I have been listening to this recently. The more you listen, the more you hear it seems. It is very moving, written all those years ago, I think around 1690. Do you have any pieces of music or songs you have ‘rediscovered’ ?

I went to YouTube to listen again to Pachebels canon and one of my saved videos came up. This is Vivaldi and I love to watch this joyful rendition whenever I need to put a smile on my face.

The first video that came up for the canon was this one I'd not seen before.

I love the Five Variants of Dives and Lazarus by Vaughan Williams, its just so hauntingly beautiful.
Another favourite, and completely different is Highland Cathedral played by Andrè Rieu and his Johan Strauss orchestra.

Rosie I remember seeing that and grinning with joy all the way through it. They look so happy. Good to catch up with it again!

Pachebel's Canon was the piece chosen by DIL when she walked down the aisle with her lovely Dad.

Some lovely pieces on here bringing back memories.

Another one I like is Fingal's Cave by Mendelssohn.

I love Pachebel's Canon fron the moment I first heard discovered it, whenever that was.

Yes TerriBull (great name by the way, love a punny! )
My father was a wonderful musician & introduced us kids to some wonderful, soul expanding music; such as Pachebel's Cannon for which I will be forever grateful. Even though he was an absolute mad man. confused

DD came down the aisle at her wedding to 'Highland Cathedral' on the bagpipes. Wonderful tune. My heart lifts every time I hear it.

Drop, Drop slow tears by Orlando Gibbons = wonderful

There are a few pieces of music that I really like but Pachelbel Canon became my favourite the first time I heard it. It’s hard to believe it was written so long ago.
I was on a course and it was played at the end of the session.

First time I heard the Canon I thought 'that's the piece of music I would like playing when I leave this world'! It annoys me when some performers play it far too fast though. Highland Cathedral I love. I have Classic FM on a lot, but confess there is some more modern music I am not keen on, such as some Aaron Copeland or Benjamin Britten.

I think I first noticed Pachelbel’s Canon when it was used in the film ‘Ordinary People’ which starred Donald Sutherland and Mary Tyler Moore, about 40 odd years ago.

Have loved it ever since.

This is a lovely thread with plenty of pieces of music to listen to. I shall write them all down. Thank you OP

A lovely piece of Mozart is ‘Soave sai il vento’ - May the Winds be Gentle, from Cosi Fan Tutti. I want it played at my funeral (not yet though, hopefully!!).

The title didn’t ring a bell so I looked on YouTube - only to find that it was very familiar. But as so often, I hadn’t known what it was called.

A favourite of mine is Panis Angelicus, but so far I’ve never quite heard a version to equal a niece’s solo with her school choir - she has a very lovely, pure soprano. We have it on CD and played it at my mother’s funeral.

have to admit pachelbels canon is one of my all time favourites, would have it at my funeral except am having direct cremation

Vivaldis' Gloria is a great one for me. Faure's Requium. Elgars Nimrod is a real tear jerker as it always brings to mind my long dead father, killed in WW2. I never knew him, so goodness knows why I feel so affected by this piece, but I do. Love Vaughn Williams, and so many others.

I love Pachelbel Canon. My daughter had it played at her wedding. If I have a funeral I would like it played then.

I love Vaugan Williams Fantasy on a theme by Thomas Tallis. Besides finding it moving it is very calming. I also like Chasing cars by Snow Patrol, though I find it extremely difficult to listen too. For some reason it makes me extremely sad.

That's interesting, you have chosen exactly my favourites, and described them exactly as I would have.😊

Erik Satie's Gymnopedie and/or Gnossienne(s), Pachelbel's Canon, Farewell to Stromness, almost anything by Handel,

To lift my spirits - Widor's Toccata in D, Jeremiah Clarke - Prince of Denmark' March aka Trumpet Voluntary.

My absolute favourite piece of music is by a modern composer called Arvo Pärt. It’s called Spiegel Im Spiegel, and I heard it first on Emmerdale of all places and was so entranced by it I did a bit of research and managed to find it.
Its a piece for written for piano and cello but it could be violin instead of cello. It’s a haunting piece and very repetitive but I love it. It’s 10 minutes long. Just right for playing as people walk out of my funeral.

Love this thread. I’m going to listen to some of these pieces again.

Have a listen to mine and tell me what you think. It just takes me somewhere when I need to relax and clear my head.

Sorry I can’t do links.

Been listening to some Kristofferson in his memory. Sunday Morning Coming Down with Johnny Cash. Then got onto the old Tom Paxton - Outward Bound.

I had Pachelbel's Canon in D playing in the background as my last baby was born in the early hours of the morning. Simply beautiful.
I'm surprised no one has mentioned the Amazon Prime advert which uses Concrete Jungle by Christine and the Queens (a version set to Pachelbel's Canon and with cleaned up lyrics)

But if I could choose the music playing for me at the gates of heaven, it would be Gabriel's Oboe from The Mission.

Usually on the same LP as Pachelbel's Canon I love Albinoni's Adagio in G minor and the story behind it. A few staves of music were found in a bombed out library in Dresden after the war and Italian musicologist Giazotto reconstructed the piece from the fragments. Everyone will know it. I love it.
