I have just started this book by BJ. Its such an entertaining read, his sense of humour and intelligence shines through. He was a truly inspirational PM. If he had not been knifed in the back by his own party he would have led the Tories to another landslide victory.

But maybe a good entertaining author? I think so Oreo, the book on Rome was well researched and well written.

I will look out for it. I have seen Unleashed on the library app.

I was just thinking the other day what a great joy it is to go onto websites and listen to the news and see nothing whatever about this dreadful man - what a relief - until this OP!!

Chocolatelovinggran Wed 27-Nov-24 18:37:09

...and he lied to Parliament...( I'm a stuck record, I know)
Is " entertaining " and having a " good sense if humour" an important set of criteria for a Prime Minister ?
His party - including Cabinet Members appointed by him seemed to see him as a liability at the end, rather than inspirational.

Loving it “i did not want to put up barriers against those who had been to fee paying schools, that wasnt levelling up, that was levelling down. Thats what Labour did, thats what Lefties got off on. Abolishing grammar schools, banning academic selection, taxing fee paying schools, punishing effort, punishing investment, punishing aspiration, insisting all must have prizes. That was the agenda of the left.

How true.

BlueBelle Wed 27-Nov-24 22:27:19

Well I can’t believe anyone could find BJ an inspiration and as for a partnership with the hideous Farage well off to hell in a handcart just add Trump to the mix and we are really down the rabbit hole with no return
😫

This post is surely a wind up!!

Why?

Everyone’s entitled to their opinion.

I’m going to be laid up for two weeks after an op next Monday so I think I might use up my audio book free credit for December as I’m interested to hear what he has to say for himself. I won’t tell DD or she’ll put me back in hospital. 😂

(I presume its a BJ quote and am treating It as such Bev ie not your words - I am addressing the quote

Quite offensive really to the millions of families whose children can't afford fee paying schools or either don't have access to grammar schools or disagree with their principle and make choices for state education

To say those parents and their children - like my own family - don't make efforts, don't invest time and work, dont have aspirations, is outrageous:

And as for the "insisting all must have prizes" what does he mean by that?

MaizieD Wed 27-Nov-24 23:39:04

Looking at that quote it's plain that he has nothing original to say. Those kinds of accusations have been directed at 'the left' for decades. He's just rehashing old tropes.

What a waste of space he is...

MaizieD Wed 27-Nov-24 23:51:00

P.S All Must Have Prizes' is a 20 year old book by Melanie Philips. He's writing in clichés...

Wyllow3 Wed 27-Nov-24 23:53:26

My Mum taught in a comprehensive when they started up and I recall those tropes from the 1970's.

It really is offensive for families and the teachers who cared and still do care!

encouraging effort
encouraging investment (people time matters just as money does)
encouraging aspiration

Found a summary/context, so that's where he acquired the phrase.

What an ironic thread.
Posters have been complaining on other threads about Starmer being described in less than flattering terms, and denying that any other PM has been described in an unflattering way.

As for me, I’m saying nothing about either of them.

I think he is making the point that having that choice is important, he is not criticising teachers. I couldnt afford fee paying schools for my three, but did not envy or want to take away the choice of those who could.

This thread is specifically about an autobiography and the writer is described as inspirational in the O/P inviting comment. Bit hard to discuss anything else.

Wyllow3 Thu 28-Nov-24 11:20:46

BevSec who has suggested envy motivates a critique of BJ's ideas?

rowyn Thu 28-Nov-24 11:39:01

It's noticeable that most of the Boris haters use extreme language. Could these be hate crimes?

And do you think Labour supporters could persuade Starmer to take an intelligence task, whilst R takes a lie detector?

Grantanow Thu 28-Nov-24 11:53:33

Almost the worst PM we have had. I wouldn't touch his book or anything else from him with a barge pole. Good riddance.

Wyllow3 Thu 28-Nov-24 12:29:17

If you are interested there's a shortish critique of the book in the Guardian from a month ago

www.theguardian.com/books/2024/oct/06/unleashed-by-boris-johnson-review-regrets-not-even-a-few

"Billed as offering the unfiltered truth about Brexit, Covid, partygate and more, the former prime minister’s brazen memoir is in fact little more than the latest chapter in his bid to present himself as a Churchillian hero"

Article offers some interesting fact checks on claims.

Lots of right-leaning people think us “liberal-lefties” are all just poor old peasants, fuelled with bitterness, driven by envy and jealousy! grin

Boris Johnson was and is our Donald Trump...very bad for the UK imo

Oh dear!

Starmer is just as well educated as Johnson and probably just as clever.

The salient difference is Starmer earned his education, Johnson had his paid for by Daddy.

Bit hard not to critique either the man nor the book, when it’s the entire purpose of this post?

People either admire Johnson or they don’t. I don’t but I accept many did and many still do.

Just I despise Farage and Trump, many many don’t, for a myriad of reason, very few of which I understand.
