I never thought I would start a Meghan and Harry thread but...... had gone

It was reported today that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex had gone to Los Angeles to give comfort and food to those affected by the dreadful wildfires there.

My immediate reaction was revulsion that well known celebrities, let alone this pair, should think visiting somewhere, quite some distance from where you live that is undergoing a horrendous catastrophe, which you can do nothing to alleviate, would benefit from your presence, hugging and talking to people, and, of course, being photographed doing so.

I understand that they have offered to house someone who has been burnt out. That shouldn't be too difficult, there are plenty of A listers who have been burnt out.

How very nasty and unpleasant. I agree with Farzanah.

And agree that William and Kate, Charles and Camilla- and so many or all before them, always turned up when disaster happened, in war or other tragedies, to support local people. Can't remember any of the above posters accusing them of 'making photo opportunities'.

It seems to me that those they spoke to and recomforted seemed very grateful.

And I am no fan of them either.

I have nothing horrible to say about either of them, or haven't in the past.

They are one and wife of a number of European royals who have stepped back from royal life to lead private lives out of the public gaze, usually in the US.

Except they keep forgetting what they have done and expect to be treated as royalty. I would have been equally disgusted if any other celebrity unaffected by the tragedy had suddenly turned up in the middle of a crisis like this pressing flesh and kindly donating some food.

This is a major ongoing catastrophe with 12,000 homes destroyed at the last count and the fires still burning out of control. It is not the time or the place for minor royals or major celebrities to making photo opportunities acting like Lady Bountiful.

Hate threads generate more interest - always.

Anniebach Sun 12-Jan-25 11:46:43

One doesn’t have to meet to hear lies which are broadcasted
on national tv and radio

Ilovecheese Sun 12-Jan-25 11:44:54

Another thread started to enable posters to say horrible things about people they have never met.

Anniebach Sun 12-Jan-25 11:43:45

The king owns several properties, William and most of the family own one, several rent their homes

Oh dear! Meghan and Harry. Another excuse to knock them. If really disliked surely the best thing would be to ignore? I can’t understand the vitriol they generate from most who have never met them.

Hard to ignore them when they are headline news 🙄

Mt61 Sun 12-Jan-25 11:38:33

Absolutely 👍🏻

Any opportunity for a photo shoot 🙄
They can re-home plenty, apparently they have 16 bedrooms 😊

On that note, Charles and Camilla or William and Kate could surely house quite a few homeless people in their many properties, no?

They just can't win. As Sago says, damned if they do, damned if they don't. The Paparazzis were everywhere, like leeches, looking for photos to sell out of those people's misery, rich and poor- there is not way they could turn up and be 'discreet or anonymous'- that was just not going to happen.

Good for them for actually supporting people and doing something- rather than sit on GN and pour scorn.

Sago Sun 12-Jan-25 11:20:50

I’m not a fan but to be fair if they hadn’t done anything or done something discreetly they would have been criticised.

AGAA4 Sun 12-Jan-25 11:20:14

If Harry and Meghan are doing this out of purely unselfish reasons then well done. It is hard to believe of this publicity seeking couple, however.

Allira Sun 12-Jan-25 11:14:50

Not how the royal family visit, they do not turn up without any
pre arrangements and do not tell victims which charities to use, and certainly not a charity they formed themselves.

I thought they recommended donating to the Red Cross?

I was expecting them to do something. They’d have been heavily criticised if they hadn’t.

I wonder if Meghan’s mother, Doria, was affected?

They're not my favourite people because of their past behaviour.

However, I can't criticise them for this.
Had they sat tight in their lovely home, unaffected by this disaster, people would have been quick to point the finger.

Who is going to fancy Californian jam now!

merlotgran Sun 12-Jan-25 09:52:27

I have a teeny tiny smidgeon of sympathy for Meghan due to the unfortunate timing of her Netflix series. It’s no secret that their latest money making endeavours have failed so frolicking around in wealthy domesticity showcasing her ‘brand’ just has to succeed.

Their appearance in LA looks like getting the damage limitation in first.

Barleyfields Sun 12-Jan-25 09:50:55

I believe that charity and comfort should be given quietly and anonymously, not in a blaze of publicity. Something alien to Meghan I suspect.

Skydancer Sun 12-Jan-25 09:41:39

Probably to make them feel good about themselves.

escaped Sun 12-Jan-25 09:14:42

Doesn't their Netflix contract run out this year? I'm guessing this is their last chance to stay relevant and gain popularity, or they're stuffed.

Nannylovesshopping Sun 12-Jan-25 09:13:29

Their advice to the residents, visit the elderly, her father had
2 heart attacks and a stroke, this has caused many comments
Their visit is a celebrity visit not a royal visit

You are absolutely right here

Boz Sun 12-Jan-25 09:12:53

I laughed out loud when I saw the pictures. No Show without Punch, eh Meghan?

merlotgran Sun 12-Jan-25 09:05:48

The RF follow protocol, Harry and Meghan are instructed by their paymasters.

Oreo Sun 12-Jan-25 09:00:35

What I’m saying is, don’t turn up to hug people.Unfortunately it’s who she is and Harry meekly follows in her wake.
After losing your home and whole neighbourhood to a terrible fire do you want to be hugged by an actress?Or anyone other than your own family or friends.
