are much warmer. Is your heating on and how high?

Maggiemaybe Sat 28-Sept-24 20:10:00

We just click ours on in mid-afternoon at the moment when it starts to feel a bit chilly. Off again at 10 o’clock. 18 degrees feels about right.

When it’s proper cold we set it to come on automatically at 0930h and go off at 10, but we’re not there yet.

Anybody bought heating oil recently? I ordered 500 litres this week and it was nearly £100 cheaper than same amount in March. 👍

We got ours a few months ago. And yes, quite a bit cheaper than the previous time we bought it.

This isnt the best link, but you hopefully get the picture.

Our heating is set at 20 all the time but rarely clicks on at the moment. So, although it is on, it is rarely working.

HeavenLeigh Sat 28-Sept-24 20:20:59

Ours is never off either set to 20 and kicks in also when necessary.

I don’t think any replies on threads like this would change anyone’s mind about how they manage their own heating. Just as some love to holiday in hot climes and some, myself included, detest warm weather, some people like warm houses and some don’t.

I can light the fire but I don’t use the oil central heating unless there’s a real risk of pipes bursting. I use a heated throw and wear warm clothes and slippers. My house is well ventilated, cooler temperatures don’t seem to cause problems with condensation. It’s a very comfortable (to me) 15.4 here in my sitting room, and having spent the morning dog-sitting in a house set at 22.5, I much prefer mine!

I never have heating in the bedroom, I like a warm bed but in a cool room.

paddyann54 Sat 28-Sept-24 20:26:14

Ours has been on for 3 weeks there’s been a hard frost at night ,car windscreen needs scraped in the morning and the temperature has dropped as soon as the sun( when it appears) goes down .Its freezing today even my cats won’t stay out

Shinamae Sat 28-Sept-24 20:38:37

Not yet
Thermostat is set at 15, but I do have a gas fire in my lounge/bedroom, but I haven’t had to put that on either..

biglouis Sat 28-Sept-24 20:39:55

I noticed it was bitterly cold yesterday when I went outside (well wrapped up) to do a photo shoot. It was chilly again this morning when the regular Tesco man arrived and he asked how I was. Im in the North West.

As I have mobility issues and very painful arthritis I am not going to economise of heating. One of the advantages of running a business from home is that you can load part of the cost of expenses like heating, lighting, broadband. phone etc onto your allowable expenses. I make full use of that.

Jane43 Sat 28-Sept-24 20:43:15

We have had the heating on today for the first time this year. Our thermostat is set at 18 degrees for when the heating is on twice a day and today it showed 15 degrees before the heating on period so DH switched it on. I don’t feel the cold badly but DH does as he is now on blood thinners so I leave it for him to decide.

crazyH Sat 28-Sept-24 20:49:32

Same here - heat and food are my priority expenditure.

bridie54 Sat 28-Sept-24 20:55:26

I don't care what month it is. I'm in Scotland and if it's cold the heating is on but just now, only to 18 degrees. I put it on tonight to sit downstairs and watch Strictly.
My nephew set the timer for me in January for when I was in NZ for 6 weeks and I haven't re-set it. I'm usually upstairs in the evenings where it's warmer.
I'd rather be hungry than cold!

henetha Sat 28-Sept-24 23:37:42

My CH isn't on yet, but my electric fire in the living room is on for a couple of hours in the evenings.

avitorl Sun 29-Sept-24 00:09:25

I keep my thermostat at 18 degrees all through the year, night and day,and increase it to 22 degrees if I am sitting and feel chilly at 18.
I also have a heated throw which I love and it makes a huge difference to how comfortable I feel. I have always felt the cold even as a child and it was something of a family joke how many layers I would wear to go to bed.

