Anyone having a party 🎉?

Seriously though, what is the point of these ‘days.’!

Locally there is a day for older people locally, went last year and there were lots of organizations there . They were groups that people might not know about, with details about them and how to use their services if you felt you needed them.
I went last year (and am able to go again this year) it's no bad thing to showcase organizations that might be helpful, if not for us at the moment, maybe to friends, relatives or neighbours

It’s today, our day. Hooray. 🥳
I think they might mean you kitty, grin

Can't have been that great, never heard of it and it passed without me knowing, mind you I didn't get any cards or gifts either wink

In my seventies - but don’t think they mean me!

I’m having a Twix to celebrate, in fact I may have two.

Each year on 1st October, people across the world mark United Nations International Day of Older People to raise awareness of opportunities and challenges faced by ageing populations, and to mobilize the wider community to address difficulties faced by older people.

I still remember the year they invented 'Grandparens day' in 1990. My DD was born that year and the day they chose happened to fall on MiL's birthday in September! She seemed to think they had invented it especially for her! Thankfully it didn't last! I think we bought a card for the first 2 years then it fizzled out.

Never heard of it. I'm surprised it hasn't been commercialised. Cards, pressies, a voucher for incontinence pads, old people's lunches with a free pack of Rennies...

According to the Rose Park in Milton Keynes 1 October is Older Person's Day, the pillar has an inscription "Grow old with me! The best is yet to be." Robert Browing
Very apt for me - I get my pension tomorrow 1 October smile

Older than what? 65;70,80 etc is it so they can ignore us the rest of the year. Oh well perhaps we will all get an extra blanket so we can stay warm this winter.❄️💨

It's an improvement on Clear your Desk Day.

I heard the announcement on r4 and was sure they said it was today. Just checked and it was started by the UN so not an excuse by the cardmaking industry to make a bit more ££. Yes it’s on Tuesday so a second chance to celebrate. 🥳 happy days.

I had never heard of it either, yet it’s been going on ( very quietly) for over 30 years.
Get that champagne 🍾 back in the fridge…

Mollygo Sun 29-Sept-24 16:01:39

I’d never heard of it before.
Maybe that’s why I received a Moonpig parcel from an anonymous donor today. I’m waiting for someone to call and see if it’s arrived before I open it.

Grannybags Sun 29-Sept-24 15:47:42

I think you’re early with the celebrations. Radio 4 told me it was 1st October…

I’ll have to put the champagne on ice!!

silverlining48 really! Can't imagine my AC acknowledging thatgrin

silverlining48 Sun 29-Sept-24 11:24:06

Just mentioned this special international day for older people to my AC who responded with how stressed they are.

So our special day will be home alone as usual..with a glass of something …as usual smile

Cheers to us all wine

Yippee. Must have a cigar to celebrate.

😁or a glass of bubbly.
Well, why shouldn’t we have a Seniors Day, after all there’s a day for just about everything else.🤔

MiniMoon Sun 29-Sept-24 10:44:26

If I mention it at the hotel we are going to for Sunday lunch, do you think we'll be offered a discount or a free dessert?
I'm not hopeful!

Allira Sun 29-Sept-24 10:25:28

Oh! Who knew? Must be why DS has invited the Oldies for dinner 🎉🎊🎈

there is an event here, but next sunday 6th, for ageing well, called silver sunday.
they had 600+ attend last year.
probably for the free food, and warm space.
that's what i'll probably go for, (sits here in just gone up to 54F, will have to go out, move about, to get warmer).

I didn’t know and now that I do am no better off.
So silly having all these different days. Must have been a slow day in the office when someone dreamed this up.

Indeed!!
