So enjoying current, worse present ever, made me think about my best present ever, my beloved mother-in-law gave me enormous wrapped present just a few days before my wedding, the most beautiful fur jacket, she said, thought you’d like that more than a set of saucepans!! I so did😀

When I was leaving work to have my first baby, amongst all the gorrgeous baby presents, including the pram, somebody gave me a pretty new nightdress and some lovely 'smellies' just for me.

DH for a birthday bought me a small pointed trowel with a wooden handle and brass fixings in a little leather scabbard. It was an old one from a 2nd hand shop...but perfectly balanced and useful. I use it constantly.

My wonderful cochlear implant was switched on on my birthday. The most life changing thing ever, I’d been profoundly deaf for several years. Magical!

My green Hercules bicycle for Christmas when I was eight. The freedom he gave me was wonderful.
I fell in love with my current bike because it reminded me of him.

Without meaning to be selfish, the best present I ever received was from me to me as I bought myself a ticket to the Everly Brothers Reunion Concert at the Royal Albert Hall in 1983.

I was 18 and had worshipped them for years! I was buzzin' for weeks afterwards!

My husband came home with a yellow Fiat 500, I loved it!

I forgot the lovely ring dh gave me right after dd2 was born - emerald and diamonds. I’d never had an engagement ring* so it was extra special.

*to dh at the time, ‘getting engaged’ was desperately uncool! I wasn’t really bothered though.

When we finally moved into our first house after six years of saving and living in rented flats, my aunt gave us two British Blue kittens. I don't really approve of giving animals as presents but they turned out to be the gift that kept on giving.

My lovely tortoise. I chose her from a pile of other tortoises in a box underneath a fruit and veg stall in the local market and carried her home cupped in my little hands. It was my 5th birthday and she cost 2/6d! I still have her 62 years later!

In the 1960s when I was 12 my lovely Dad arrived home from town and presented me with a Dansette record player. He’d paid money weekly into a savings club at his factory job and when he reached his goal he withdrew the cash and bought the record player. It was a complete surprise and I couldn’t believe it was mine. It was a lovely red one with a carry handle 😊

For my 60th birthday DH took the family to Paris for a weekend, and DS gave me a hot air balloon flight which he shared with me. Both were wonderful experiences and now treasured memories.

Was it all fur and no knickers🤣🤣🤣

Haha that would be telling😀

DD3 & her family are temporarily living with me. DGD’s boyfriend (all of 15!) is often here for evening meals. Last night the doorbell went and this lovely, shy boy was on the doorstep with a bouquet of lilies. ‘Thank you ‘Marmight’ for feeding me’! It was such a lovely gesture and so heartfelt. Simple but one of the best presents ever!

Best I had lately was a totally unexpected one from Gdd1, 9. We were all at a very busy evening market at a little town in France, all the six cousins were off exploring on their own, but at some point she came up and said ‘I’ve bought a present for you, Granny’ - it was a bar of lovely hand made lavender soap. 😍

A day’s professional fly fishing tuition. He had organised it for my birthday after remembering how taken I was with watching someone fishing in a river in Ireland, and thought I might like to try it. It set me off on a wonderful absorbing pastime that I have loved ever since. Sadly my mobility is such these days that I’m on the verge of giving it up.

Was it real fur though?

Yes it was, blonde, caramel colour. As it was 1970, guess it wasn’t so awful to wear fur as it is now.

That would have been my worst present ever! I remember we used to have two old fur coats which had belonged to my grannies - my dad used them to lag the water tank!

So great that we are all so different 😀

MrR bought me a meal on The Orient Express for my 60th. It was amazing!

I’ve been lucky, I’ve had some lovely presents. For my 60th birthday my three children gave me a three night trip to Italy with tickets to see Andrea Bocelli perform in his home village, which he did every year (I don’t know if he still does.) They booked a lovely hotel and a hire car for us. This really was the most wonderful surprise that I have never forgotten.

I’ve had other really nice gifts from my husband and my children, and in later life, also from my parents. The last gift they gave me was my lovely new i20, this week borrowed by my DiL, but bought with the legacy they left me. I regard it as a gift from them, even though they’d already gone when I bought it. When I drive it I remember them with love, and wish I could take them out for a drive in it.

I’m very lucky and I appreciate everything that I’ve been gifted.

For my 60th birthday, younger son bought me one of those trays with legs for eating in bed. I love it. It comes in useful if I’m having a day in bed feeling under the weather. He said he heard me admire one on an old Poirot. For my 70th he bought me a globe, which I love. My other children buy wonderful presents too, but younger son is the Master. He wraps them beautifully too.

My first dog she was worth everything to me. I fell in love with a little girl and Dad had promised my Mom that he would only bring home a boy dog. His words were like magic to me when he said, "Dont worry I will square it with your Mom" boy was he in trouble but she soon fell in love with her.

Back in 1959, our parents gave my sister and I a transistor radio each for Christmas. At the time these were very new and in England very expensive, the equivalent of £s many hundreds.

But my parents were living in Malaya and in the Far East these kinds of electronic devices, mainly made in Japan, were a fraction of a price they were in the UK, we had flown home to Malaya from our boarding school in England where the possession ofjust such a transistor radio was the dream of every girl.

We flew home for the Easter term, and for once we were in the exclusive clique of those that had something that everyone else wanted but couldn't afford, but within less than a year prices plummetted and everybody had a radio, but for that short time DS and I were the envy of all.

I’m not adding much to the thread as I can’t really think of a best present tbh but will enjoy reading what others write.
