I think most of us can recall paper licence's,then credit card size and now onto your smart phones.
Article in Saturdays times, although its behind a pay wall.

Will work ok for those with a smart phone I suppose.

You will still be able to have the plastic one.
I remember my father’s little red book one, it was small with a cardboard cover.
As an aside, he also had a document that allowed him to commandeer and drive any military vehicle during WW2. I’ve no idea why! It was among his belongings, but I can’t find it now. It would have been interesting to pass it on to the War Museum.

Great, should be able to set up reminders for MOT etc I hope.

I suppose it means you'll always have it with you if it's on your phone.

My first licence was a little red book. I've still got it!

I have only ever had a paper license, haven’t moved, under 70.

I've still got a green paper licence.

Many have them here but I still like my plastic one. I’m always losing my phone, too dangerous. They don’t have paper ones, ours look like credit cards.

You can set up a reminder on the gov.uk, breakdown services or some insurance sites.

I do Elowen thanks, it’d be good to be in one place though, also could be used for ID.

You can already set up reminders for MOT on a gov.uk website

I took a photo of mine & put in my notes on my phone, handy for picking up parcels, so I suppose I already have digitally 😊

I am another who has only ever had the green paper driving license. I'm in my early/ mid 60s. My memory is still ok, so I 'recall' them perfectly.
As for the supposed advantage of being to set up reminders for MOTs with digital licenses, I find that writing such dates on an actual paper calendar has always worked just fine. 😂

Jaxjacky Sat 18-Jan-25 18:58:42

I don’t have a paper calendar Oldnproud I’m doing most things online, but thank you.

I love our traditional calendar, Jaxjacky! It never needs recharging or suddenly can't connect to the Internet when needed. I think modern technology is great when it's working as it should, but personally I still find some of the old ways of doing things more reliable overall.

Not sure where you live oldnproud but we rarely have a connection problem and we use our phone caledars exclusively.

The garage I have my cars MOT done at put a little round reminder sticker in the top right hand corner of the windscreen.

LOL at the Novelty Documents advert post just gone up - thinking "Now that might have actually come in handy 2 or 3 years ago"....

Re driving licences and mine is a modern-style one (courtesy of having swopped addresses). Though I don't actually drive, in the event, as I tried re-learning from scratch recently and errrrm...it wasnt very successful.

But I shall be keeping that driving licence permanently to use for "proof of identity" type purposes - as I'll never have anything on a smartphone (as I can't get on with smartphones).

Wondering if things like that will morph into "identity cards" per se - as I have mixed feelings about that, but it would appear to be necessary (eg given that London apparently has been found to have about half million people living there illegally) - and that's just one city (albeit our capital city).

I think everything will be on our phone Cariad in time.

I always carry my card size driving licence in my purse so always have it with me .

I will have to renew my licence again next year
