It was with mine. His favourite Christmas or birthday present from me was a bottle of Pussers or Woods Navy Rum, and mine from him a bottle of Oban. I didnāt like rum and he didnāt like malt so we were safe from each other!

Loving the Whiskey a bit too much!
(41 Posts)I have been floored with a really nasty cold, sore throat and headaches.
I found Benylin was giving me awful dreams so my lovely husband has been making us hot toddies at bedtime.
Weāre using Booths hot toddy pouchettes,a very wonderful Spanish honey, hot water and some probably very expensive Scotch Whiskey.
Itās just delicious and Iām sleeping very well.
For someone who never drinks spirits I have adjusted very well!
I am having just one more this evening then thatās itā¦ā¦ā¦.or maybe it could prevent a returnš.
This is a Speyburn 10 year old malt.
Itās OK as we could bathe in Whisky/Whiskey, nobody ever knows what to buy my husband so itās always alcohol!
Nor in mine! DH always drank famous Grouse; hated the smoky island malts that I love. Theyāre a rare treat now, but my go to for a cold is sloe gin. Very good for colds.

Please donāt use good malt in a toddy - itās sacrilege.
But there's no other whisky or whiskey in our house!
And ours!

Mum gave me hot toddies as a child. Very soothing. Helped me to sleep during a heavy cold.

My late dad used to make hot buttered rum ,I haven,t had it for half a century but I seem to remember it had a lot of brown sugar in it ..and it was great for colds.Dad loved a wee tot of rum after spending the war in the navyā¦or that was his excuse.
I make toddies with Irish whiskey honey lemon and diet lemonade ..cuts down on the sugar and still works
When I was around 10/12 years old we stayed with my grandparents for Christmas and I had a hacking cough especially at night. My grandad said āIāll put a stop to thatā and he put butter, sugar and I think it was Rum and probably some water (not sure) in a saucepan as I watched him. I drank it and for the first time in weeks I slept soundly with no cough. I have always remembered that but never had the same success with all the modern medicines I have had over the years.
DP is a firm believer in the hot toddy when he has a cold/ cough, he says it makes him stop coughing and get a good nights sleep. He puts a shot of any old whisky in a mug, adds some boiled hot water and a small teaspoon of honey.

Remember our old GP telling my DH that you couldn't cure a cold, but going to bed with a hot whisky in lemon and honey and a good woman would help.....
Or maybe even a scarlet woman? š¤£š¤£š¤£
Some good home cures here š
My DM preferred daily tipple was Brandy and ginger ale. We knew she was unwell when she no longer wanted the brandy! She died soon after aged 93.
My favourite hot toddy is made with Jamesonās Irish whiskey. I make it by heating a mug of lemonade to piping hot temperature . Stick several cloves into a wedge of lemon and add to the hot lemonade together with a generous measure of whiskey.
If you donāt have lemonade then hot water and sugar to taste is fine.
Towards the end of drinking it I give the clove laden lemon wedge a squeeze with a spoon to release the remains of the lovely flavour. Itās very soothing for a sore throat š

My Dad used to have a small tot of whiskey every night before bed He lived to 92 I canāt stand the taste of any spirits they all make me shudder
Now a baileys or ginger wine I could drink like orange juice
Ooh, I've had a hot buttered rum after a day of skiing, and it was just the ticket. But I ordered it at a bar, I haven't made one; I suppose I could look it up. I believe there was cinnamon in it.
Sago, I hope you are starting to feel better.
Whisky is rather expensive especially the single malt!
If I add a splash to hot milk, I feel the need to apologise š¤£
Gripe water, which I fed to my colicky babies, contained alcohol so your GP wasn't off the mark Marmight
Grog, which was part of sailors'rations was watered rum Paddyann it was possibly sweetened with molasses.
Many of my ancestors were sailors and some left their memoirs.
I don't know the difference between Scots or Irish whiskeys but does it matter as long as it settles you when feeling poorly.
I donāt like spirits but I had a virus last year my husband made me a brandy hot toddy. I had the best sleep. I still donāt like spirits but on that occasion it did the trick.

I started buying brandy because I read that it enhanced the flavour of mushrooms, and I eat a lot of mushrooms. But I found myself adding it to a hot, sweet milky drink each night because it helped me sleep so well so I had to stop buying it. I rarely drink alcohol but if something is pleasant tasting I have as much willpower over drinking it as I have if there is. chocolate in the house. I bought some Cherry B for Christmas but it was gone by then. Iāve just remembered how much I used to love a Whiskey Mack (sp).I might treat myself to some ginger wine.
49 years ago my GP advised me to give my nb DD whisky at night to settle her colic š±. She said sheād given it to all her babies. Needless to say I didnāt follow her advice! These days I often take a glug when feeling off colour and aforementioned DD has recently discovered its benefits too! Slainte š„
I'm not recommending brandy for other people with IBS and similar illnesses !
He did examine me and it was prescribed.
I don't think that it would be today !
I used to laugh at my mother , who said that if you drink brandy warmed with sugar in a tea cup it was medicinal and not an alcoholic drink .
The only relief for me is a hot brandy toddy .I mix it with brown sugar or honey and lemon or orange juice .
Honey is preferable.
It soothes my throat and cough and makes me sleep.
Years ago , my friend's Harley Street consultant father advised me to sip diluted warm brandy and brown sugar for severe IBS .
His daughter drank it for period pain .
He was right .
It's given me relief .
I also have had a brandy toddy for nagging backache .
Ooh, sounds very tempting! I just googled how to make one and will try it out before bed!
When visiting friends in Ireland some years ago, in a cold winter, we were having hot port and brandy in just about every pub (of which there were many) As I recall, made of the p and b with hot water, lemon and sugar - a brilliant warmer-upper.
CanadianGran. I make hot toddies with a generous tot of either whisky or brandy, a teaspoon of good honey and a squeeze of fresh lemon then top it up with hot water. Stir and you're good to go. Scotch or Irish Whiskey is the traditional spirit but brandy is also quite common. I use brandy because I don't like whisky. Whether it cures a cold or not I don't know, but it makes you feel warm, soothed and sleepy and helps you forget your misery!
Oh, and by the way, we spell it as whisky as well. Most likely due to so many Scottish settlers in Canada early on.
