I saw this in Facebook and thought it might strike a chord.
I read this recently...
Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years.
No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as:
Knowing when to come in out of the rain; why the early bird gets the worm; life isn't always fair; and maybe it was my fault. Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge).
His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.
Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children. It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or an aspirin to a student, but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.
Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses, and criminals received better treatment than their victims. Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home, and the burglar could sue you for assault.
Common Sense finally gave up the will to live after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled some in her lap and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.
Common Sense was preceded in death, by his parents, Truth and Trust; his wife, Discretion; his daughter, Responsibility; and his son, Reason. He is survived by his 4 step brothers; I Know My Rights, I Want It Now, Someone Else Is To Blame, and I'm A Victim.
Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone. If you still remember him, pass this on. If not, join the majority and do nothing."

It was the hard Left that killed common sense! Now watch them all come on here to deny it!
Thanks Aveline. CS has another surviving step-sibling I'm Offended

I liked it. Thanks, Aveline!
I liked it too Aveline.
Not seen this before - so clever Thanks Aveline
I have a sense that ‘woke’ has gone back to ‘sleep’ here because it spent too long jumping around and annoying people. Hence the rise of the other sleepy extreme, equally unsavoury.
I do think, and this I mean seriously, is that many people now do not take responsibility for matters which could improve their situations and relationships but moan and play the victim. My father (a product of WW1 & a POW WW2) was the first to stand up for himself and his family in the face of any bullying. I still miss his unwavering courage and strength. Nowadays he would be vilified as 'unwoke'.
I first read it when it was up on the wall of a chip shop in deepest Gippsland, several years ago. Pretty cool those Gippy folks.
The problem with common sense is that it is not very common
"Whole generations of children were subjected to being graded as grammar school, technical school or secondary modern material based on some rather dubious intelligence tests and a one-off examination taken at age 10 or 11."
This is a good example. I passed the IQ test at 11 with what the headmaster described to my parents as "flying colours" having previously told them I would be unlikely to pass based on my work record at school. For 6 years I wasted a grammar school place some hard working young person could have benefited from, as well as getting on the nerves of my teachers. You see, while intelligent in the IQ sense, I had no interest in traditional academic learning, which is why I'd never done much work at primary school. I was more into practical skills. Had I gone to a secondary modern or technical college I'd have probably walked into a trade and been earning a lot more than the clerical jobs I usually found myself in.
If the 11 plus in those days was more like the older one where you actually had to write essays about history and stuff, I'd have been correctly streamed.
How did I miss this before? Thanks Aveline! Love it. I will definitely pass it on
So very very true and so sad. His/her/their passing is a loss for the world! Sorry if I offended anyone using the wrong pronouns!!,
Brilliant. I am going to save and post this. If only we were less tolerant and fought harder for our the principles our parent taught us.

IMO common sense has always been a rarity throughout history and is no rarer now than it ever has been.
To give some totally random examples of past stupidity:-
Clothing for women, during the latter part of the 19th century women wore tight corsets that were so tight that they frequently fainted and their internal organs became deformed.
Homosexuality, even between consenting adults, was against the law for many years and homosexuals were victimised and blackmailed.

There are, of course, many other examples.
Some women tight laced. Every other wore corsets for bust support and to adopt whatever shape was in the current fashion. Along with padding and bustles etc. Much like women do today.
Absolutely spot on!
There's a saying here in Spain - common sense is the least common of the senses. I often quote it to myself.
How true! Thanks Aveline!
The problem is a shortage of uncommon sense in our political class.
Indigo - well said , I especially liked the 11 plus one!! Having ' failed ' that ridiculous and dreadful assessment and sent to a secondary modern school ( which I left aged 15!) I gained a first class degree from a good university!!?

I mourn the loss of common sense. If it was still around maybe there wouldn't be 72 different genders. Police wouldn't be on a charge for doing their jobs.
People wouldn't be afraid to speak out for fear of being misunderstood.
Dogs and cats wouldn't be bred to be fierce.
The demise of common sense is a great loss.
