How much would you pay for a coat?

Over the last decadeI spent so much time in Spanish markets and never spent more than 25€ on a handbag but I don’t blame GG for her affordable indulgence!

I once paid £120 for a stunning ivory raincoat but it worked out at less than 50p on a cost per use - I gave it to a charity shop after it went out of fashion but wish now I’d altered it into a more up to date style.

I once purchased a pair of Ugg boots, in a sale, these are the most expensive items I’ve ever bought for myself.

I’d spend up to £100 on any item of clothing, if I had the cash and it was a good quality, nice item which I needed.

Just before the pandemic, DH needed a warm jacket for a December visit to N.Y. We looked everywhere, but found nothing suitable. I spotted a Canada Goose jacket for £80 in TKMaxx, which he complained was
as too expensive. I persuaded him to buy it and he certainly didn't regret it. I saw it retailed online for £600 and he said it was the warmest jacket, he had ever worn. Wear for wear, it has paid for itself over and over again.

I can see why someone would pay what seems like an obscene amount for a jacket.
It is still going strong, apart from a new zip. That was entirely his fault, because he shut the cupboard door on it. #Mr Hash & Bash.

The most I have paid for a handbag was about £80 for a carpet handbag. It was my only winter handbag for over 25 years, so quite an economical purchase.

My current winter handbag is made from leather and is about 35 years old. It was the winter handbag I used to keep in our holiday home in France and was the only one I ever had there. It is on its last legs, and I am looking for another lifetime handbag - which will probably outlast me, but so far I have yet to see the one that makes me go YES! Oh, the leather bag cost around £30 in the sale in a French shoe warehouse.

I wouldn’t set out to buy a coat for £400, but if I really loved it, I might definitely be tempted to.

But all my coats last me years, so would still be a reasonable investment.

I wouldn't spend 400 even if I had it to spare.
It's just too much, for me, because I can't see how an item of warm clothing is worth that.

I bought this raincoat at a Craft Fair. It’s reversible. Cost silly money about £125 in the Sale. However I love it and have had lots of compliments, even from a stranger on horseback. 😳

Speaking of coats ……
These dry robes are being used around these parts as coats and I’m sure they are very costly however whenever I see this I have an irrational urge to shout No! I find them loathsome out of place!

I feel the same about Uggs.
They make people shuffle around in a knock kneed way,from what I can see, and they did (I don't know about now) cause terrible cruelty to the animals whose wool was used to make them. (Sheep, I suppose?)

I walked through Málaga airport once years ago and zoned in on a leather handbag for €1,200 (as you do). Admired it and put it back on the shelf. Enjoyed our holiday. Back at Málaga airport on our way home I had to have another look at ‘my handbag’! It was in the sale … for €400. I bought it. Much admired over the years and still have it.

Actually, I did once spend £50 on a coat, but I loved it, and I had it for many a happy year until I ate my way out of it.

I'm from a family obsessed with fabrics and know some fabrics are £100+ a metre.

If I had plenty of spare cash £400 wouldn't bother me. Plenty of coats are more than that.
Unfortunately I'm another champagne taste person!

I once bought a gorgeous coat for over 300. And that was a few years ago so goodness knows what it would cost today.

So yes, I might buy a coat for that much.

I have a lovely long, black, fur edged Windsmoor coat that my Mum bought me for one of my birthdays. It cost £300 around 16/17 years ago. It still looks as good as new and I have several friends who have put in bids for when I finally get bored with it.

Yes I have handbags that cost four figures and ditto my everyday wristwatch.
Can't remember the last time I bought a full length coat, must have been a long time ago because it is leather.
GDs spend a lot on footwear especially Ugg boots.

"Cut your coat according to cloth", well this applies to me! I bought some tweed, made in the UK, for a winter coat, ordered too little for the pattern which I was going to use! Thankfully I have another pattern which I think will do. Tweed cost about £76, ling will probably be another £30.

When I stopped work to have my first child, born in October, as I didn't drive and would be doing lots of pram pushing I set money aside to go out and buy myself a really good winter coat. It was a scarlet military style coat and cost me £20.

£20 in 1971 equates with £248.00 now, so actually thr real cost of a good winter coat has changed very little in over 50 years. It is just that inflation has devalued the currency, and at the moment many of us have yet come to terms with the price changes resulting from the recent period of high inflation.

I might add that that £20(248) coat lasted 7 years of heavy wear. I had had two children and they were both in school when I finally got it out of the wardrobe one Autumn to find that the lining was shredded and it had lost its body and gone all shapeless.

I am still intermittently wearing one of my mums favourite coats ftom the 1950s.
Good coats last if looked after.

If your son, Cabbie21 wants to spend £400 on a coat and he loves it then maybe it will last him a good few years too.
Against our better judgement we bought an "expensive" coat for our teenage son once. It was a branded one that was not as fabulous as the price tag but he really loved it. He wore it from about 15, through university (getting a bit tight(!) then it languished in his wardrobe for a while. He won't wear it again now as like your son is able to spend what he wants on coats (and is a different shape now anyway) but one of my teenage grandsons loves it - he says it looks "cool".

I saw him in it a week ago and yes, he really does!

I have recently taken my pink woollen coat which I was wearing in our wedding photos to the clothing bank. 😔
It had a couple of moth holes and I am being serious about decluttering.
I still have the dress and shoes 🤣

I have a love of Hobbs coats and buy one every three or four years in their sale. My latest one a dark fuschia colour which I love was £290. That's my limit I think.
