Bat sheds ? We encourage them to clear off here!

Yours are a bit bigger!
I think that everyone in charge of spending OUR money should have run a small business first and been responsible for controlling expenditure.
Has the tunnel been built or was that the cost of finding out if it was necessary?

That’s interesting thanks Allira. I have to say I have never been in favour of HS2.

It’s not certain that the bats will be affected by the sound of the trains. It’s the noise only that could be the problem. However it doesn’t seem to affect bats elsewhere. So seems a waste of money.

There could be 18 trains an hour on that line.

Perhaps other parts of the line don't go through woodland where a protected species of bats lives.

I wouldn't know fancythat I just know what my partner told me when he worked as a Quantity Surveyor on HS2 jobs.

MrJ isn't surprised at this. He used to be a Quantity Surveyor, and worked on some projects for HS2. Astronomical costs for protecting wildlife like Newts. Ran into the millions!

The general public have no real idea of the money being spent on these kind of projects

Is there a website please, where figures can be looked at?

fancythat Sat 09-Nov-24 16:08:50

fancythat Sat 09-Nov-24 16:08:19

It looks like not too many people are bothered bu £100 million bat sheds.

Well I dont then think those people can then complain about costs of road building or construction projects.

Nor about the NHS etc.

The Uk people cannot expect to have it all.

fancythat Sat 09-Nov-24 15:06:24

I have tried to goo gle how much money HS2 has had to spend on protecting wildlife.
I cant find any figures. Though I can be a bit hopeless at finding stuff like this.

Might explain part of why HS2 is costing sooo much.

And presumably this sort of thing is happening across the country, albeit on a smaller scale.

EKFB is a joint venture that brings together international, market leading expertise from four leading civil engineering and construction companies: Eiffage, Kier, Ferrovial Construction and BAM Nuttall. All four partners bring specialist expertise in the design, construction, operation, financing and maintenance of railway networks, including some of Europe’s largest high speed rail projects.

Allira Sat 09-Nov-24 14:59:21

I thought it was a new shed where bats could go to shelter as their present habitat may have been disrupted by HS2 but no, it's a long structure going over the line to stop the bats being disturbed by the noise.
I do realise that bats are highly sensitive to noise but the cost seems excessive.

Even when doing household budgets, people normally get at least 3 quotes for things.

Who oversees this type of spending of public money?

I may look into this subject further.

saw the article.... Fat fingers this morning...

In the budget

"70 million to invest in new radiotherapy machines to improve cancer treatment"

Welcome though that is, one bat shed has cost more than that.

Someone was making a lot of money there, surely?

Whilst I agree it is important to preserve wildlife and save habitats, that does seem extortionate.

I agree, Allira. I couldn't believe my eyes when I say the article.

Mind you, I couldn't help wondering if the contractors were taking the p* with their pricing.

Allira Sat 09-Nov-24 13:56:28

There is a major road scheme going on not far from here and great care is being taken to preserve and create habitats for wildlife; I think this is a good thing. We can't carry on losing species at the rate we are at present.

There was also an archaeological dig which uncovered an Iron Age site and Roman remains too, which was featured on Digging for Britain.

However, the money wasted on HS2 remains controversial.

madalene Sat 09-Nov-24 13:18:17

Just think what that amount of money would do for the NHS or schools.
Ludicrous waste of our money.

When my plumber came to replace the bath a couple of years ago he found that bats had somehow got into the cavity through a hole under the eves. He showed me them on his phone. I told him to block up the hole and keep quiet about it.

I wouldn’t boast about breaking the law, on here. Bats are essential to the biodiversity of the planet.

100,000,000….million is ludicrously expensive for this project.

fancythat Sat 09-Nov-24 10:29:14

Are builders ripping off the government?

Are the government employees in such things, not getting best value for money for the puplic purse?

escaped Sat 09-Nov-24 10:12:05

I agree NannyJan53. DS is a chartered geologist working on big projects. It's ridiculous the number of times everything has to be put on hold for a species of mice or wild birds. Sometimes funding closes or is withdrawn due to the faffing.
Once the projects are completed, the wildlife returns to the spot unperturbed!
