This is a light hearted thread. Light relief from some of the more serious, but necessary themes, I hope.

My animals, mostly cats, have had rather ordinary names like George, Jenny and Jinx. My DD called one of her rabbits Romeo but her hamsters were called Brian and Keith.

Neighbours had cats called Anthony and Cleopatra and the old man down the road had a Labrador called Darnley. We also knew of a pair of Cavalier King Charles Spaniels called
Buckingham and Rockingham or Bucky and Rocky to their friends.

My DD1 had a gorgeous Westie called Rampage. When calling him on walkies, it was fun/embarassing to have to call him! Sadly he died aged just seven and they are going to wait for their babies to grow a little before getting another dog. I wonder what their next puppy will be called.

When I was a child my parents took over a wire-haired fox terrier who had been given the name Rascal by his previous owner, so when we found a collie pup who was white, except for the one half of his head, which was black, he automatically became Rogue- the cats at the same time were Sixpence, Tuppence and Penny Fluff. My Presbyterian grandparents had brought my father up to believe it wrong to give animals names that human beings might be baptised.

My own cats have been named after Norse gods and goddesses: Freia, Thor and Sif, after that we had Trold and Storm, and now I have Tigger (he bounces) and Trubel.

A very large cat who belonged to a new neighbour started visiting us - we didn't know the cat's name so he was called 'big fella'. We later found out he was 'Worthington'. A few months later neighbour suddenly disappeared leaving his cat (and unpaid rent), and so 'big fella' became ours. Another large very fluffy cat which used to visit us and another neighbour who called him 'fluff monster' - we found out later that his name was 'tee-co' = tea cosy!

All our animals had names associated with magic. There was Magic the border collie and cats, Merlin, Harry Potter and Pru (one of the witch sisters in the Charmed Ones). Currently I have Luna and Gryffindor. Both names taken from Harry Potter novels.

Lovely names, you must have been like me and had several living with you at a time. I miss them.

I love this thread! My late DM used to walk her dog on the local common every morning and met up with lots of other dog walkers. My favourite name was Springer spaniel called Jerry.

We had a smallholding, and adopted many strays that the animal welfare caught and neutered. I used to fetch the cats when they were still slightly sedated, and stroke them on their cheeks where there are some scent glands. That motion mixed my smell with that of the cat. After spending one night in a cage, the cat was moved to live in the stables. We didn't have any horses or other livestock. We had cats named after their looks, or what their first meal was, like Sphinx, Three-toes-bashed-nose, Salami, Spaghetti. Suitcase was found discarded in a suitcase. One of our guard dogs was named Krazuka, the Xhosa word for "bite", but we also had dogs named Angus, Nika, Gaby, Susky, Lulu, Tessa, Nutcase and Oubaas (old boss).

Not mine, but my sister out on her dog walks has met a 3-legged dog called Pod, which is apparently short for Tripod!

I used to know the owner of two beautiful golden Labradors whom she named Callard and Bowser. Does anybody here remember those lovely pieces of butterscotch or what happened to this manufacturer?

AshleysGran Wed 13-Nov-24 12:49:20

Big fail here: my first cat was black, and I called it....Blackie. Now the cat I have is the first fluffy one I've had, and I call it...(go on, guess!)
