Yellow weather warnings - sensible precautions or scaremongering?

I shall look out of the window on Friday morning, then decide whether to go shopping or stay in and read my book

Last October I was flying from Ireland to England and lay awake all night expecting my drive to airport to be a disaster and my flight to he cancelled. All was fine. Except I was exhausted when I arrived in England

My weather app, allegedly giving a forecast for our village, is pretty accurate. I don’t get any scaremongering about conditions in other parts of the county as happens on the tv weather forecast.

Living only a couple of miles from the Welsh border, we get a lot of Midlands Today threats about bad weather. Most of it never comes to pass and we get whatever Wales is getting instead. I'd pay the TV forecasters according to accuracy performance. They say, "It's not a precise science," which they seem to imagine excuses the fact that they're paid nice media money to be unreliable.

I don't think the forecast covers small enough areas to give everyone an accurate forecast. Plus so much depends on whether people live by the sea, on the top of a hill, below or beside a river, etc.

The main thing we look out for is icy conditions because there are so many windy roads and hills around here so icy roads are a nightmare. Plus winds, because of the trees around the house. One of our neighbour's trees came down and nearly landed on the side of our roof during one storm.

I don’t bother with weather reports they rarely seem right
If it happens it happens, no point worrying about all the ‘what ifs’

It all looks pretty dodgy to me windpipe.

If we lived in Ireland, on a red warning, I’d pay more attention, as it is I’ll carry on Friday, out for lunch and later to the pub. We have gusts of 60mph forecast.

We live on the seafront so I do keep an eye on the weather warnings, but the ones I take most notice of are the ones the surf shops put online every day, , so I look at them if we are in for a rough spell as the are more localised and are usually quite accurate and also give the height of the tides, we have never been flooded but I just like to check ,it also gives me a chance to protect some of the pots in the garden and move anything that might blow away.

We live in a top floor flat with a flat roof above us. Our flat faces the Irish Sea so we get bombarded with all sorts of weather but we are still here.
I think the media do a lot of scaremongering. Only the other week was a headline about a threat to life as snow expected. A bit of an exaggeration as it was practically gone the next day.

I've been 😟 worrying all winter about incoming storms. None of them were as bad as predicted. I actually enjoyed being outside in some of the high winds etc. It was a lot of hype a lot of the time. Some weather stations exaggerating, to save their arsed. We don't want another MICHAEL FISH MOMENT Zdo we one weatherman said. Daft at times. Just use your loaf on the day. Love. Xx

I'm on the weather forecast every hour, obsessed you could say! The wind speeds look to be less severe than previously thought. I'm told they're southerlies for anyone interested. I'd hate to spill my cocktails on a 24-hour new ferry testing voyage to France and back! 🍸 🍹

Are you going to St malo on the new boat. We are testing it put in early March. We usually, go Portsmouth -Caen, but DH is a Naval Architect (ship designer) and cannot resist trying out a new ship.

Yes M0nica. I was feeling very lucky to have won the opportunity until the flippin' storm came along. The Bretagne will always be my favourite ship, a hard act to follow.
Ask your husband if The Saint Malo can hold fast in those conditions. I had a bad experience last year when the Pont Aven couldn't get into Plymouth because of the weather.
But I'm a bit of a daredevil at heart.

I just don’t like being out in the wind. No rational reason. It just annoys me. I don’t mind it if I’m inside. My grandad was always in a bad mood if it was windy so perhaps it’s hereditary!

I have become increasingly bothered by wind.
Never used to bother me at all years ago.
Perhaps beacuse our rooves were more secure?

Wind seems fiercer nowadays.
But that could be my misconception.

I’ve been shopping today as I’ve a class and errands to run tomorrow. I don’t like shopping in the rain. I’ve no idea why but talk of storms etc set me on edge these days.

I prefer to be warned about these things. I'll go shopping tomorrow and stay in on Friday, just in case.

Someone told me that nowadays there is more scaremongering about weather, so people are not caught out by it.
I dont know how true that is.

Personally I would rather be safe than sorry.

I think weather forecasters now are rapidly getting the reputaion of the little boy who kept calling wolf. They keep giving us these multicolour warnings and promise that Armageddon is about to decend on us, or we will be rained on non-stop for forty days and forty nights and all we get is an ordinary windy day and a few hours of rain.

The problem with constantly warning us all hell will break lose- and then it doesn't, is that one day they will be right and no one will take any notice of them.

Tomorrow I will do the weekly shop in the morning, as usual. Visit a friend in the afternoon, as usual and on Friday morning I will turn up for my appointment for an eye brow tint and trim, as booked in my and my beautician's diaries.

We've often had warnings of snow, ice, winds, heavy rain, then nothing happens. I don't take much notice of long term forecasts because things can change so much over even a few days. We drove through quite heavy snow just 5 miles away from our house some weeks ago, but there was nothing near our house. Not even rain. I do bear the warnings in mind though, and keep checking for changes.

We are driving North West on Friday to our daughters, I suspect it will be a rough journey.

The wind whistles through her 400 year old house and the poor dog gets terrified!
The children are not too happy when it’s windy either.

I can imagine us all huddled together in a power cut with the bonkers dog.

I also like to be prepared. I did an extra food shop, so I would not starve. I live in London, and it stated it would be heavy rain and very windy. The last time there was weather scaremongering, there was not a drop of rain here. It isn't easy to know what to do.
