Irrational dislikes of people you don’t know..

Perhaps I shouldn’t introduce this topic, as it could get nasty. I was thinking how I have irrational dislikes of people I see on television whom I don’t know at all. Helen Skelton, Sarah Moore (from Money for Nothing), Meghan used-to-be Markle, Luke Littler. I know nothing about any of these people, but I can’t stand them.

Of course the upside of this is that I have irrational likes as well.

I have no problem with Dawn French or Alan Titchmarsh, but can't stand Monty Don!

My friend can't stand Angela Raynor as she looks so much like a girl who bullied her at school.
I dislike few people I don't actually know and come to think of it I don't dislike many people.

For years I disliked anyone called Linda as I was bullied and spat at by someone called Linda when I was at primary school. Then I met someone called Linda who became a good friend. Sadly in my last job I had a supervisor called Linda who is an absolute b***h. Everyone dislikes her who works closely with her, but she seems able to charm others who work less closely. So the jury's out on the Lindas of the world!

You are not alone; I can’t stand Jeremy Clarkson, Stephen Fry and Keir Starmer. It’s not just what they say but the way they say it. (They don’t like me either.🤣)

Amol Rajan tops my list and he has spoilt University Challenge for me.
I used to like Chris Packham when he was young on The Really Wild Show but have gone off him since he became so sanctimonious.
I don’t like Emily Maitlis or Victoria Coren Mitchell though they seem clever.
I dislike lots of TV presenters as they are so overpaid - with my hefty licence fee - and many don’t seem specially talented.

I do like Paul Martin on Flog It, though.

In real life I hardly ever dislike anyone, and if I met any of these people I would probably like them too!

When I was working I took instant dislikes to some people but when I confessed this to a colleague was told I should like them as they were all born under Sagittarius and I am an Aries! Maybe there’s more to star signs than we think!

I just really try hard not to do this. I’m not perfect but feel that I shouldn’t judge people who I don’t know.
My pet hate is any generalisation (at all really but particularly those) that involve “these people” when the speaker has never met/had any association at all with the person/group to whom they are referring.
As in my father’s recent “these people who rent property” 🙄

I don’t like Alan Titchmarsh or Charlie Dimmock either, but I thought everybody liked David Attenborough!

Yes , not liking David Attenborough is certainly a sin. It may well be a crime !!!

I don't hate but get "unsettled" by people because of their looks, mannerisms and speech
"Step back" people, they makes me recoil
David Bowie looks feral, Jack Nicholson looks not only terrifying but insane.
James Nesbit who played Pontius Pilate with his irremovable "Norn Irn" accent
Lyse Doucet who strangles every innocent vowel she encounters
Lesley Garrett who unleashes her bosom and charges up behind it and is a "singer"???
Woodentops-unmoving Suranne Jones, Christopher Eccleston
But Gordon Ramsay is amazing in his series on US restaurants and swears very little.

Naga Munchety
Michael McIntyre
Dani Menzies ( APlace in the Sun )

They seem to try too hard, and sometimes lack professionalism.

I think irrational dislikes often stem from subconscious biases or projecting our insecurities. It might happen when someone reminds us of someone who hurt us in the past or exhibits traits we suppress or dislike in ourselves. Recognizing this helps me shift toward curiosity instead of judgment. What about you—have you experienced this?

Not at all

I loathe people with a deadly loathing. Nothing whatsoever to do with any 'insecurities' I may, or may not have.

I have the ability to hate. No questions asked !
End of.

Emma Willis is my least favourite person on TV her voice is akin to someone scraping polystyrene off a wall

bobbydog24 Mon 06-Jan-25 13:36:28

Dislike Andy Peters. So smug and narcissistic and with no talent. Couple him with Loraine Kelly and tv goes off.

grammargran Mon 06-Jan-25 13:29:43

I’m more interested in how the same names keep coming up, or is it auto suggestion? That’s worth a research project in itself!

heavenlyheath Mon 06-Jan-25 13:29:27

For me its Ant & Dec and they are constantly on television. Also all those fake men and bimbos on love island etc thank goodness for the off button🤭

langelei Mon 06-Jan-25 13:24:47

And finally, after being berated by my peace loving other half, I loathe, loathe, loathe Trump and Elon Musk! I’m done complaining and off to get some lunch, or I will be in the doghouse! 😏

GrauntyHelen Mon 06-Jan-25 13:23:22

Attenborough irritates me

TanaMa Mon 06-Jan-25 13:21:47

I can't say I hate anyone but, due to their inflated egos on TV ir un the News, there are many whose voices I cannot listen to - Davina McCall, Vanessa Feltz, Joanna Lumley - as examples. However, although there are a few men I could add to the list, it is the voices of women in general on the T.V. I find makes me find the 'off' switch!!

Moggycuddler

Russell Brand.

Now he is somebody I would call an odious little creep!

undines Mon 06-Jan-25 13:15:29

Most people on the media are fake, or they would not be there. I guess you can get away with slagging off Katy Price, because of her non-woke views (I like her, but I don't always agree with her). Holly Willoughby is just ick - so insincere about Philip Schofield. Simon Cowell is a particularly nasty piece of work IMO - but then I rarely watch telly nowadays. Just don't think most of it is genuine.

Moggycuddler Mon 06-Jan-25 13:11:12

John Wayne. And Burt Reynolds.

Moggycuddler Mon 06-Jan-25 13:08:35

I think dear old Bob scores highest on this thread and another one for celebs we like, as a genuinely nice man.
A much deserved accolade.

langelei Mon 06-Jan-25 12:58:02

It’s the whole lot of fawning, adore myself, so-called insincere, unintelligent celebrities, who reap huge sums of money for doing so little to “entertain” us. There are exceptions obviously ….. Bob Mortimer for one; simply himself, natural and with great humility of himself. 🤪. I must be totally intolerant! 🫢

wibblywobblywobblebottom Mon 06-Jan-25 12:46:21

I only dislike people I have met. I understand disliking a piece of music say, which I have heard. To dislike a piece of music I haven't heard, now that's irrational. So yes you are irrational, seek help immediately.
