We have done a lot of celebrating on New Year's Eve over the years but now we prefer to have a quiet evening in. We will enjoy a lovely meal and some nice wine and be in bed before Midnight. How about you do you still like to celebrate or is that now a thing of the past?

We'd everyone out the door by 12.15 and then the tidy up began. Two dishwashers full of crockery later and we were off the bed.

Hate a messy home, can't function well in a tip. tchsmile

Our nighbours had a party last night so no driving. Had a great night but not feeling great today. Woke up with cold and no voice!!! Did not overdo the alochol last night but would have preferred hangover rather than this stinker of a cold!!!!

Two grandchildren here (11 and 17) have just surfaced, last night we ate, watched a film, Jools ushered 2025 in, it was gone 1 by the time we all got to bed, a great evening.

I still don't know what I'm wearing to my living room on New Year's eve. I might not even go.

😂😂
I went to bed at 10.30. A sure reminder of getting old, not that I really needed one! First time I haven’t stayed up for Big Ben though.
Dh followed not long afterwards.

We all stayed up until about 12.30. DC and family have all been with us for a week, although DD returns home today.

The house looks as if a bomb has hit it, but I do not really care. 2024 was not a good year in many ways, health, trying to move home, we saw children less than usual for many different reasons

2025 is opening with many problems solved and lots of meet ups already pencilled in. Of course one cannot foresee what black swans are swimming serenely towards us, although not yet in sight, but we start this year in a better position than last year.

Well, I went to bed at 9.45, read a bit then put the light out, just as DH came to bed.

Woke up, went to the loo, thinking I had missed hearing the town’s fireworks going off. It was still only 11.45!

Back to bed, must have soon gone back to sleep.

Neither DH nor I heard any fireworks, but there must have been some as the usual suspects were grumbling on the local Facebook page this morning about upset pets and wildlife.

Most respondents said ‘It was NYE, get over it!’.

(Does anyone complain about the Sydney fireworks, or the London ones?)

Me too......................

Mostly leftovers tonight! I had some pastry in the fridge, meant for more mince pies if needed, but we had enough.

So I now have a quiche pastry case (there was just enough) ready to fill later with onion, crispy streaky bacon (also leftover from 🎄), cheese, milk and eggs - we have masses of those to use up.
We’ll have it with little new potatoes and salad.

We do everything with the family over Xmas, is bloody exhausting, at NY we go to bed.
Btw all the decs and trees are down. Hate to sound like a bah humbug but am glad the hoohah is over.
Roll on spring.

No, I never celebrate it. My mnother died on this date, fifty years ago today. It will always be associated with that pain. It was only four months after my father died too.

Out for lunch for my lovely stepson's birthday, then DH and I will come back to ours. Probably nibbles and wine throughout the evening. We'll open a bottle of fizz before midnight and stand on the doorstep to raise a glass to any neighbours. Days of waiting around for taxis in the cold and wet are well behind us. NY day we'll be busy taking down all decorations and welcoming in a fresh start to the year.

Such a shame about the Edinburgh plans being cancelled. My friend was so disappointed years ago when she went up with her husband and it was all called off at the last minute for the same reason. She’s hoping to try again, but fortunately decided to go elsewhere this year. smile

We have a nice dinner and Champagne and then retire before midnight. Lovely!

We usually go to our village pub for nye , but we’ve had a busy Christmas at home and have just spent 3 days with family and just want to chill , so have friends who are neighbours coming to ours for drinks .
Tbh I’m not a nye fan , I love Christmas, but by nye I’m sick of eating , drinking and socialising.

New Years Eve in bed by 10pm with ear plugs firmly inserted. Just heard Hogmanay in Edinburgh has been cancelled this year due to the weather!

Ahh that’s a shame 😳

We're having a lovely takeaway Chinese meal followed by whatever we feel like watching on tv. Last year we actually stayed up and saw the New Year in as there was lots of music we both loved. Hoping for the same this year

Gingster Mon 30-Dec-24 18:51:05

We usually spend NYE here at our Suffolk seaside abode and it’s the same this year. We’ll have a curry and watch TV.
At midnight we go out into the garden with a glass of something to welcome in the New Year, looking out to sea and maybe catching a fireworks display along the coast.. Back indoors to a warm cosy cottage to see the London Fireworks on TV.

I was brought up in the northeast to celebrate as neighbours walked door to door calling Happy New Year. First, Dad was put outside to take the old year away and bring in the New Year with a lump of coal, a bit of bread, and a pinch of salt! Washed down with a drop of whisky!

I guess all I did has become only memories since my husband passed away in 2019. I had nobody to "first foot" for me anymore. This year, I will likely watch TV, the fireworks, and get to bed.

Happy New Year to you all!

For years, have spent NYE with close friends. Husband was late DH's best man in 1965, and it's wife's birthday on 31st. One year at theirs, one year here. I'm off to theirs in the morning.
I think it will be a quiet evening, unlike the time in about 1976 when DH became the old year, long cotton-wool beard, white sheet, scythe; best man was the new year in a big white towel nappy and a whisky bottle with a lamb's teat. There were others there that night, and a lot of booze.

I had a Scottish grandmother who lived with us so we always celebrated Hogmanay. All bills had to be paid on New Year's Eve, except obviously things like mortgages etc, so that you started each year not in debt. It's a habit I have continued and it is a great feeling to wake on Jan 1st and know you are 'sort of' starting afresh. We had the usual drinks, shortbread, cake and we watched the TV shows - much better then, in my opinion, than today. We lived in Ireland where it wasn't celebrated so much so it was a home celebration. Only in Scotland did we get the rowdy ones. The publican next door to us would come in immediately after midnight to 'first foot' my grandmother bringing with him coal, cake, drink and a coin. Taught by my grandmother, he would throw the coal on the fire with the words 'lang may your lum reek'. I still use that expression today. For those not familiar with the expression, a lum was a chimney and reek meant smoke. So, may you always be warm and healthy, have plenty to eat and drink and money for your needs. I still stay up but will be on my own as my husband retires early these days. I will Alexa my sisters and my daughters will WhatsApp me or phone on 1st. Amazing that we will be in to the quarter of the century. It seems like only yesterday we were bringing in the new millennium.
So, Happy Hogmanay/New Year to you all.

I might be too miserable to even post in this thread. We go to bed early and hope to be asleep by the time the fireworks start. Lol I'm such a scrooge.

Did all the first footing in the north east 🇬🇧 years ago. Got older but not much wiser and usually head for bed just after midnight.

We used to go out to celebrate. Now it's dinner for two and bedtime when we feel like it. I was in a charity shop this morning and everyone was saying how they disliked New Year.
