Absolutely not true that the tubes and stations are dirty!
I travel at least once a week on the tubes and buses into central London and honestly I feel as safe as I do in any other city!
Today I went to the Van Gogh exhibition at the National Gallery, had a coffee in the lovely cafe there and though how privileged I was to be able to do so. I make full use of my freedom pass!!

I hope you enjoyed your visit. I was at the National Gallery today as well. It was busy wasn't it? Full of people enjoying themselves. No-one seemed scared of being in the city.

Thanks MissA. Good to have some facts in the mix. It appears then that my nearest city of Manchester is more crime ridden than the capital city. I suppose what would also have bearing on these figures would be whether or not some crimes are no longer reported upon as the police don’t appear to have the manpower nor resources to deal with all of it These days.

Now area of Debenhams just smells like a urinal.

Manchester was once referred to as Gunchester for a very good reason.

Stats don't always prove anything much. They depend on the people recording them. Crime is often not recorded. Then there's this "non-crime crime". WTAF? People who shop lift are not always challenged let alone arrested and recorded these days. People are not always bothering to report crime against them because they know nothing will come of it. There seems to be little anyone can do about it and the criminals know it. 🤷‍♀️

I have to agree M61 I haven’t been to Piccadilly Gardens for ooh must be 30 years. Photographs in the Manchester Ecening News put me off and I hear it’s only gotten worse over time. An area to avoid.

London's population now stands at over 9,700,000 as one of the most densely populated areas in the UK with a myriad of gang turf war having carved up certain areas as theirs, often abutting rival spaces. Drug trafficing having grown exponentially between many different cultural factions it's hardly surprising that London has a higher rate of homicide than other places in the UK.

To put the record straight, I don't think anyone said Boris' performance as Mayor was exemplary or praiseworthy. He certainly had quite a few disasters. What was said about him referred to the mood in London at the time, and for me this was down to Boris' charisma, his sense of humour and his energy. He greatly supported the Arts and Music. He supported affordable housing. Didn't he bring about the cycle hire scheme which was an enormous success? He made the streets of London far cleaner than they are now. He was an engaging communicator at County Hall, although chaotic in thought. Unfortunately a lot of these things didn't always result in great achievements, but Sadiq Khan is hardly improving London and instilling great confidence in all its inhabitants, or in outsiders' perceptions either.

I am 75 and have lived in London since I was 18. I love it and could never live anywhere else. I don’t find it frightening apart from the parts of the city which all cities have - but once you know them you avoid them. Also I think Sadiq Khan is an excellent mayor. I have voted for him at every mayoral election as have all my friends. Boris Johnson was, as ever, a nightmare.

I don't think Boris lived in the Mansion House. He was Mayor, not Lord Mayor.
However, I've said before, (and been laughed at by those who lived 100+ miles away from the capital) that the mood that was better when Boris was mayor. You are right there Sago.
