Anyone else a bit baffled about the Gisele Pelicot case?

Did she really have no idea that she was being drugged? Surely she had some suspicions?
Strong barbiturates have side effects don’t they?

This is a truly shocking case and extensively reported upon world wide.

I'm sorry to be blunt OP, but I don't understand why you're baffled by it? And suggesting that somehow she must have been suspicious and is somehow to blame.

Perhaps you should read the reports carefully and thoroughly before posting.

Thanks, MissInt.

Why would anyone in an otherwise loving and supportive marriage of decades ever come to the conclusion that a husband could suddenly change that much? Side effects are simply symptoms and of course she would look for a medical answer, one that doctors even failed to find. Be careful how you phrase your curiosity, women are victimised and victim blamed all too often in society.

MissInterpreted Sun 15-Dec-24 15:13:14

Phillips, not Fisher.

Baggs Sun 15-Dec-24 15:03:02

She was, essentially, tortured. And had she had a choice she would have opted out.

Fisher may have been tortured in effect (God! I pity her!) but it was her own fault.

Baggs Sun 15-Dec-24 15:00:59

In fact, Gisele Pelicot didn't do anything!

Baggs Sun 15-Dec-24 14:59:54

Or, to put it more simply: Fisher chose to do what she did; Pelicot did not.

You'll be even more baffled by the Lily Fisher story.

Lily Phillips? It's not in the least similar to the Pelicot rapes. Phillips consented to having sex with 101 men in a day. Gisele Pelicot was drugged, raped and abused for a decade.

I think you missed the point, oldfrill. Campared with the Lily Fisher story, the Gisele Pelicot is quite simple in my view.

Lily Fisher had "agency". Gisele Pelicot did not.

I was not talking about 'similarity'.

MissInterpreted Sun 15-Dec-24 14:54:22

No, the two aren't in any way comparable, but anyone who has seen even a clip about Lily Phillips can see the effect it had on her. She may have consented, but she's part of a much larger enterprise - and it does raise questions about the whole Only Fans/social media sex work thing and the knock-on effect it is having on whole generations of young people.

Indeed, Allira - none of those participating in this in any way can have any self-respect. And all for money and internet 'fame'...

Lily Phillips.

The girl needs help. She may think it was her decision but clearly that is strange behaviour.
There was a team there organising this too.

What kind of man joins in with this? They can have no self-respect either.

NotSpaghetti Sun 15-Dec-24 14:10:58

OK. I'm wrong.
Just looked this up.

She will have to "beat" Lisa Sparks then! 🙄

What a weird Guinness World Record.

NotSpaghetti Sun 15-Dec-24 14:02:47

I think since then she has been quite distraught.
I'm not sure if that's true anymore.

Oh yes! Missinterpreted - Lily Phillips - who was/is an Only Fans "girl" and adult film actress.

Pretty shocking too. And obviously not what she expected.

Well, no - but apparently she's going for 1000 next! shock
I know someone whose daughter has made a lot of money from Only Fans and bizarrely, she's always telling everyone about it and how proud she is of her. I know most say they do it through choice - but I can't say I'd want my daughter doing it (or my son, for that matter!)

I know, that's such an appalling attitude. Women are still seen as mere commodities by so many men.

HousePlantQueen Sun 15-Dec-24 13:47:57

Interesting links, thank you. The Guardian article is chilling, it seems that the accused may be a suspect in at least two previous rapes and murders.

The worst bit of the article, to me was:

Several told investigators it wasn’t rape if Gisèle’s husband had consented for her. “He can do what he likes; it’s his wife,” one said

Newatthis Sun 15-Dec-24 13:47:39

Who’s Lily Fisher? Any links?

MissAdventure Sun 15-Dec-24 12:33:22

It reads as if she spent her life in a constant fog, falling asleep, unwell, losing her hair, gynaecological problems, with no idea why, and that the doctors she consulted were just as baffled.

Yes, I admit I am baffled. Baffled (and shocked) about her husband's behaviour and that of his accomplices.

OldFrill Sun 15-Dec-24 12:24:52

She asked her husband if he was drugging her but he was so upset she could even think such a thing he was in tears.
Nothing new suspected it so it wasn't looked for. Noone can imagine the unimaginable (I think her son said that at the trial when asked if he had suspicions). The thing is... Gisele will not be the only woman subjected this and that's why she refused anonymity.

That's an excellent article. Thanks for the link.

There is a documentary telling Gisele's story on Channel 5. She has been astonishingly brave to make her case public and to watch the horrendous videos her husband took of her, despite her trauma. She is applauded by crowds of women each time she goes to court.

You don't mean Lily Phillips, do you - because that story is not for the faint hearted either!
