Tattoos all over

Recently seen a few women shop assistants over 50 with tattoos all over their visible skin, hand, neck and stopping only at their faces. Men too of course. One lady had spiders and webs as her art form. I know people will say its their choice but it turns my stomach. I’ve really tried but it’s as if I have a phobia so I don't shop there..

A couple of my grandchildren and one of my daughters have Tatts. They are small tasteful ones and look ok. My daughter is an artist ,very unconventional and hers is under an arm so you can’t actually see it usually. I really don’t know why she bothered.Guess we are all different. My granddaughter has the names of her 3 children on her arms. I asked her if she thought she might forget them.

I’m not a fan of them on faces or skulls, but then I don’t like garish make up or jewellery. My son has a sleeve on one arm, my daughter a discreet Sanskrit saying on her upper arm.
They don’t put me off interacting with people though.

You sound just like my sister in law and husband. They hated tattoos for years and said they looked “common”.

As soon as their girls were old enough they got tattoos which their parents were not happy about but tried to justify it by calling them “small and tasteful”.

The girls then had their arms, legs, backs covered in very bright garish tattoos like Amy Winehouse. Cherries, sailors, hearts, birds, busty girls, cats etc. they look truly awful and very old fashioned now. The parents still hate them but try to be “cool” by asking “Have you seen X’s latest tatt?”

I think they are addictive for some. They also sometimes close off certain employment here. Where my daughter works ( not the one with tattoos) they have to cover them up ! A posh private school, presumably they don’t want the pupils to be ‘corrupted’. You gotta laugh..

Tattoos are only awful on other people.

On us and our offspring, they're "discreet, quite pretty" and artistic. smile

Allsorts just a thought, could the spider and web have been Halloween Face art, and not tattoos.

Lots of our local shops have embraced Halloween season, including decorations, fancy dress and face painting

Two of mine have tattooes, discreet and unseen by the general public 😀

What I really don't like is the earlobe expansion.

You can look through the hole and see what's going on behind the person's back. 😱

*Mollygo*, no-one is saying that! People are perfectly entitled to like or not like tattoos, just as others are perfectly entitled to get as many tattoos as they wish. What people are saying is that it's wrong to judge a person's character by the fact that they have tattoos.

It’s wrong to judge a person or their character by tattoos, how they dress, their haircut, their make up, how they talk, what they say, how many houses they have, where they go on holiday, etc. etc but they are judged by all or any of those things.
You have the right to have tattoos, but if an employer prefers not to employ someone because they don’t like the look of them, or they think it will deter customers then do they have no rights?

The would be employee made their choice.
The employer makes theirs.

Aveline Sun 03-Nov-24 11:28:57

You can't tell a person how they should feel. If people just don't like and are put off by other people's tattoos that's their opinion which they are entitled to. That's a risk that people who have tattoos knowingly take.

Aveline Sun 03-Nov-24 11:29:46

Also I'll 'judge' who I want to!

nanna8 Sun 03-Nov-24 11:43:59

What I do like are Māori tattoos, I think they are wonderful .

Witzend Sun 03-Nov-24 11:55:00

Personally I dislike all of them, if visible. And so presumably do some employers,
A young car -hire chap we dealt with in Cyprus told us he regretted the tattoos all over his forearms, because the bosses insisted that he must always wear a long sleeved shirt, including in the height of stinking hot summer.

MissAdventure Sun 03-Nov-24 11:57:11

Probably the days of having to cover them up are no longer seen as reasonable.

Primrose53 Sun 03-Nov-24 12:42:03

One of my heavily tattooed nieces is a teacher and has to have them covered all the time. Long sleeves, thick black tights or trousers in summer.

MissAdventure Sun 03-Nov-24 12:46:46

I think it's only a matter of time before someone takes their employer on, for discrimination.

^Previously I've been called a slut on GN^
That’s just awful bohemian! 😱 I hope you received an apology.

Shocking and disgusting.

Shinamae Sun 03-Nov-24 15:08:19

I’m the one in the middle 😂

As TerriBull says, it's a divisive subject and I knew it would come up again (3rd/4th time for me) but this time there are far more antis than before.

Previously I've been called a slut on GN for saying I have four fairly small self designed tattoos that each mean a lot to me. You won't have to pearl clutch as they're all hidden by clothes. I'm in my 70's and none of them are wrinkly (which is a 'hate tattoos' favourite jab) and no, I don't regret having them done.

😯

That's horrible - did you get an apology?

What I'd like to know is, how much did it hurt?

I'm too much of a coward.

Mollygo Sun 03-Nov-24 15:16:38

me too.

crazyH Sun 03-Nov-24 15:50:35

Personally, I don’t like tattoos on anyone. But both my sons have tattoos on their arms. No trouble with employment. Both are at the top of their professions.

MissAdventure Sun 03-Nov-24 16:47:25

Just so you know, all of your skin looks saggy when you get very old, not just tattooed bits.

boheminan Sun 03-Nov-24 16:48:58

Allira No apology from anyone but in retrospect I think it was a troll as I'd not seen them before the remark - or since.

How much did it hurt? An interesting question. I gritted my teeth and couldn't wait for it to be finished - ie: it hurt a lot (I'm not very brave) BUT friends who've had bigger ones than mine done, claim it didn't hurt them at all...so, maybe my pain threshold isn't too goodgrin

MissInterpreted Sun 03-Nov-24 17:20:18

You can be as judgy as you want about people with tattoos - that's your prerogative. Just as it is for others to be judgy about your judgemental attitude! grin grin grin

March Sun 03-Nov-24 17:44:29

Tattoos have never bothered me. Most people I know have them, myself included and they are apart of them.
The nicest people I've met are covered in tattoos, the most judgemental go to church every Sunday.
