Spa days/breaks

My friends daughter wants to arrange a surprise spa day for her Mum’s birthday. It is awkward as I would love to be there for my friend but I just don’t like spa days just not my kind of thing. Also it is being booked at a spa I am really not keen on with very mixed reviews.

How do others feel about the whole spa thing? I am in my late 60’s and being in a swimming costume with all these other ladies fills me with horror 🙈

Spa day doesn't have to involve swimming. I've had a couple and been firmly wrapped in a voluminous dressing gown. I enjoyed it and had a very nice afternoon tea as well. You also don't necessarily hang about with lots of other women. What is it you don't fancy, apart from the swimming?

Just tell her it's not for you but you'll join them later.

Not my thing at all. I don’t like being ‘pampered’ so I don’t understand the attraction.

A Spa day or weekend is my idea of heaven.

I adore the big fluffy robes, not having to worry about what you wear or putting on makeup.

Just relaxing and hanging out with friends or family, bliss.

I like a spa break. My DD and I give them to each other as Christmas and birthday presents grin

We have a massage or a facial or a 'treatment' we fancy, use the sauna and the jacuzzi, have a swim and generally enjoy it. But there's no point if you don't fancy it..

I think I'm too old now to be bothered about what other people think when I'm in my swimming costume.

MaizieD I feel like you regarding swimwear, I can do nothing about my age, despite exercising regularly old skin is just that old skin.

People should be mindful that we all age, which is better than the alternative.

I think what is worrying me is some of the people who are going I don’t feel comfortable with. Also I thought it would be one of the lovely spa’s near us but it appears we are going cheap and cheerful and more of a gym/spa. I’m pulling out.

I absolutely ADORE spas! I’ve been to several, both for the day and overnight.

Being cocooned in a big fluffy robe, in a lovely warm environment, with tea and fresh juices, comfy chairs and nice company.

Don’t go into pools, hot tubs, saunas, steam rooms, or have any treatments if you don’t want to. Just chill with a good book xx

That does sound a bit grim 😢😢

I love a spa day and being pampered . But I get that’s it not for everyone.

I like the idea of being cocooned in a large fluffy dressing gown and reading my book😂
I think it is the venue and facilities on offer and certain people who are going that has made me uncomfortable with it all. Maybe I will book a spa of my choice with my two daughters and give it a whirl.

I love spa days, and so do the rest of the family, including several who are clinically obese.

My first visit was courtesy of Gransnet - I won a prize for a mother and daughter day at a spa near Newark, still outstandingly my favourite spa. DD is on the large size and has no worries at all about cavorting around in a swimming costume.

I might add at every spa I have visited the clientele could be described as a cross section of the female population found in any supermarket. All sizes, all shapes, plus a number of men - including DH, another whale, who also loves spas.

When we go to spas We go entirely for the water play we rarely have treatments, we have tried them, but they just do nothing for us. - and the food. Several spas have got knocked off our list because the food was more mass catering than haute cuisine.

I would rather have fewer spa days and pay more to have a truly luxurious experience and lovely food, than go more frequently and compromise on facilities. Quality over quantity every time.

I think you do right, GrannyIvy. I'd only go under those circumstances if I thought that my friend might be hurt by my absence.

I love a spa day, but it has to be a good spa. I love the steam room and the saunas and swimming outdoors in a heated pool. The best one I went to was San Pellegrino in Italy. It was very luxurious in a beautiful building, and for €70 included an amazing lunch with wine. Though it was weird to see everyone sitting at these lovely dining tables in bathrobes.

Yes I don’t want my friend to be hurt. A difficult one
