Popular names when you went to school

My daughter was friends with a family of five girls, all with names like Stevie, Toni, and male sounding names.

I always fancied being called Verity.

I wanted to have a name that could be shortened to a boys name like George in the Famous Five. I used to pretend my name was Toni, Peta or Stevie!

When I was at my all-girls school (1950s) the most usual names were Jean, Margaret, Joan, Anne, Sheila, Patricia, Barbara. At one point there were five Jeans in my form. There were some Beryls and Brendas, too. The girl whose name I most envied was called Delia.

Boys - my brother’s friends were David, Andrew, John, Peter.. I don’t remember any unusual or original boys’ names.

All the above names seem OK to me .You don't get many Sidney or Cyril these days. I had an aunt Noah! Can't
think where that came from.It seems more like an old mans name,not a womans.
Then you get a nice name like Elizabeth and it gets shortened to Lizzy! Christine shortened to Chrisy

My name in my French class was Annette.
The teacher decided we would all become a a French child in her lesson, so Annette was the name she gave me.

You were lucky - my name didn’t translate either, so my teacher named me Marie-France. I was not keen.

It sounds like a currency.

I wanted Marc for my baby, if it it was a boy, but daddy's surname was Hunt.

Not a good idea, given the essex accent.

For some reason I wanted to be called Nicola because it sounded much more interesting than my own name which I thought was boring.

Christine, Brenda, Kathleen, Ellen, Dorothy, Marion, Elizabeth, Moira, Margaret...
In fact, lots of Margarets, it was very popular name here in Scotland and it's the name of our patron saint. Last week at our Coffee morning there were four Margarets at our table of eight.

The boys were Brian, John, Kevin, William, Andrew, James, Stephen, Joseph, David and Peter.

There's a girl at The Wee Boy's primary school called Khaleesi.

I had the most unusual name in my class but we all had nicknames for each other anyway.

The boys I knew were, Tim, Kenneth, Lloyd. John, Robin and Andrew.

IIRC Christine and Linda were the most common at my (girls’) school.

I started school in 1959. Lots of Patricia, Marian, Elizabeth, Margaret , Maureen, Marie and Jane. One girl in my class had a rather exotic/unusual name of Rozelle.

The boys were all traditional names some of which are back in fashion. James, Edward, Joseph, Christopher Paul and Michael.

In my class there were Kathleen, Denise, Philippa, Glenda, Juliet, two Helens, Margaret, Valerie, Alison, Josephine, Elizabeth, Susan, Janis.
This was a girls’ high school 1960.

Boys were mostly David, Paul, Graham, Richard.
Didn’t really know many boys then!

Gillian, Susan, Valerie, Janet, Jacqueline - not my name as it’s French! I didn’t meet anyone else with the same name as me until I started work.

Boys - lots of Ian’s, Roger, John

Karen, Sharon, Lynne, Julie, Kim, Wendy, Dawn, Sian
For boys, Kevin, Stephen, Robert, Paul, David, Richard, Gary.
All now out of fashion for babies although there are still a few Roberts and Davids.

I always quietly thought that my cousins had the most boring, horrible names, but I don't know if I dare say them because I may offend a stranger, or a long lost cousin.
