Posh……..a compliment or an insult?

My son in law used to stay with me and left some of his laundry - nothing more exciting !

I wore a twin set in the late 1950s when I was in my mid teens. My aunt made me a lovely dark turquoise tweed skirt and I wore a lilac coloured twinset over it. I loved the clolours. Never any pearls!

I laughed to myself the day my neighbour and friend introduced me to one of her friends .
I was recycling and about to garden .
I have to admit to being a casual dresser when doing chores .
The friend said ,
'You said that she was posh .I didn't realise that she was that posh .'
I was wearing one of my son's socks and one of my son in law's socks ,a loose faded top pulled over a huge bleach stain on my paint splattered tracksuit bottoms .

Not the best way to lose weight.

Ah, I think I've got it now. So, a twin set is just the top bits. I've spent my life thinking it was like a suit - a skirt bottom and matching twin jacket in the same wool!
The posh girls at uni did often come to college like that. (They had done their A levels at Cheltenham Ladies' College or Westonbirt.)

I think the twin sets I nean were revived by the posh girls around 1980 when I was at uni. A bit like the Diana/Sloane Square look with ruffled collar shirts. The tartan and tweed skirs didn't match the top half though like I assume they did in 1960? I'll look for a picture, but I'm out now until after lunch.

I think twin sets were more boring, a short-sleeved wool jumper with matching cardigan.

Having done a bit of light research, I have discovered that Elvis Presley recorded a song "High-heel Sneakers" which was released in 1964. As 'Sneakers' is the name still given to what are now called 'Trainers' in the UK, they must have been around then. Though, if my memory serves me right, they were called 'Sneakers' in the UK back then.

Incidentally I had a pair of 'Basketball Boots' back in the 1960s. They were made of canvas, had high tops, laces and had soft soles. I believe these are still around now and are usually made by 'Converse'.

Yes, I had sneakers. Just couldn't remember the name earlier. I probably wore them with jeans and a striped Breton top; that would be about 1963.

My holiday dog sitter when we lived in Yorkshire said my husband and I (southern accents) were posh 'but you're ok'. High praise indeed 🤣
