If you are counting! Thankfully we have had a decent amount of light these past few weeks.

Longer days after the 21st? ie more light. I can always tell the difference between Christmas and New year.

Is something particular happening on 21 December?

It's the Winter Solstice.

But the days don’t start getting longer until after Christmas!

Yes!

But I think the OP is counting the days until it starts to get lighter again.

Unless she/he is planning a Winter Solstice party.

You could organise one on GN, jasper16 - to celebrate the end of darkness and the beginning of the return to the light 🌚🌝

I feel depressed just thinking about dark night and Christmas. I think I need to head to the drs for something for this SAD. My ex died 30th September and I still can’t shake off this unfathomable grief.

Dark nights are difficult, I'm sorry.

People who get pressured and overspend at Christmas, are often people who are bad managers anyway

Not really, they can be people who are in all sorts of mess and believe that they can make it alright by spending.

Any ordinary person should be capable of ignoring pressures to spend too much at Christmas, especially when all it is is advertising. I think rather thanpouring sympathy aand help on people when they fail in smaller things, we sshould instead be encouraging them to stand up and cope with problem life brings, like not over spending at Christmas and ignoring advertising.

We too have wish lists MOnica for birthdays as well, my Mum and Dad started the idea. This year so far requests range from bubble bath to pyjamas and lots in between.

My body still hasn't adjusted to the changing of the clocks. Getting up at what to me, seems the normal time but is now an hour before everyone else.
After Dec 21st, the days will start to lengthen again, but the weather will get colder.

Why not continue living to your usual timetable when the clocks change? If you usually get up at 7.00,, just get up at 6.00 anf if you go to bed at 10.30, go to bed at 9.30.

We go to France a lot, one hour ahead of us. I never change my watch and still live to, more or less, my English time timetable.

Best to visit Caribbean for a few months. Lifts the spirit

Amazing, Thanks for sharing. I would never have thought of this.

Used to love dark nights and winter but not so much nowadays. Dread having to drive in fog or ice and have become quite nervous about living alone in a quite isolated spot.

People do go into debt at Christmas.

It has become over-commercialised but there is still enjoyment to be found in simpler pleasures.

jasper16 Thu 31-Oct-24 09:19:47

I think you will find it is very common for people to feel pressure to over spend at Christmas. There are all sorts of factors at play.

Oh dear! I'm afraid I dislike Christmas which I know sounds awful but there's so much spending when people can't afford it but try. I visit a shop and lo! Christmas hits me in the face. I feel pushed into buying gifts that probably people don't really want. HOWEVER, I do enjoy the singing and Christmas get togethers so it isn't all bad - and the weather is currently quite good - we have sunshine! Yes the Autumn is lovely at the moment

Why on earth should you feel you are being pushed into buying gifts that nobody wants - and how do you know that people are spending money they cannot afford.

Over my lifetome we have had Christmases when we were comfortable and christmases when money was very tight. Like most people we cut our coat to meet our cloth. Of course some people will over spend but the finacially reckless and spend thrifts exist all year round, not just at Christmas.

We have a simple way of not giving things that are not wanted, As a family around this time of year we circulate wish lists, a list of things we would appreciate if given. there is no guarantee you will get anything on the list - you certainly won't get everything and you do not know what you will get until Christmas day, but it means that everything received is just what the person wanted.

The curtain thing I do for various reasons:

I have dust allergies which means I have to vac often and keep soft furnishings to a minimum. I wash the curtains twice a year in summer and winter to keep the dust down.

My lounge is north facing and only gets minimal daylight, only direct sunlight briefly in mid-summer so I prefer lighter curtains in summer, and heavier ones to keep the heat in in winter.

Makes sense to me!

We have had a lovely Autumn so far- maybe we are being lulled into a sense of false security but I am feeling more upbeat than I thought I would be by this time.
We have some cooler but sunnier days forecast so winter hadn't arrived yet, thankfully.
I am now almost winter ready; my heavier curtains will be up later and my winter duvet is aired and ready, but let's hope it will be a while before I really need it.
Anyone else finding the clock change means you're waking up earlier? The last two morning I've been awake at five o clock and exhausted by eight in the evening!

When we used to go to stay with my parents, my Mum used to ask us to change the curtains from summer to winter and vice versa!

Mine are just the same all year round.

winterwhite Wed 30-Oct-24 20:31:22

Goodness keepingquiet heavier curtains! We have never had these though my parents did. Ours are light to medium weight and lined and are curtains for all seasons.

I dislike all the faux seasonal handwringing. Then it goes back to normal.
