Has anyone ever....

I actually spotted, and entered, a rare slogan competition last month. The prize was £5000 of Aldi vouchers. Composing a rhyme about why I love Aldi brought back memories, but sadly I didn’t win.

It used to be so exciting when a long white envelope dropped on the mat telling you you’d won a prize.

As people upthread said, it was "easier" when it was slogans.
Most of our wins were from slogans.
The bed was sold and paid for our move to America.
I still have some of our prizes...

Garden tools - including a strimmer (which was novel then and lasted for years).
High street vouchers.

When my children were just the right age to appreciate Pantomime I won tickets to the London Palladium to see Jack and the Beanstalk with Frankie Howerd and Dora Bryan.
It was marvellous. Train tickets were included in the prize, so it was a great day out.
Apart from that, I won £5 for a poem which was published in
Woman magazine.

In 1965 I won a competition in a local paper to sit with a small group of people behind The Beatles whilst they were recording a TV programme.

In my pony mad youth I won ten shillings from Riding magazine in a poetry competition.
The now defunct She magazine sent me a pair of naff silver plated champagne goblets for a crossword clue I suggested.
My last claim to fame was a fiver for a crossword in an obscure shipping industry newspaper.

I used to win things when I was a teenager at the village fete for example. Also at school, we used to have occasional raffles and "guess the sweets" sort of thing. It was almost guaranteed I'd win something but they were only ever small prizes like boxes of chocolates. I think I used up all my winning luck in those early years. I did win £10 on the first ever National Lottery draw back in the 90's and in 2015 I won £25 on the Premium Bonds though!

Yes I have won quite a few competitions, not recently though.
When DD was about eighteen I won a pair of tickets for a pop festival in a newspaper competition. She had been trying to get tickets and was unsuccessful so when I gave them to her she was delighted.
Over the years I have won paint and decorating equipment.
Rose bushes.
Perfume and bath products.
Cinema tickets.
Several prizes from Gransnet when they used to do competitions, £300 in shopping vouchers. I also won theatre tickets for the Very Hungry caterpillar, dolls and children's books. I also received a lot of books which I reviewed.
I think one of the best prizes was when we were first married and poor as church mice, I won a meal out for two in a hotel.

Many years ago the son of a friend won $100,000 (Canadian dollars). He brought a house with the money. Set him up for life. The most I have ever won is £250 and that was on a ticket I'd bought for my adult son. He was delighted, never having won anything before.

I won a camera when I was about 18. as a young Mum I won a PVC shopping bag. About 20 years ago I won a beautiful gold chain with a gold pendant with 3 diamonds in it. It was from a very posh jewellers and worth about £1000. Last year I won a copy of a new book and £5 for a magazine letter.

Maggienaybe the car we won was a mini clubman convertible we traded it in after 2 years for a brand new Ford focus that we still have.
Would have loved the Concord flight.

I won a box of fireworks at school when I was 10 years old! It was priced at 5/- and contained all sorts of different fireworks - me and my classmates took them all out and gleefully inspected each one during playtime, even the loose powder in the bottom of the box!

I don't win things, I have friends who win every raffle etc. its not a skill its chance.

Yes, that’s usually the case now, but back in the day with lots of slogan and skill competitions, it was very different. I’ve won holidays with no expense spared, trips to the football World Cup and rugby World Cup, a Concord flight, lots of electrical goods, toys, vouchers. The first time I tried a slogan competition I won the £100 runners up prize. It was on a Polycell paste packet - we were newlyweds just doing up our first house. The first prize was to have your mortgage paid off and that’s when I was hooked!

Never a car though, Monk08. But on the Concord flight I met a man who’d won four.

Not me winning - one of my daughters. Many years ago, (about 20). She telephoned me, not really believing that she had won a car. It was a small electric car (back then virtually an unknown quantity). She was told that it could only be delivered within the M25 (where I lived), and had a range of about fifty miles.

She was certain it was some sort of hoax and that when it was delivered it would turn out to be a dinky toy car, but asked if she could have it put into my garage. I said Yes, and waited in on the day of delivery and -.......lo and behold.....it was the real article.

Funny story daughter then advertised it and a young Solicitor living a couple of boroughs from me replied being interested. He came to test drive it and on a darkish late October afternoon we went up to my garage at the rear of my garden and sat in the car. I had plugged it into the power socket on its arrival on advice of the deliverer, so knew it was fully charged.

Key turned......nothing appeared to happen, tried it twice more with same result. Then he tried the lights and they all came on - so power was going in. Then both of us almost simultaneously realised that we had been expecting normal engine noise when key, turned and these new fangled cars were totally silent.

So, after test drive, he contacted my daughter, agreed the price, and came and collected. The money really helped my daughter at a very difficult time, she sent to me a large bouquet of flowers.

I won a teddy bear once, but I can’t remember the circumstances. I was grown up. It must have been some sort of raffle. I don’t normally do competitions.

My Sister in Law did win a Camper van about 20 years ago.

I won £2,000 in 1975/6 from Good Housekeeping magazine, it was sponsored by NatWest bank and I went to London to their tower to receive it.
Nothing so heady since! Occasional win in our pub meat draw, but then I rarely enter competitions.

Many things a car, cruises, holidays, electrical goods, spa breaks, clothes, gift vouchers, garden tools and many more smaller items.

Not me but my late brother in law won loads a car a cruise and lots of gadgets. He apparently had a knack for writing slogans.

I have gone through phases of doing competitions.My wins have been an electric piano and back in the 70’s a joggy bear fitness video.More recently a family day out at a local children’s farm and a term of ballet lessons for my dancing granddaughter.

Very rarely, although I had a modest lotto prize last week! Even those dreadful raffles rarely give anything. - unless it’s the usual tatty candle or bath salts…

I once won £500 for doing a crossword. I felt very guilty, so didn't tell my husband.

In June this year won 2 Center Court Wimbledon tickets and 2 nights in a £1400 a night London hotel, courtesy of Waitrose.
I’ve won 2 music related competitions too.

Never won anything I can think of and when it comes to a raffle if there were ten prizes and only four people in the room I d still watch them take the prizes
