To my Gdcs (aged 4-9) it’s just a really fun night of dressing up and going out after dark to collect sweets. Where they live a lot of houses participate/decorate, and a whole troop of children go around together - usually accompanied at least by dd, dressed as a witch with a green face! SIL stays at home, in a skeleton suit, to dish out sweets to callers.

i do not think it is real to young children. Many fairy tales, and some other children's stories are quite gruesome and I do not really think, even quite small children take these things seriously.

Some of the older kids did look a bit gruesome last night! Most of the little ones were witches or wizards though.

Am I being over-sensitive? The costumes I’ve seen around my neighbourhood tonight are totally inappropriate for young children, I feel. Blood and gore, knives, cleavers etc and lots of really scary stuff. Fun for teenagers and adults maybe, but not for younger children. Or am I out of touch? It just seems wrong to expose such young children to the more extreme end of this Halloween dressing up festivity. I’m glad my 6 year old granddaughter wasn’t around.
