I’m due to start exercise class next week namely Pilates and suffer from gut problems I’m sure you can guess where this is going, while I really looking forward to going I’m going to be mortified if I break wind, has anyone else had this happen when in a class. The meds I’m on actually cause a lot of gas sadly

Ah, memories of Greatgrandma Clara. Could trump like a Clydesdale, but deaf as a post, so blissfully unaware!

Aveline then there's this one -
Pardon me for being rude
It was not me it was my food.

M0nica Wed 09-Oct-24 21:37:10

Aveline grin

I have been going to Pilates every week for nine years and have never experienced a wind problem. I am quite a windy person in general with dairy intolerance and a liking for beans and cruciferous veg. Pilates is wonderful and I hope you really enjoy your class HeavenLeigh.

Heavenleigh, I saw a programme on Channel 4 called "Know your Sh1t" or something similar, it was very enlightening. I suddenly realised I had dairy intolerance which caused loud, smelly wind. I changed to soya milk for my porridge, made all the difference.

😂

This reminds me of a poem my late great aunt once told me. Only ladies if a certain age will remember the penny needed for the loo in some places.
Here I sit broken hearted,
Paid my penny,
Only farted.

I go to yoga classes and usually have a devil of a job trying not to pass wind.
It’s awful. I suffer from IBS too.

Whiff Wed 09-Oct-24 17:43:59

kwest porridge doesn't make you wet yourself.y mom had porridge for her breakfast and even when the dementia killed my mom and her body lived she always told me she needed the commode. She never wet or soiled herself.

I been having porridge every morning for breakfast since my husband died 20.5 years. I am 66 and not once wet myself .

I don't understand why you equate porridge with your mom wetting herself .

Bellanonna Wed 09-Oct-24 17:20:46

HeavenLeigh please do the class. I love Pilates and I’m sure you’ll enjoy it too. The person next to me at one time always passed wind (I’m so polite! 😇) when we lay on our backs and had to roll back. Nobody took any notice. You won’t be the only one with the odd escape. Others have recommended remedies so you could try those. These days i have to do a bit of clenching when I stand up from seated (84 last week, so kind of inevitable). Do let us know how the class goes and don’t worry about nature’s way of expelling surplus air. You will feel much fitter after doing Pilates for a while.

Tell the instructor your fears.
On first doing Pilates had the same problem, you might find the pelvic floor exercises at the beginning will over time address this to some extent.
Be careful what u eat the night before and the day of the class.
But….. it happens frequently, it’s only a fart. You haven’t injured anyone. And enjoy the classes.
Best thing I ever started

I've been very wary of porridge since my elderly m-i-l told me she used to have her porridge before walking to the newsagent in the morning to collect her paper. On several occasions she had found herself weeing into her shoes. I am now in my late 70s and she was much the same age when it happened to her, so I stick to wholemeal toast and butter for breakfast and my husband collects the papers every morning.

I too have gut problems so I don't eat after six in the evening before my Pilates Class or have any breakfast that morning. It works for me.

Gannyannie Wed 09-Oct-24 11:56:36

Almost every class I go to somebody does it ,no body takes any notice at all , so don't worry at all perfectly natural. I think you will love pilates.

Athrawes Wed 09-Oct-24 11:29:18

I do rehab Pilates. Each person has their own exercise to do and as we're a little way apart there is no 'wind' problem to be heard especially if the windows are open!!!!
I also do ChairYoga which is good fun - and again we're well spaced out in case we bonk someone in the face and there's no wind problem to worry about!!!

HeavenLeigh I go to sit fit class . We do exercises sitting down, standing behind the chair and walking. We did the conga up and down the church aisle it was fun. We do sit to stand and sometimes I fart as we have to lower over bums slowly down on to the chair but I am not the only one . When we do squats I fart . But I am not a noisy farter.
My daughter says some fart during yoga depends on the position.

Everyone farts if we didn't we would explode . Don't worry about it just enjoy the exercises and I find because we encourage eachother we get a mental wellbeing as well as a body workout ..

Lisaangel10 Tue 08-Oct-24 21:57:46

The aqua aerobics class I went to this week was so energetic and noisy that nobody would have noticed a few farts.

Esmay Tue 08-Oct-24 21:14:59

One of my friends used to play the trumpet voluntary all the way through our yoga class .
Poor thing .
She was mortified .
Eventually we laughed .
She laughed .
Don't worry .
Prior to your exercise class lie in a warm bath and massage your tummy to move the gas along .
You can also drink peppermint tea .
Ask your Pharmacist for some tablets to stop it .

ExDancer Tue 08-Oct-24 21:05:27

Please don't be embarrassed about it. One bonus of age is that everyone's the same and you learn to laugh about it.
Actually its important that you continue to make wind, After my daughter in law had an operation for bowel cancer, the nurses waited in great anticipation for her first fart.
But back to you.
As already suggested, stick to the back row to start with and try to control the wind. I'm sure as the weeks pass and you get to know people you'll realise there are others just like you, and also people with urinary and even faecal problems too.
Enjoy your classes.

Gwyllt Tue 08-Oct-24 19:57:46

Before. Monica passed comment I was going to assure you you won’t be on your own. Just enjoy the class

M0nica Tue 08-Oct-24 19:41:14

Happens quite a bit in people of all ages ate exercise classes, me included. Normally it is just ignored, nothing said and the class continues to move on smoothly.

perhaps you could make sure you are at the back of the class with just the wall and not another exerciser behind you. In a pilates class, or in my case Tai Chi class, we are all well spread out.

V3ra Tue 08-Oct-24 18:52:16

Have you tried peppermint oil capsules? I find them very effective.
I buy mine from Healthspan and take one a day.
I agree about the porridge though 😬
Shame as it's good for our cholesterol levels.

Witzend Tue 08-Oct-24 18:52:08

That’s one reason I stick to swimming - nobody’s going to notice any extra bubbles while I do my lengths!

foxie48 Tue 08-Oct-24 18:43:33

HeavenLeigh I'm pleased! Have a great time and enjoy yourself. Pilates is wonderful exercise, I've done it for years. Thing to remember is your body type and shape will make some exercises easier or some more difficult, so don't compare yourself with anyone else. It took me a while to realise that because I have long legs and a short body I can struggle with some things but find other things easy peasy.

HeavenLeigh Tue 08-Oct-24 12:41:46

No, sadly can’t change my tabs I’m afraid, Exdancer. Thank you I will have to buy some of the tabs you are suggesting, a.so thinking I can’t have my usual protein yogurt with fresh fruit that I normally eat for breakfast either or porridge lol
Oh foxie48 you have made me laugh. I’ve never been to a exercise class before and really looking forward to it
