This is a light hearted thread. Light relief from some of the more serious, but necessary themes, I hope.

My animals, mostly cats, have had rather ordinary names like George, Jenny and Jinx. My DD called one of her rabbits Romeo but her hamsters were called Brian and Keith.

Neighbours had cats called Anthony and Cleopatra and the old man down the road had a Labrador called Darnley. We also knew of a pair of Cavalier King Charles Spaniels called
Buckingham and Rockingham or Bucky and Rocky to their friends.

I knew of a pair of beagles call Ronnie and Sue (Barker).

We used to have a Yorkshire terrier (terror) called JD. Nothing to do with alcohol, as we couldn’t agree on a name JD was short for Just Dog.

Stray who adopted me was named Wee Pete. Don't know where the wee part came from he was huge.

Our departed cats were Whisky, Brandy and Champagne!

Our current dogs are Betty, Archie and Dougie, all mini sausages and Poppy our spaniel.

We must have had hundreds of hamsters all called Hammy, except for two which our three youngest called after their old brother and sister, Alex and Gemma, which was most odd!

Cannot remember our three guinea pigs names, I think the multi coloured one was Apatchi. The children never forgave me as they claim I murdered them as they were outside in a big two storey hutch together and all died within three weeks of each other, just after they reached a year! Given I became the only one who fed, watered and cleaned them out it was apparently me!

Funny how things change, my father had a working sheepdog called Sweep.

I know someone who called their (not pet) chickens, Supreme, Stewart and Korma.

The male was called Au Vin.

Sparklefizz Tue 12-Nov-24 11:34:26

V3ra My husband flatly refused their request to name the other one Sweep, he said it was bad enough having poodles in the first place and he wasn't calling those names out in public!

At the vet's they always come out and call the pet's name. People's pets were called Maisie, Archie, Bella etc. Then came "Sweep". The owner stood up blushing, and said to the waiting owners apologetically "My children named him."

A friend had 2 kittens they called Rodney and Del Boy.

Elegran Tue 12-Nov-24 11:04:11

Someone once told me of someone else they knew whose two brown china mantelpiece dogs (waly dugs) were called shit and treacle.

If you had a third one, it could be called Paxo! 🐔

We had a guinea pig called Hercules when my boys were young. And just up the road was a rough looking, but very friendly dog called Fred which really suited him.
My brother had a pretty dog called Rosemary, but it got shortened to Rosie after a while.

TheWeirdo Tue 12-Nov-24 10:02:39

How beautiful!

Over many years and at different stages I've had cats, coldwater fish, budgies, canaries, mice, rats, hamsters, with names like Ebony and Erica, Euka and Nuba, Fatso, Colin, Duncan, Bjorn, Nosey, Nosher, Jaws, Fangs, Little Fatty, Little Nibbler, Plop, Wibbly, Wobbly, Sid, Spud, and a few others!

Years ago living in London we had a neighbour who called her dog 'Eeear'; she fed him titbits a great deal, and announcing that word made him rush to see what he was getting.

Indigo8 Tue 12-Nov-24 09:36:02

I knew a cat called Lucifer, someone started calling him Glue Sniffer and it kind of stuck.

I had a big, beautiful ginger cat called Topaz and my friend's little girl thought he was called Toe Pads.

Cabowich Tue 12-Nov-24 09:22:13

My cat's names at present are Fleur and Merlin, so not too unusual. When a child we called our first two cats Fluffy and Furry, for goodness sake!

I have a desire to call my next cat 'Antichrist'. My son says I mustn't in case I upset the neighbours shouting the name down the street grin.

Elless Tue 12-Nov-24 09:21:21

My son's cat is called Norman (after Norman Bates 😲)

When we adopted our dog she was called Secret - which we changed .

NotSpaghetti Tue 12-Nov-24 09:14:46

Sister Cats: Minna and Nimue

Sorry posted too soon.

ginny Tue 12-Nov-24 08:44:57

A friend had a cat called Then. As a kitten she would only come to you if you said ‘come here then ‘. If you left the then off she ignored you.

Other friends had a ‘Dulux ‘dog called Bonus.
He was the last of a litter and was born

kittylester Tue 12-Nov-24 07:16:15

We had a cat called Kiwi because he was an All Black.

My GC’s dog is named Kevin.
I met the sweetest pug at the vets named Mabel.
My Aunt adopted a stray cat who they named Buzz because when he started hanging around they used to tell him to buzz off.
When he didn’t they took him in and the name stuck.
