How much is your car insurance?

I'm just trying to see what the average cost is these days as ours is very expensive at £630 ish. It's in my name with 7 years no claims and OH as a named driver (another vehicle insured in his name). This year it actually went up rather than down - thought with another year's no claims it might have gone down. Is there anything cheaper than that these days, with a reputable company? It's for an average sized small family car with a 1.4 engine.

I think in my case, I hadn't had my own policy for many years and had just been named on OH policy. It meant they didn't consider any of my previous no claims but gave me a starter of 5 years - it's now 7 years and still high premiums! OH has a policy with the same company that costs half that amount - so I really don't know how they work it out but it might be a combination of not having a policy of my own for years plus age. Maybe I have to wait another 10 years to get reduced premiums lol.

My 21 plate Mini Cooper clubman £800. Full ncb, no points . I used various comparison sites. Could have saved £150 but with a company I’d never heard of so stayed with saga
I think my age a factor

Does age affect the price rather than no claims? Before we gave up the car last year we were paying about £60 a month. We are 83 and 85.

Mine is £283.64 fully comp with the AA.

I have 9 years no claims and my partner is on my policy. I said I do max 8000 miles a year (which is true), which brought the price down.

It's a very old, very little car!!

I changed this year because AXA wanted nearly double that amount and said the car was worth nothing if I wrote it off. At least the AA reckons it's worth £1500.

I found the policy on one of the online compare the market sites (can't remember which one).

I thought it was the least miles you do that brought the price down?

There's certainly something in that. When I applied for the insurance I guessed my mileage and entered 10,000. Then I checked my service records and realised I never do more than 8000 miles (last year it was quite a bit less than that), so I changed the mileage on the application, which reduced the premium by quite a bit.

Adding my partner also reduced the premium, even though he has three points (I have a clean licence). I declared his points, so it's a bit weird.

I had a 12 year old car which I changed last January for a brand new VW UP 1 ltr.
My insurance shot up from about 300 to 600 plus.
This included my daughter which did make it slightly cheaper
The age of the car makes a difference.
Dread to think what they'll be charging this time.

Ours is a VW as well - about 7 years old though. I wonder if parts costs affect the premium as well as VW parts aren't cheap. We are with one of the most highly rated Insurance Companies and I think the service you get if you have a problem counts too, but I think it sounds like we could still get a better deal with another good company.

Suzuki Swift 1 litre ecoboost about 6 years old. No claims, husband as a named driver, legal protection with LV £227.

I always search around each year using a comparison website . As suggested by Martin Lewis on his show . He also mentions a sweet spot for renewing which is about 3 weeks before the renewal date. Leaving it to the last minute pushes the premium up apparently.

Mine went over £200 for the first time this year - no claims but just because of general cost of living increases.
I’m 64 with full NCB and my car is a 1500 cc diesel Renault Clio.

Our problem is we judge companies by the service received and when we needed Aviva they were excellent. We have a two car policy including a hybrid which is more expensive to insure. It seems what you save on petrol you pay out in insurance. There’s no discount for loyalty of course so it goes up every year. Nevertheless if we can afford we’ll keep paying until Aviva lets us down at which point we’ll switch.

Change insurers every year always follow Martin Lewis advice on Moneysavingexpert. Sometimes a good amount of cashback through Quidco

Ours jumped nearly 40% this year when our renewal came through, with no claims, no accidents, no points on either licence.
Phoned and asked if it was the best they could do, they knocked it down by £10.
Did a comparison and changed insurer and saved over £300 from my original quote with original company.

Dianehillbilly1957 Mon 09-Dec-24 13:52:54

My renewal reminder came through yesterday. Has gone up £117!!!! Nothing has changed, only the car like myself will be another year older! Passed my test in 1979, no claims, clean licence, ex coach driver. Now on the shopping around treadmill yet again!

I haven't got a car. I couldn't possibly afford one. Public transport for me.

Cateq Mon 09-Dec-24 12:38:51

Most insurance companies only increase the no claims discount for the first five years and once you’ve earned the maximum discount it’s not uncommon for the premiums to increase. I have a convertible with a 2lt engine with both DH and myself on the policy and this year it was £420. I was previously with Direct Line, but changed to Admiral last year but have moved to DL, as Admiral were quoting over £600, it’s worth shopping around.

My Car Insurance is due this month. Last year I paid £550, because I had a small accident - got dazzled by the sun and went into the grass central reservation. No one else was involved. I wonder how much it will be this year!!

knspol Mon 09-Dec-24 12:03:18

Under £300 for a medium sized Volvo . Renewal quote was much higher so went on a comparison site and got the present cheaper deal with a company which is part of LV. Only 'drawback' is had to be opened online but there are numbers to ring if you need to speak to them after eg an accident. Did check that could actually get through to a person before signing with them.

cmcpne Mon 09-Dec-24 11:53:18

I usually do a comparison as there are no benefits to loyalty that I can find. I’ve used Quidco where you get casbah too and also Compare the Meerkat and got a year of 25% off all my drinks at Caffè Nero. With the price of a latte now & the number DH & I seem to get is a good discount.

You lucky lot must be quite young still, My DSiL is now paying £1800 because of her age 87!

Bluesmum Mon 09-Dec-24 11:18:34

Forgot to say brother as named driver and full ncb

Bluesmum Mon 09-Dec-24 11:17:09

I have just paid £868 for a four year old bmw 1.6, max 4000 miles per year and spends 3 months locked in garage whilst I am in Australia! Shopped around and this was the best average, apart from going with some unknown company for only a few pounds less!

Hollyhock1 Sun 08-Dec-24 16:48:49

2.0L very old Audi A4 estate. Me as main driver, on full no claims, husband as named driver, fully comp, £170 this year with Saga, down from £234 last year also with Saga. Was pleasantly surprised.

Jaxjacky Sun 08-Dec-24 14:09:28

1.6 engine, 70 plate Skoda Karoq, £286 full comp, MrJ is a named driver. I spent a good few hours online comparing prices and checking T’s and C’s.
