Anyone remember Dave Allen? I have just been watching some of his skits on British Comedy Greats on Facebook - he was so very good.

Many happy memories of watching Dave Allen with my dad and his brother who was a priest. We would be just laughing and laughing. He was a genuinely funny, warm man, no swearing -well, hardly any - or crudeness.

I saw both Dave Allen and Spike Milligan on stage. Dave Allen made me laugh so much I curled up and banged my head on the seat in front. Spike Milligan came through the fire curtain after his show, sat on the edge of the stage and carried on for another hour. He was on a roll and didn't stop. They nearly had to carry him off!

We all loved Dave Allen in our family. There is a really good documentary about him, really interesting about where he grew up etc, try and find it. it's really worth a watch .

I found this one, and was surprised that there were things of which I’ve no recollection! I don’t remember the show with the stunts, or the Alan Bennet play.

There is also one you have to pay for, but that’s for another day!

Love loved him and his weeshort pinkie finger! Brilliant comedian made fun of everyone...This humour would no doubt offend someone now!

It was his index finger!
I always wished he would get his hair cut, as there was too much of it. He was very funny indeed, but, as others have said, probably couldn’t get away with it today.

Many years ago I went to a club in Manchester to see hiim. It was a very different and adult show. He was still very funny.

Dave Allen was indeed a comedy genius. Repeated stories of him over the years have also reinforced that he was a real gent, not overly affected by fame as so many are.

Seldom laugh at comedians nowadays. Agree DA was brilliant.

I loved watching Dave Allen. Happy memories.

When my Mother and Grandmother got together watching TV it was always - "That awful man" or "That lovely man" ha ha. Val Doonican met their standards (I loved him too).

gentleshores Tue 29-Oct-24 20:50:31

I remember him being on TV as a child :-) My Mother was very negative about him though saying he was a terrible drunk. Both she and my Grandmother strongly disapproved of Bob Monkhouse though. Partly because he'd had an affair apparently and partly because he wasn't funny!

Another little snippet for fans on here .....
The glass he had next to him wasn't filled with whisky at all. It looked like it because it was in a whisky glass, but it was actually real quality champagne. The whisky was for his image! He used to hand out bottles of champagne to my husband and crew after performances. 🍾 🍾

Oh yes, my all-time favourite comedian. Absolutely brilliant and incredibly tuned in to the way people are, and so true and funny. Still miss his shows.

Handsome and witty - I often wondered how he lost one tiger - I could read it up online, I suppose.

Anyone can lose a Tiger , mate, easy done if you leave the garden gate open........ 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Am i the ninetieth person to have said this.........?

Funny, cool & very Irish. He was of his time (the whisky , cigarette, cars, digs at religion) don't think he would even be called handsome today, he didn't have a beard or even a goatee. or a "ripped" body.

Cath9 Tue 29-Oct-24 13:28:15

I went to hear him tell his jokes at one of our local theatres

Foxyferret Tue 29-Oct-24 13:21:10

I loved him, so funny. Before my dad died in 2014, he would get out his Dave Allen videos and have us all laughing.

HeavenLeigh Tue 29-Oct-24 13:11:13

Loved him back in the day

Davida1968 Tue 29-Oct-24 12:51:14

Like others here, DH & I absolutely loved Dave Allen. My mum also was a great fan.
Terrific raconteur and IMO his humour stands the test of time. I wish there was a re-run of his shows.

Athrawes Tue 29-Oct-24 12:26:12

He was brilliant. My parents loved his programmes too. I don't find comics today half as comical - some are just crude

Loved Dave Allen. We saw him once at Sandown race course and I was surprised how short he was, I’d always imagined him to be very tall, don’t know why. May your god go with you is especially pertinent now with all the religious conflicts around the world. A bit like Lennon’s Imagine.
