This is a light hearted thread. Light relief from some of the more serious, but necessary themes, I hope.

My animals, mostly cats, have had rather ordinary names like George, Jenny and Jinx. My DD called one of her rabbits Romeo but her hamsters were called Brian and Keith.

Neighbours had cats called Anthony and Cleopatra and the old man down the road had a Labrador called Darnley. We also knew of a pair of Cavalier King Charles Spaniels called
Buckingham and Rockingham or Bucky and Rocky to their friends.

I met the tiniest little dog in our high street on a cold day several years ago. He was crying because he wanted to be picked up but his owner’s daughter was under instruction to make him walk as he wanted to be carried everywhere. We chatted for a while and I was tempted to stick him down the front of my coat to warm him up. He was a minute scruffy grey thing with boot button eyes and was wearing a blue jumper. On enquiring I discovered his name was Gnasher! 😂

Our dog is Merlin as I'm a witch 🧙‍♀️

Our dog is Dylan (as in Bob). My daughter’s Cocker Spaniel is Dudley and her Cockerpoo is Maverick! Many years ago my son had 2 cats, a brother & sister, called Doris & Dennis. He now has 2 Cockerpoos called Rocco & Lunar. My neighbour has a French Bulldog called Pee (🤷🏻‍♀️). Her Chocolate Lab was Trevor. In the past we’ve had cats called Dusty, Katie, Homer, Scooby. If I had another female pet she would be called Flo or Lottie - undecided about a male. 😊

At the vet's they always come out and call the pet's name. People's pets were called Maisie, Archie, Bella etc. Then came "Sweep". The owner stood up blushing, and said to the waiting owners apologetically "My children named him."

Sparklefizz that man should have talked to my husband first 🤣

We've since had two rescue dogs.

Casper who was a dream and even friends who didn't like dogs loved him. He liked nothing better than coming out on excursions with all the minded children.
He lived till he was 18 and sadly developed canine dementia.

Our current rescue is Alfie who was thoroughly spoilt by his previous older lady owner. She was going into a care home as she had dementia so that struck a chord with us.
Alfie is 13 next month and the loudest Jack Russell ever 🐕

I've had many cats in my life and these are a few of their names
Clawde
Spider...my Egyptian Mau because he looked like one
Tequila....my tiny siamese
Bumbo....was originally Columbus but is now Ted Bumbo because he's a small serial killer
Z..who, when we want to the vet's they called him Zee instead of Z until I told them he wasn't American
In addition to the aforementioned Bumbo we currently have Vincent, Hugo and Kofi and Violet the dog who thinks she's a cat

My daughter has had two new kittens for a fortnight and they still have no names. Suggestions please for unusual or clever names for a ginger boy and tortoiseshell girl.

That's how we used to pronounce his name when we were that age too (and yes, we did know how to pronounce it properly).

I once worked with someone whose cats were called Treacle & Syrup.

Allira Wed 13-Nov-24 16:26:40

Dinsdale! That reminded me of Dinsdale Landen, an actor whom I saw at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Twelfth Night, when I was a teenager. He seemed very glamorous!

We used to have a vicious gander who would sneak up behind you and savage your legs. We called him Hitler.

Bazza Wed 13-Nov-24 16:21:08

My friend had a goat called Dinsdale. It suited him.
