Not sure if anyone watched Casualty tonight but it was a really good episode all about the need for blood and blood donors
My Grandaughter gives blood and she has a rare component in her blood that means her blood never goes into storage but goes straight to a patient in need She went on the app as the drama finished to check what month she next gives it and there was a 20 minute wait to get on the site, so WELL DONE Casualty

Yes I watched it, good message.

Yes I watched it too. A very moving episode. My daughter and partner have been blood donors. I can't do it due to the medications I'm on and my blood group can be used by anyone.

Yes, it was an excellent episode and hopefully encouraged more donors to sign up. I'm glad they included the blood bikes chasing around the country to deliver blood to sick patients.
You must be very proud of your GD BlueBelle. Does she know each time where her blood is going?

Haven't seen it yet but I'll find it on I player, it sounds very interesting. Like Moonwatcher, I'm a universal donor as my blood is Rhesus Negative. I started giving blood aged 18, then a few years later I was found to have useful antibodies ( I'd had the Rubella injection when I started teaching) so the Blood Transfusion Service sent a car to my workplace once a month to take me to their Centre to donate blood by a process called plasmapherisis (sp?) which meant I got my red cells back and they kept the plasma. This went on for a few years until I became pregnant.
Recently I contacted the BTS after hearing radio appeals but they weren't interested because of my age.

Well done to your granddaughter, Bluebelle!

BlueBelle Sun 22-Dec-24 07:25:23

Thank you Granmarie yes she started giving blood when she was 20 a year ago and although O pos she has the ‘ro sub type’ only 2% of donors are in this catagory so very much wanted/needed
No escaped she doesn’t know the person who gets her blood but she does know it goes straight to a sickle cell sufferer

I used to give blood but then became anemic and then too old darn it I wish I could again

But it was an excellent production last night no silliness just a very well done message I hope it helps increase the blood bank

I’m a blood donor.

A couple of weeks after donating, I receive a text telling me which hospital my blood has been sent to.

I watched and thought it was excellent too. I’ve just heard my next door neighbour leave to go and donate his plasma he does it every few months and has been for years, he was disappointed to learn it’s probably his last year because he’ll be too old. I take my hat off to all those that donate.

And very relevant this time of year.

‘Give blood, the gift of life’.

I was a blood donor, as was my late husband. He managed to get his silver award and I my bronze.
After being diagnosed with RA in his early 50s, he wasn't allowed to donate.
I had a couple breaks due to pregnancies, then, eventually stopped donating as life got in the way.
I have anti Kell antibodies as a result of having a blood transfusion after the birth of my first child.
I recently contacted the transfusion service with a view to donating again, but am now considered too old.

I agree, it was well written last night and it got the message over loud and clear.

I am A+ and used to donate until I had to stop because of the medicines I was taking.

I am unsure what age is deemed "too old".

I think new donors can be accepted up to their 66th birthday.

Regular donors can donate after 70 if they are fit and well. You need to have donated in the last 2 years to be classed as ‘regular’.

BlueBelle Sun 22-Dec-24 09:53:15

I don’t think they take you at 80 though
