Hi everyone do you use your washing machine every day.

Fleurpepper Mon 04-Nov-24 18:31:53

Just the two of us, 1 dog, 1 cat- so no, not every day. Whites once a week, and a couple of coloured washes. We do have a lot of visitors, so a lot more if we have company, lots of bedding and towels.

Really try to cut down on plastic use, so have gone back to using washing powder, sold in large cardboard boxes, for whites- and use refills for black/dark washes. Have had the same bottle for dark wash liquid and same for a very long time for conditioner (bought in concentrated refill pouches)

2 adults, one coloured one white wash a week, timed to run at 1am when the cheap electricity starts. DH still wears white shirts every day even though he retired years ago hence the white wash

Just the two of us, so probably only once or twice a week but it's always a full load and mostly I use the cold-water wash programme. Towels and underwear get a hot wash.

Like Miss Adventure I can't turn off the water in my house. Last time the plumber came he showed me how to open the flap in the street and turn it off there. I could never do that myself but at least someone could in an emergency.

Even without a Washing Machine I would still need clean clothes! I handwashed as a child/teenager thank goodness for a washing machine! Drying clothes in a damp stone cottage no fun in the winter !

Well, I've put towels on a hot wash today, sorry.
Need to get rid of cold germs.

My towels and bedding are on for the same reason.

Does this cold and cough ever go?

So we can joke about it, but it doesn’t alter the fact that our thoughtless and selfish behaviour now will affect the lives of our grandchildren and future generations.

Are older people really so complacent?

You don’t know what ‘older people’ do in the rest of their lives. Maybe we walk everywhere, are vegan and grow all our own food, never go on planes, have heat pumps. Do you do all these things?

Quite Sue Being judgemental about ‘old’ people, without any explanation is just plain rude in my book. Gave up going down to the river to wash because I thought it might upset the wildlife. I also gave up lining the cave floor with ferns because I thought they needed freedom to spread and grow without being interfered with by humans

I have a mixed wash on today, on delicate which is a good efficient energy-saving wash. 1 hour and 9 minutes. I will take my 2 french terry tops out and then give the rest an extra spin, at 1600 rpm.

Its definitely chicken-time when hoping to dry washing outside but a bit of luck it may only need to air inside, on racks

I am glad I got rid of my flannel bedding, my real linen is light and dries quickly, itdoes not need a hot intensive wash. It does fine on delicate with the extra spin

MissAdventure Mon 21-Oct-24 09:48:26

I'd still do the exact same amount.
Boys bed once a week, mine on high days and holidays, his clothes daily when he's been out working, clean for college, washed after playing football, and clean when he's going out.
m
Mine as little as I can get away with.

Mollygo Mon 21-Oct-24 09:34:02

Good post on p1 M0nica.
There are reasons for doing more washing, mentioned on this thread, but I wonder what we’d do if we still had to wash by hand as I did when my children were young?
Except during the bed wetting phase, washing clothes was a once a week occurrence and a nightmare in winter.

Not much concern about global warning amongst Gransnetters sad
Or pollution of seas!

I refer you to my post on p1 of this thread.

As much as we don’t want to think about water running out is going to happen without some serious thinking.

www.theguardian.com/environment/2024/apr/01/why-uk-facing-water-shortages-despite-record-rainfall-explainer

It's clean water that is at risk. That's a whole other debate!

I'm certainly not taking my washing down to the river and beating it with birch twigs, the water is too polluted.

Casdon Sat 19-Oct-24 11:51:06

Agreed petra, but it’s not because we don’t have enough water falling from the sky, it’s because we don’t have the infrastructure to harvest and utilise it efficiently over the country.

HelterSkelter1

I think it will Casdon with the future forecast of the Med area becoming more like Africa and S England more like the Med. Hose pipes bans more frequent and longer lasting. More people migrating from the Med to the UK because of longer periods of high temperatures which will increase water consumption here.

Warm dry summers and much wetter winters for the UK will be the norm according to the Met Office. I expect Wales and Scotland will be pumping more of our excess to the rest of the UK. We’re also surrounded by water, so in all honesty we aren’t going to run out. I’m not making light of climate change, and I take your point on detergents though.
