Plus cheese on toast, spaghetti on toast etc.

I’ve started picking GC up from school ( -ages 4 to 7 ) and I have them until 6.00pm.
I just been giving them something on toast at around 4.30pm, plus a piece of fruit.
Is this ok?
Tbh I’m just too tired to do anything else.

I know, but you can't beat that almost bitter taste of crispy, blackened toast.

"Oh yes, I can't stand pale, flabby toast!"
Down with flabby toast!!

It is better for you.

They need something to eat when they come home from school .
Do their parents feed them later ?
I have to admit that I'm not a fan of beans on toast and my children wouldn't eat them either .
Mine liked tea or milk with cake (admittedly always home made ) or biscuits .
They might have wanted toast .
Then , supper a couple of hours later .
Supper would be salad based in summer and casserole based in winter .

Ooh yes, lots of black pepper, salt, plenty of butter, and well done (almost burnt) toast.
Lovely!!!

Not clear from OP whether the children have another meal later. If so, what happened to good old-fashioned tea? Decent bread butter and jam plus dark ecentcake. Or buns? Easy to get ready when children are Hungry.
If their last meal, isn’t 4.30 a bit early.
I’d call baked beans on toast a meal not a snack.

My Mum used to make a high tea (similar to what Kandinsky does) because we had a meat + two veg school dinner.

If I went to my friend's for tea we had bread and butter with jam. I remember the jam, it was black cherry - delicious!

Did they have a school dinner?
If so, it's probably fine, although school 'dinner' is a euphemism these days!

DD used to go to a friend's for tea when she was at junior school and friend came here sometimes. I always cooked a dinner but whenever DD went to her friend's house she always had beans on toast.
As far as I know her friend is fine and so is DD!

Not sure about spaghetti on toast though, carbohydrate on carbohydrate - perhaps egg instead?

I love beans on toast: fibre, protein- what's not to love?
My children wouldn't touch it ( sigh)

Beans on toast is fine for kids after school. Mine used to have a yoghurt and fruit after. Even now, DH and I have beans on toast if we’ve had a busy day. In fact so do a lot of my friends.

MissAdventure Thu 28-Nov-24 19:16:23

It is in my house. smile
Cut up a lovely tomato to go with it, and there's one of the five-a-day, too.

Well, we have just had beans on toast for supper, followed by fresh fruit. We had our main meal at lunch time.

However, what on earth are you doing collecting your DGC from school, if by the time you do it you are so tired. In that case you should tell your AC that you can no longer manage it.

David49 Thu 28-Nov-24 19:12:07

That’s exactly what we’re had 60 odd years ago with a poached egg on top, we all had school meals, fish fingers, Welsh rarebit and spaghetti rings were also on the menu. We didn’t get to choose we ate what was on offer.

dogsmother Thu 28-Nov-24 19:09:50

Sounds perfect, you could also do eggs, cheese I’d suggest they are also nutritious, simple and acceptable to young ones.

Fleurpepper Thu 28-Nov-24 19:07:33

It depends very much what they had for breakfast and lunch. If it is their main meal, I don't think it is right on a regular basis, ok from time to time of course.

My grandson would eat baked beans on toast or with fish fingers or pasta with cheese every day if he got the chance. Nothing wrong with beans/spaghetti on toast when they come home from school

AskAlice Thu 28-Nov-24 18:42:13

Protein, carbs, fibre and vitamins/minerals - sounds good to me! Do you have them every day Kandinsky? If so, I'd be pretty tired too! I have one of my GC twice a week after school and another one all day on a couple of Fridays per month when they're not at nursery, and that's enough for me.

For my after-school GC I quite often make some pasta with a sauce and grated cheese followed by a yoghurt or something like rice pudding (from a tin - he loves it!) Occasionally if we've had something the night before that he likes, for example chicken and roast veg or shepherd's pie, I'll save a portion and re-heat it, but that is the exception rather than the rule. I always try to do something hot as he has a packed lunch at school.

If his parents are happy and your GC have good appetites with a varied diet at home then they'll be getting all they need to be healthy.

Visgir1 Thu 28-Nov-24 18:32:28

That's exactly what my little Grandson had today as we were looking after him, just added couple of fish fingers. He loved it.

If the children are having a cooked lunch at school, beans on toast for tea is fine. Jacket potato (done in the microwave or air fryer) with beans and/or cheese is good, too.
