The two most dreary months of the year!

Chiristmas is officially nearly over, the tree is down and the decorations packed into their boxes, ready to be put back into the attic tomorrow, when according to the weather forecast it should be slightly warmer than today, and thus more pleasant to have to go out into my unheated attic.

So here I am facing January and February, the two most dreary months of the year to my mind.

No, you cannot cheer me up by saying the days are getting longer, as that will not be noticable here for a long time yet, and March is just as cold and unsettled weather-wise as January and February,

So unlike most of you, every year, I wish I could have Christmas all over again when we reach January 5th, but instead there are nearly 12 months to go.

Forgot to say that as a yorkshire woman I want my moneys worth from my plants so intend to keep living for many years. I had a great collection of auriculas, which were vry good. I bought a tree cercidifillium (not sure of spelling) wonderful heart shaped leave with purply colouring under leaves. Then it has green leaves in spring but in autumn you have a wonderful colouring autumn leaf that smells of |burnt toffee. Well I paid for that tree and it will take a while to grow to full size so must live for years to get my moneys worth!! Having a bad day and annoyed with the politicians and your brother in la? Take your secateurs out and a plastic bag. Then as you viciously snip that broken twig, you think of the brother in law and say mentally "I wish that was your leg I was cutting etc.Politicians annoying you?Snip and slash around your borders mentally saying that is you Donald Trump!! Very satisfying, as at the end you have a cleared up shed and have mentally sorted out Putin, your brother in law and any numbers of politician!! Definitely in my view becoming a gardener is a non ending joy and you can get rid of frustrations and upsets too Happy Gardening!!

I love winter, and find lengthening days rather depressing. Unusual, I know. Much prefer winter clothes, too.

Living in a warm, Mediterranean climate, I rather like winter as it is a change from the relentless heat of summer. Having said that, it never gets very cold here and there are very few days with no sun at all. I love all the seasons really.

I love them, the cold outside the warmth in. Log fires and heaps of books, going for walks and coming home with cold hands and feet and a rosy red face.

I’m with you, Monica

I’m with Monty Don - the worst two months are November and December. January and February get lighter each day and you know spring is just around the corner.

I'd like to be with Monty Don if that counts?

Very droll😂😂 and Merlotgran makes 3

In Poland there are really the 12 days of Christmas - eating visiting etc. until 6 January. Then the carnival starts and every Saturday you go to a ball. This continues until shrove Tuesday 12 midnight with the last ball. At 12 midnight they bring a huge model of a fish which is carried into the ballroom on a massive platter. The Christmas trees are kept until that day. And then it’s Lent. Thursday before it’s a doughnut day and all the patisseries sell doughnuts which are usually bought by a dozen. So there is no post Christmas 2 months of gloom. On Ash Wednesday we all eat pickled herring with sour cream. And the 6 weeks later it’s Easter and usually spring has arrived by then.

madeleine45 Some lovely ideas there, especially making notes and taking photos of my garden. It’s only small but it would help me see how far I’ve come in the last few years since we’ve been here.
I’ve taken photos to see how tall everything has grown as I thought at one bit certain things weren’t growing. I was wrong!
I planted Poppy’s last year, so can’t wait to see them. I tried to grow sweet peas last year but didn’t have much luck so might try them in a pot this year.
I love garden centres, it’s my favourite day out especially if they’re in a lovely location too. Roll on spring.

It's my birthday in early January so that's been and gone already. I used to dislike January and February but now I really like the slow days, pleasing myself as to what to do, or not do. My sewing and craft hobbies give me pleasure all year round.

Budge up.
I'll sit with Ned and Patti if there's no room on Monty's bench. They'll keep me warm.

Seasons have been here since the beginning of time and I’m not going to complain about the first two months of the year even though I don’t like the cold. I’m 75 and can remember in the winter when young we use to huddle around the open coal fire to keep warm and further back than that people had it much harder than we do today. Once New Year is over I just start to look forward at what could be is in store, I’m an optimist and always think positively and can’t be asked to waste time and energy worrying about something I have no control over.

They may well be dreary months but doesn't that make you appreciate the other ones more.

How dull if every month were the same.

Oreo Wed 08-Jan-25 15:51:55

To me it’s three dreary months as March is often freezing cold and windy.April is when I perk up😄🪻🌷

You go to a ball every week until Shrove Tuesday? That's not until the 4th March this year.

I love the idea of a ball every week through the whole of January and February! Bring it on!

I had to use my jump starter on the car this morning. I haven’t been anywhere for days and it clearly doesn’t like this freezing weather.

My car must be like me and would rather stay in bed. 😂

What a dreary and cold day it has been, and now it is snowing - unusually for us.

But the house is warm, and we have enjoyed a lazy day.

pascal30 Wed 08-Jan-25 16:23:44

we have about 2 inches of snow.. it looks magical

Barleyfields Wed 08-Jan-25 16:25:34

I enjoy these months except when it’s wet and grey, which is depressing. Today has been (literally) freezing but sunny. A bit of sunshine makes all the difference and lifts the mood. I make the most of the boost I get from days like today. Much better in my opinion than a sweltering hot summer day, I don’t do heat!

gulligranny Wed 08-Jan-25 16:36:39

I love the run-up to Christmas with all the festive lights and everywhere looking so pretty. I like January too, for me it's a great time to look forward to the year ahead (DH's birthday too, so that's always a joyful occasion). I love the trees at this time of year, I think they are at their loveliest without leaves - you can see their beautiful skeletons. And there are signs of life in the garden, shoots coming up and leaf buds emerging.

I'm not too keen on February, but at least it's short!

Cossy Wed 08-Jan-25 19:02:12

No snow at all here, just rain, rain, rain and full and cold. 🥶🥶🥶🥶

I like Spring and early summer.

We already have a few daffs in flower and loads more coming through. Our garden is weird at the moment as the Choisya has been flowering for months but the Mahonia flowers haven't actually come out yet. They've been promising for weeks but so far only a tiny yellow flower. Quite excited to see if the snowdrops will have multiplied this year as they suddenly reappeared last year after disappearing for about ten years.

Just seen Monty on the One Show. He has a new series on British gardens beginning this Friday.

January feels brighter already. 😂🍷
