My first reaction to the thought of a long period of time on a cruise ship...especially as I have never even spent a short time on one...was no thank you.
But on thinking about it, well maybe. At the moment home circumstances would prevent it, but in the future I wonder.
A whole year? Would I fall out with other passengers? Would I feel completely claustrophobic? Or would once I was used to it enjoy a year of being kept warm, fed and watered? I could switch off from the world by not reading papers or watching the news. Exercised by walking the decks and swimming. Could read. Learn to paint. Learn a language. Make a new friend or 2. I would need a balcony and light.

Could you?

She appears docked at Bilbao so maybe they can gave a stroll.

I expect the ship will go ashore at times, isn't that what cruises do? I don't know, but could be a way to see different places, Belfast seems to have been good to them. I think cats often lived on ships in the past, as mousers and they probably adapted fine. I think it seemed like they were all being positive, which is something I'd like in my future, but I'd rather be going home at some point too. It amazes me how people from the US are either avid travellers or have never had a passport. This lot would rather be anywhere else but the USA it seems.....

It's left Brest and now on it's way to Bilbao.

I've been using vessel finder to see where the Odyssey is going. Not very fast anyway! We left Dublin yesterday afternoon to sail to Cherbourg - arrived around midday today. Odyssey is still pottering along - not in Brest yet. I suppose cruise ships don't go as fast as ferries, but they're obviously not in a hurry!

The longer they stay out if ports the less it costs.

My cousin is CEO of one of the biggest and most exclusive travel businesses. About 10 years ago I asked him what their largest booking was.

A couple booked cruises which lasted a year and they had the best suite, their own butler, they were helicoptered on and off the ships and they had the best of everything. I can’t remember now what it cost but it was many hundreds of thousands.

Apparently they were both top surgeons and very wealthy. The husband suddenly became very ill, had life saving surgery and they vowed that when he was well enough they would take a whole year off together for him to recuperate fully. His wife knew that if they were at home he would not rest properly so she booked it all to guarantee they spent time together and didn’t have to lift a finger. I thought what a great idea if money is no object.

Allira Fri 04-Oct-24 22:43:30

Of course! The ship's cat - keeps down the mice 😂

Allira Fri 04-Oct-24 22:43:03

A cat on a ship??

kircubbin2000 Fri 04-Oct-24 20:59:40

One poor woman couldn't go far as she has her cat with her and he wasn't allowed off the ship.

merlotgran Fri 04-Oct-24 18:31:06

Perhaps it only goes in bottom gear! 😂

You can go for a lot of walks
But Nana8 the same walk every day!!! (for those on Odyessa long term for a year, 2 years, for ever !!!)

They do stop at ports.

I am aware Allira 😳 I m thinking of everyday normal times between any visits

You can go for a lot of walks. It is approximately a mile just walking once round the top deck with the ones we go on. Nothing better than the wind in your hair watching the sea. Not that many bother so you have space to yourselves !

I guess the ship is old enough to have been sold on several times to other cruise lines, along with a change of name.

I remember reading that one passenger had gone on another short cruise while they were stuck in Belfast !
Others used the opportunity to travel around the UK.

^but then a very over excited American woman on board said the next port of call is Scotland!^

Why wait all those months? They could have just got on a ferry. 😂

Or got the train?

RosiesMaw2 Thu 03-Oct-24 20:53:10

I’m worried about their navigator’s sense of direction confusedconfused 🚢

It's changed it's mind about Scotland, it's en route to Brest

Perhaps somebody told them they weren’t going to Brigadoon.

kircubbin2000 Thu 03-Oct-24 20:09:50

It's heading south on vessel finder.

I wonder if it has left yet.

Despite how expensive it is to cruise on this ship I was a bit surprised to see it’s an old Fred Olsen cast-off, the Braemar!

There’s the problem It’s unlucky to change the name of a boat.
I hated the name of my second boat but no way was I going to change it.

The Braemar? Previously it was also the Crown Dynasty, I think.

There seems to be some confusion about where they are going next.
The BBC news said France, but then a very over excited American woman on board said the next port of call is Scotland!

A magical mystery tour.
Actually I believe there are some cruises like that where the destination is unknown to the passengers!

It's going to Fairlie in North Ayrshire to refuel then it's going to France.
