DH and I mused to-day about what we would do if we had someone in to do our cleaning . Many years ago we had a lady for two hours a week and we just left her to it and went off shopping . I really do not like anyone else working in our house but we might have to at some point . I had a relative who spent most of the time her cleaner was working in her bathroom giving herself beauty treatments while my friend , who is over 90 , works alonside her cleaner .

When I was ill a couple of years ago I couldn’t carry the Hoover upstairs so asked a neighbour to help. I knew she did odd jobs for other people. She still comes once a fortnight. I pay her way beyond the going rate because she didn’t ask for the job.

You'd probably get more replies if you started a new thread, Karen22.

The best thing for my skin is a bag over my head, these days, so I can't even advise.

You could make a new thread in the chat forum, as that seems to get most attention.

I need a cleaner as I’m no longer able to keep up with my back problems and really hate cleaning one room at a time every day or other day. My house is never totally clean all at once - which is what prefer, of course.

I used to have a cleaner that would come every other week for the afternoon while I was at work. She came highly recommended and I totally trusted her. Then, I lost her to my boss who kind of stole her away in a good way. My personal situation was changing and I was able to segue her into another client.

My favorite cleaning team was four ppl come together (a family business, always the same four) - each one takes a room (and a plus) - intensive clean each room - in one hour they’re done and gone. They were like a cleaning machine! Worth every penny! I had them every 3 or 4 weeks. (I can do inbetween cosmetic clean). Perfect.

My mother-in-law's cleaner also has her own insurance and everything is paid into her business account.

She is picky with products and does a lot of "traditional scrubbing" it seems to me.

Ziggy62 when I'm not here, things get missed I've noticed. Chairs not being moved etc 🙄

Ha ha Kate - we don't speak to the others obviously!!

Mine comes once a week for 2hours. She does the stairs, kitchen floor and bathroom/loos every time and alternates between upstairs and downstairs. If there is any spare time she asks if there is anything I want her to do (eg clean out the fridge).

Sometimes the cleaning person, I use the term as lady may be construed as discrimination, is a lifeline to the community and the only contact an individual has with the 'outside' world. Socialisation is very important in all our lives. I work in Social Care looking after vulnerable adults and know the value of socialisation . From reading the posts, it appears that the relationship between the cleaner and the 'employer' is very important.

I think most of us are pretty positive about our/our family's cleaners, Scottishgogo. I certainly am.

One of my oldest friends used cleaning to keep her family solvent (as a single parent through both her BA and MA). It was a lifeline for her too.

As someone who worked as a cleaner, many years ago, for a titled lady, I just got on with the job, she made me coffee. I needed 2 days a week to complete the total cleaning of the house. At the time, it was a lifeline to my income. Don't knock being a cleaner. Cleaners (good ones ) are worth their weight in gold!

We have a lovely European cleaner who has been with us for about 3 years. She comes for 3 hours once a month. We never know if she stays 3 hours as we go out for the morning.

I’m glad you have ‘sane’ people where you live Kitty 😀

kittylester Sat 12-Oct-24 07:21:25

Mine is chatty too, and we live in the same village so know lots of the sane people, so have lots to talk about. She continues to do her work while we catch up.

I am 75 yrs young but still need a cleaner. She whizzes around my little bungalow my lovely lady cleaner and she can’t do enough for me, she’ll even change my bed and one other too. My whole house is spotless thanks to her. She comes once a week for 2 hrs and I wouldn’t be without her, she’ll go to the bank for me too, she’s so trustworthy I love her to bits.

Mt62 no not meaning to imply she talks too much. We just chat as she does her thing and I do mine. I suppose it's quite a lonely job as often she cleans houses when their owners are away. She's just friendly which is fine by me.

NotSpaghetti Sat 12-Oct-24 00:05:07

My mother-in-law's fantastic cleaner came by personal recommendation.

I think that's the way.

Mine comes for 2 hours a week. She's very thorough and a chatty wee thing. I usually do any jobs that I can get on with or just read the papers or make phone calls. I'm quite comfortable with her working away.

Is that a hint she talks too much?

Allira Fri 11-Oct-24 22:00:38

*Allira*, don't - just don't.

😁

Strange, isn't it.

You put clean cutlery away in a clean drawer so where do the crumbs come from?

MissAdventure Fri 11-Oct-24 21:00:02

One of life's mysteries.
The amount of crumbs in the cutlery drawer.

kittylester Fri 11-Oct-24 20:05:30

Allira, don't - just don't.

Allira Fri 11-Oct-24 19:51:07

Oh! I'll look at mine blush

mabon1 Fri 11-Oct-24 17:07:45

My friend has a cleaner. She reminded her to clean the cutlery drawer every week!!! Friend wasn't amused that it wasn't part of her two-hour sessions. I ask you ?????

MissAdventure Fri 11-Oct-24 16:52:17

My cleaner is worse at cleaning than I am.
She is a friend, though, so it makes it difficult.

rowyn Fri 11-Oct-24 16:42:57

If only.... trouble is, I'm not very good at cleaning so I would be rather embarrassed to let a professional see all my shortcomings!

Out of curiosity, and I know houses vary hugely in size - how long would it take to hoover, dust and mop the average house?

Our home is cleaned by a 2 women team - 2 hrs a week. I hoover dog hair daily. We pick up all clutter daily and do worktop after cooking. They dust, mop, clean bathrooms, and one bigger item a week.

We use 2500 ft on one level. Not used or cleaned often - upstairs are 2 bedroom plus bathroom and a large storage craft room.