Catterygirl Sun 29-Sept-24 00:51:58

We’re renting and don’t have access to a thermostat. Cold or extra cold is the order of the day.

karmalady Sun 29-Sept-24 08:01:09

Upstairs has only one thermostat, on the landing but every room has a TRV on the radiators. The landing thermostat is always set at 18 and I can turn rads off in any unused upstairs room. There is no mould or damp in my house. I generally don`t leave any washing to air dry inside and the thermostat has not switched on yet

My sewing room is upstairs and my dyson heater will be in there, it will be warm in seconds and has a very efficient thermostat

Downstairs is very different, underfloor heating all over and 4 area thermostats. Utility and hall are set at 18, the kitchen/diner at 19 and the living room at 20. No area has needed ch yet. I have an efficient multi-fuel stove in my living room with an ecofan. I just leave the room doors open if I want gentle heat everywhere from the stove. That stove is serviced, flue swept. a large amount of logs and smokeless eggs in storage. I have not had any need to light it yet

Clothes and layers first for me, hand knitted woollen socks, warm tights, wool jumpers in particular and silk vests. It is just common sense

Allsorts Sun 29-Sept-24 08:08:53

15 is too cold but know some have no alternative. I did try to manage until the 01 October but was so cold I have it on at 18 background. Could really do with 21 but I have a smart meter and it’s frightening seeing the pounds mounting up each hour.
Another 6 months if it too.

HelterSkelter1 Sun 29-Sept-24 08:17:27

The bitter cold coming from the North was forecast. Hopefully the wind will swing round to come from the west soon and it will be warmer. DH needs to be warm and breathe warm air so the heating goes on and stays on to keep him warm. The bills will be high and I blame the energy companies. But we need the heat so we economise elsewhere as and where we can. I would love to have a more eco friendly house in the future. But moving is not possible currently from our Victorian rather draughty house. It does stay wonderfully cool in the summer though!!

Georgesgran Sun 29-Sept-24 08:18:22

Last Monday I was going to meet my friend in Costa for coffee. As I got out of the car, I realised I’d stupidly left my jacket at home - it was really cold. Inside, I noticed I was the only person in the cafe without a coat …….. until my friend rocked up in a low cut, sleeveless top! Even strangers stopped to comment and ask if she was cold! Unlike me, she doesn’t seem to ‘feel the cold’ as seen by her low heating bills.

jusnoneed Sun 29-Sept-24 08:21:58

We don't have central heating, just a gas fire in the living room. That is rarely used before November, the last couple of years haven't used it much until Jan/Feb time. If it is on it's never until afternoon or early evening, then once OH goes up to watch tv in his room I turn it off and just use my fleecy cover.
When it's colder my OH has an oil radiator in his bedroom as does my son (he's just buying his own house so will be off soon) but I don't have any heat in mine. I sleep with a window open all year round.
At the moment there are still open windows through the house. Certainly not cold enough to think about needing heat.

Dickens Sun 29-Sept-24 09:05:52

We're really a mixed bunch on GN aren't we - there's the apparently hale-and-stalwart jusnoneed with no central heating and open windows freshening up her home, then there's my OH shuffling around on his Zimmer permanently draped in his thick cardi (he's not actually on GN but is always curious to know what "the grans" think about various political issues).

It would be good if everyone - old and young - could turn on their heating as and when it was needed to the degree that is comfortable for them, day or night regardless of the season, but until we address the real causes of 'energy-poverty', nothing will change.

Georgesgran Sun 29-Sept-24 09:07:29

Blimey justnoneed. Where are you?

kircubbin2000 Sun 29-Sept-24 09:09:09

We haven't really had summer here so I have put the heat on every day when needed. Today it it 16 and I have put it on and will stay in bed until its over 18. If I'm sitting in I turn it to 21.5.

Georgesgran Sun 29-Sept-24 09:21:21

Amazon sell room thermometers with humidity readings from £3.99 Catterygirl if you want to buy one. Very small and you could move it from room to room.

Grandmabatty Sun 29-Sept-24 09:25:44

Like Bridie, I live in Scotland which is generally colder than further south. But it's the combination of cold and damp that seeps into my bones and causes the heating to go on. We get a lot of rain. I try not to have it on in the morning just yet but it goes on for an hour or so late afternoon and evening
