London seems to be a right cesspit.

An eight year old girl has just been shot this morning.

Machetes, drugs, pickpockets, snatching of mobile phones out of people’s hands, gangs.

And before we say “well look at Barcelona/Paris” two wrongs do not make this right. Crime (not NCHI) needs to be clamped down upon surely? Hard.

Is it as bad as the headlines we read?

Every huge estate is a breeding ground for violence. Almost all violence has its root cause as drug related . Drugs are the currency .all these estates sit cheek by jowl with affluent areas . It’s how it is. It’s how it always was to much lesser degree . Now we have immigration and deprivation and the Internet .social media and mobiles are how they conduct their business. Imagine going into a phone box and calling a house phone to do your deal or make your threats . Snap chat messages disappear .

Thanks MissA. Good to have some facts in the mix. It appears then that my nearest city of Manchester is more crime ridden than the capital city. I suppose what would also have bearing on these figures would be whether or not some crimes are no longer reported upon as the police don’t appear to have the manpower nor resources to deal with all of it These days.

Mind you there’s this of course to add into the mix:

People also ask
What area of the UK has the most murders?
London
In 2023/24, London had the highest homicide rate of any region of the United Kingdom, at 13.1 homicides per million people, followed by Northern Ireland at 12.6 homicides per million people.26 Aug 2024

^I hate to say it but Boris was a good Lord Mayor^.
I don't think Boris lived in the Mansion House. He was Mayor, not Lord Mayor.
However, I've said before, (and been laughed at by those who lived 100+ miles away from the capital) that the mood that was better when Boris was mayor. You are right there Sago.

What dates was BJ mayor of London?

escaped Tue 26-Nov-24 17:21:09

I'd have to check exactly, but the year of the economic crisis 2007(?) - for about 7 years. I remember because we had just returned from abroad and London, our hometown, was a pleasant surprise to return to.

Nice to see Glasgow way down the bottom of the list 😊

I am 75 and have lived in London since I was 18. I love it and could never live anywhere else. I don’t find it frightening apart from the parts of the city which all cities have - but once you know them you avoid them. Also I think Sadiq Khan is an excellent mayor. I have voted for him at every mayoral election as have all my friends. Boris Johnson was, as ever, a nightmare.

Boris Johnson was, as ever, a nightmare. 😂
Yes.

To put the record straight, I don't think anyone said Boris' performance as Mayor was exemplary or praiseworthy. He certainly had quite a few disasters. What was said about him referred to the mood in London at the time, and for me this was down to Boris' charisma, his sense of humour and his energy. He greatly supported the Arts and Music. He supported affordable housing. Didn't he bring about the cycle hire scheme which was an enormous success? He made the streets of London far cleaner than they are now. He was an engaging communicator at County Hall, although chaotic in thought. Unfortunately a lot of these things didn't always result in great achievements, but Sadiq Khan is hardly improving London and instilling great confidence in all its inhabitants, or in outsiders' perceptions either.

London's population now stands at over 9,700,000 as one of the most densely populated areas in the UK with a myriad of gang turf war having carved up certain areas as theirs, often abutting rival spaces. Drug trafficing having grown exponentially between many different cultural factions it's hardly surprising that London has a higher rate of homicide than other places in the UK.

MissAdventure Tue 26-Nov-24 17:49:17

I suppose it also depends on what is crime, these days?
Smoking a joint, in your own home, as opposed to doing an armed robbery.

It’s a shame, Loved Manchester back in the day, loved the department stores.
Now area of Debenhams just smells like a urinal.
Loads of homeless/ spice zombies around Piccadilly.
City is just a sea of Pri-mark bags 😩

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Tue 26-Nov-24 18:37:39

I have to agree M61 I haven’t been to Piccadilly Gardens for ooh must be 30 years. Photographs in the Manchester Ecening News put me off and I hear it’s only gotten worse over time. An area to avoid.

Stats don't always prove anything much. They depend on the people recording them. Crime is often not recorded. Then there's this "non-crime crime". WTAF? People who shop lift are not always challenged let alone arrested and recorded these days. People are not always bothering to report crime against them because they know nothing will come of it. There seems to be little anyone can do about it and the criminals know it. 🤷‍♀️

petra Tue 26-Nov-24 18:50:06

Manchester was once referred to as Gunchester for a very good reason.

Astitchintime Tue 26-Nov-24 18:55:46

We are over-nighting in London at the weekend - I rather think I would prefer to stay home................

Rosie51 Tue 26-Nov-24 19:58:34

9.7 million people will also overnight in London this weekend, as they do most nights. We're still here alive and kicking......

What is a homeless/ spice zombie please?

TerriBull Tue 26-Nov-24 20:12:15

Spice is a drug which produces a Zombie like stupor in users.

Jeanathome Tue 26-Nov-24 20:17:43

But there must be homeless people who are well ....just homeless?

I'm sure I'd be reaching for whatever numbed the pain after a night or 2 sleeping in Piccadilly Gardens.
