Happy solstice to all

DH bought me a solar light as I get rather down in the winter. Well I have to say I think it has worked 🤞

It was a glorious dawn this morning, too - only saw it because we were up so early in order to hit M&S when they opened at 7, to get the turkey.

Sunrise Edinburgh yesterday 8.42, sunset 15.39 (but at 14.00 it was so dark I had to put on the kitchen light to fill a kettle)

Today sunrise was at the same time but sunset will be at 15.40. Hurray! www.timeanddate.com/sun/uk/edinburgh?month=12 Year's light map for Edinburgh, sunrise/sunset and day/night lengths.

For light maps for other UK places, put your own town? in place of edinburgh? in the URL. For instance, www.timeanddate.com/sun/uk/york?month=12

Happy Solstice everyone. I welcome the return of the light every year as it always lifts my spirits.

Lovely reminder paddyann. Happy Solstice to you and yours.

Ps the sun's shining here 🌞

Not sure how we've lasted 40 years as we are clearly unsuited.
😂
I'm sure we are too!

He was in a t shirt yesterday evening, I was wondering whether to pull a crochet blanket over me. "It's 21C!" he said

Hopefully this will cheer DH up. He has SAD and I dread the dark nights as he is so miserable. Not to mention all the bright daylight lights he has on which hurt my eyes.

Thank you for a bit of cheer.

Has he got a therapy light box?
A friend's son uses one and I think it helps.

He has several, hence our electricity bills are horrendous. He leaves every light in the house on just to top it up. Drives me mad. Then there is the central heating, we play a game where I turn down the thermostat everytime I pass it and he turns it up. I honestly think I am going to faint due to overheating. There goes the gas bill. Not sure how we've lasted 40 years as we are clearly unsuited.

Thanks for the suggestion, it might help others but I think my DH is a lost cause.

I look forward to longer days! We live on 54th degree latitude, so quite far north. Our sunset today will be 4:19pm, and sunrise 9:00 am. If it were sunny during the day it wouldn't seem so dreary, but it's been overcast and drizzly all week adding to the gloom.

Here's to brighter days ahead.sunshine

There’s always one 🌬️
I actually love winter and adore it when the nights draw in not so happy when they start drawing out again.
Maybe it’s because I was born in February 🤷‍♀️

Mollygo Sat 21-Dec-24 22:52:42

Thanks and happy winter solstice to all. Lighter nights will be a relief, though I’ve noticed that we’ve needed to put the lights on later already, especially if the weather has been fine and sunny. 4.15 today.

Dempie55 Sat 21-Dec-24 22:45:35

Sunset today @15:36. Sunset tomorrow @15:37. Things are looking up!

Thank you for reminding us.

Time to light the candles, drink mulled cider and bring in some greenery from the garden if it's not too wet.

Dempie55 Fri 20-Dec-24 22:28:29

Thank goodness! I always feel exhausted at this time of year, even though I no longer work now! So glad to see the light return!

merlotgran Fri 20-Dec-24 21:01:19

Thank you, paddyann. My spirits lift at the thought of lighter evenings, even if it takes until the end of January to actually notice them.

Best wishes to you and yours.

grandMattie Fri 20-Dec-24 20:52:23

Hurray! At last the days will start lengthening.

Iam64 Fri 20-Dec-24 20:46:37

Thanks paddyann, a new one for me - it’s beautiful and uplifting

Grannmarie Fri 20-Dec-24 20:37:25

Ring out, solstice bells!

Sorry I can't do links but I heard Jethro Tull on GHRadio yesterday and realised that the solstice was near.

Wishing the same to you and yours, paddyanne, it's good to know that we're moving towards the light.

Dilemma Fri 20-Dec-24 20:35:57

Winter Solstice is a novel by Rosamunde Pilcher. Highly recommended to while away the dark days.

Witzend Fri 20-Dec-24 20:34:11

It’s always marked here because it’s my brother’s birthday, so we’re off to lunch with him and SiL tomorrow. 🥂

Wyllow3 Fri 20-Dec-24 20:33:00

Thank you.
How I hate these short dark days, and we haven't had a lot of sun when it is day....

vampirequeen Fri 20-Dec-24 20:27:00

Have a happy and peaceful solstice everyone.

I have 21st marked on my calendar because I'm desperate for the light to return. Although we still have to get through January and February at least we know that longer days are coming.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Fri 20-Dec-24 20:23:04

Same to you paddyanne. All the very best to you and yours.
It just feels so good to turn the corner on winter doesn’t it?
