False Memories

It was the other way round in my family. I would cringe with embarrassment as my mother recounted some event which was either nothing like as dramatic as she made out or simply did not happen at all.

My exasperated younger brother came up with the acronym, LOOFA - load of old Fanny Adams or in his words, load of old F**king Ar***oles! πŸ˜‚

Why do people do this? My mother lived through two world wars and a revolution. Was that not interesting/exciting enough? πŸ€”

I wish she had reached for the pudding basin and scissors rather than a bottle of perm lotion. She wanted me to look like Hayley Mills but I turned out looking like Cleo Lane.

Ex-Dancer, your daughter was given a balanced diet; now she , presumably, an adult, has chosen not to eat these foods. Her choice, which she is a position to make.
Next time, if she starts on false memories like cutting her hair, simply face her down, and say repeatedly, that is not true. it never happened.

PS.... Just remembered.... When my mum was little (a long time ago, she would be 110 if still alive) she did put a basin on her older brother's head and cut his hair. With disastrous results I might add. It was a 'family story'.

To me it sounds like a healthy diet. Your daughter should be thanking you, not criticising you. smile

I have the opposite problem. I can remember all the times I lost patience with my DD. She was so stubborn when she was small. I recently told her I regretted all the times I treated her badly and she said she couldn't remember them and I wasn't such a bad mum!

My adult daughter keeps "reminding" me of all the terrible things I did to her when she was a child.
It seems the biggest, most terrible thing I did was to over feed her with certain foods as a result of which she now cannot possibly eat eggs, turkey, sprouts, casseroles/stews, and several other things which I cannot remember.
One thing I did (apparently) was to put a basin on her head and cut her hair around it (have you ever tried putting a basin on your head, let along cut hair round it!)
She trots out these stories to anyone who'll listen and they're just not true, quite frankly I'm beginning to get quite annoyed.
How can I stop her? I've tried asking quietly that she stops, I can't convince her that she's wrong (well we did perhaps eat a lot of stews - we were short of money when she was young) but I can't convince her that she's mistaken.
Help!
