I never ask what people want for tea. I just make something and tell them when it's ready. It's what my mum did and it still works.
Quite apart from anything else, I don't have several quick options available at any one time.
We – that is, usually, DH as he likes shopping and I don't – buys fresh meat and fish. I freeze it all and get something out each day. I add anything extra that I might need for a particular recipe to the shopping list. Maybe this is the trick: he basically knows what's available and helps choose what is bought, then I decide what I can be arsed with.
Fresh veg too but that doesn't get frozen, except for frozen peas, obvs.
If they can't choose, don't ask.
