Abominable weather

Just back from awful dog walk, absolutely necessary for the beloved spaniel, wet right through, muddy and cold wet feet, I thought where would I rather be, I have a small home in Portugal and wish I could be there rather than anywhere! Where would you like to be today?

Nannylovesshopping Wed 29-Jan-25 16:54:54

Some lovely answers here, thanks for responding, dog walk was enjoyable today, we had sunshine and spaniels feet and mine stayed dry 😀

For me, northern France. We used to have a holiday home there and it was my happy place. It didn’t matter that the weather was much like ours in Kent. To me, the sun always shone there, no matter how wet and miserable it was.

I’ve just returned from time in Australia with DD2 where despite a lot of storms, it was also hot and sunny.(yep. I’m very lucky) but how I wish I could have stayed there. Everything is so grey & depressing here be it the weather, buildings, politics or state of the NhS plus a lot more. I feel really depressed and out of sorts. The window which blew out in December and ‘replaced’ is still leaking as the wind blows the rain through it. I now have a cold thanks to the woman who coughed over me for 15 hours on the flight🤧. Maybe I’ll just hide under the dooner until Spring and better days arrive- if they do ☹️

Poor weather in NE England for a while now - grey, just grey in every shade imaginable, plus rain and temperatures hovering around zero.
I’ve DD2’s Little Dog today and tomorrow- I’ll take him out for a walk, but I’d be lying if I said I was looking forward to it!!

Browsing Cyprus for later in the year.

Sadly I think we need to brace ourselves for more awful weather. Climate change seems to bring awful extremes all over the world. I'm happy to be here as I live in an area so far free of major floods etc. When I downsize I'm aware of the need to make sure my new location is safe from such dangers, but there may be less and less places to consider. We all need to do our bit to reduce the rsk of things getting worse.

Helped by fewer people jetting off all over the world.

Perhaps you should mention that to the PM. In his first few weeks he was jetting off everywhere, he made around 17 overseas trips! Also it may help if US, China and India cut back on their emissions. And why shouldn’t people go on holiday abroad once a year if possible, they have worked for it. We go to France for the summer by car. Between us my husband and I worked for 90 years, never on benefits, I think we have earned that!

babs3 thank you. They are returning home today as power just back on. No damage thankfully. I’ll enjoy the Sun for another few days!

I AM in the Canaries, wearing a tshirt and shorts and feeling the sun on my back.
Not boasting tho as my daughter and family have had to move into our house as they have had no power since Friday and are not expected to be back on the grid until at least Thursday. (Northern Ireland). Suppose it was good timing as we’re away?!

That was good timing. Hope your daughter and family are back in their own house soon and that neither of you sustained any damages in the terrible weather.
Enjoy the sun.
😜

I wish I had a home in Portugal ... or anywhere else in Europe for that matter.

In a few weeks time I shall be sweltering in Singapore, with a part of me longing for a bit of cold weather. Not complaining as it's our choice - a 3 night stop over on the way to OZ / NZ but I really struggle in hot and humid climates. I do feel for folk who are affected by the cold and wet weather that we are having but I love our seasons, even Winter. Couldn't imagine living anywhere that didn't have seasons like we do. Looking forward to Spring but content to wrap up at the moment.

I do feel sorry for you all.

I hope you get some better weather soon. After a month of rain, storms and more rain, interspersed with frost and snow, the weather today was dry, mild and sunny, here today. Not just mild for the end of January, but mild like the end of April.

I actually managed to tidy up some pruned branches that have been lying in heaps in the garden since the beginning of November. And even better, the cats and I went for a walk together, something I have not wanted to do for ages,

I am usually happy in my own skin. I find it a fruitless exercise yearning for things I cannot have.
I am on the morning school run for 3 weeks taking my 2 youngest GDs to 2 different schools in opposite directions. Their Mum, my DD is in Cape Town (33degrees!) with work. I am seriously considering adapting my car to a hydrofoil but to answer your question. I would choose to be with and helping my family over anything else, really.

I am not loving this weather but it is january and relatively mild, thankful for that and also happy to be in the uk

My normal winter mode is hibernation and I do cosy crafts like knitting, I don`t waste my time. Today I am sorting and re-labelling all my boxes of spinning accessories, also making a comprehensive list in a notebook. It will help my AC as well as me, when it comes to clearing my house

It helps clear my thought processes before I proceed with a project that I will start soon and which will take my until next january. Using one of my wheels in my spinning wheel herd, to spin a whole jumper weight, which I will knit next winter. I was not sure which wheel to use this time but sorting my spinning items and writing things down is helping my winter brain

This month is all about paying the bills and using my stash to be mindful as I `work`

Heavy rain here in the south of wales thankfully not too windy tho 🤔

Babs03 Mon 27-Jan-25 21:20:17

No, no boasting, and of course am happy to be cosy at home in such weather, just day dreaming about warmer climes, bluer skies, carefree days.

Claremont

Family in Northern Ireland have had a dreadful time. Most roads closed and so many without power or heating for days with no sign of it returning soon.

Seems a bit insensitive to boast abour basking in the sun, probably.

Just a light hearted thread, no boasting intended😳

I think that I would feel ten years younger if I could lie on a hot beach somewhere. I used love winter when I was young.

Greenfinch Mon 27-Jan-25 17:53:00

For those who don’t like the dark evenings here is something to look forward to.

Barleyfields Mon 27-Jan-25 16:43:33

I’m another who is happy to be at home in the UK. However, I am lucky to be able to keep warm without worrying about the cost of heating and cooking a hot meal.

NonGrannyMoll Mon 27-Jan-25 16:37:34

I feel for you. We used to have a shih t'zu - nightmare to walk in bad weather, as his belly was so close to the ground and he loved to dash through undergrowth. Snow was even worse as it would cake on his underside and I had to melt it off in a warm bath (he would let me know his utter displeasure in full living colour at FFF volume!).

GrannyIvy Mon 27-Jan-25 16:31:32

I too would like to be in Portugal my home from home

Greenfinch Mon 27-Jan-25 16:30:29

Another one who is quite happy to be where I am: volunteering at my charity, warm in a big building with work to do, friends to chat to and plenty of coffee and biscuits ,watching the hail stones banging against the windows. A friend who I haven’t seen for ten years has just popped in and we have had a bit of a catch up. I couldn’t have done that if I was anywhere else but here.
