Behaviour of Celtic fans, should it be tolerated?

I was appalled to read this morning about the disgraceful behaviour of Celtic fans at last evenings Aston Villa/Celtic game.

They sang “Lizzie’s in a box” and if you hate the Royal Family clap your hands they also had banners glorifying the man who broke into Buckingham Palace decades ago.

HRH Prince of Wales was present.

This behaviour should not be tolerated, the FA and UEFA should take robust measures.

I would love to see the club severely punished for this, perhaps a big fine and no supporters allowed for so many games.

It was some weird sort of ancient deference towards an enemy Allira, he had intended to build a Stamford Bridge Statue after his victory in that battle to honour his fallen namesake, but he didn't have time to apply for the planning permission given he had to hot foot it down to Hastings, and well after that the rest is history as the saying goes.sad You might be interested to know Godwinsons Global Assets were recorded in The Doomsday Book under the newly formed Conqueror Acquisition Management Corporation.

😁

Well, he'd have been ok if Miss Reeves and Miss Rayner had been in charge of planning, he'd have got planning consent for a statue in a couple of hours and any reluctant newts and bats would have been seen off in a flash.

He really should have worn a pair of goggles then none of this Domesday Acquisitions nonsense would have happened. Greed, plus ça change, plus c'est la meme chose!

Both sets of fans have a lot to answer for.
I watched this match and tbf, I did not see or hear any of the banners or songs you have mentioned.

I'm sure there will be some sort of sanctioned handed out.

"Personally I support the Plantagenets" Shock! surely not French usurpers, playing fast and loose with our language, foisting their sewing on us, they can call it the Bayeux tapestry if they like, but it's really just a load of cartoon characters being violent, produced by French women who liked to stitch and bitch, and anyway we've got the "Sewing Bee" where people make nice non boastful garments that don't depict warfare. As if that wasn't bad enough that nosy so and so who called himself the Conqueror, came up with the Doomsday Book so he could spy on everybody and their assets., worse than the Chinese imo, just as well his reign wasn't too long, otherwise he'd have had an Alexa in every household as well as his bloody compilation of how many sheep, goats, groats and wide screen tvs there were throughout the land. Bring back Harold I say that would be one in the eye for the nation.

Love it TerriBull grin

Here's the address if you want to try and find the house when next down that way Oreo

Hardrada House,
Battle Field Farm,
Arrowhead Avenue
BishbashBosham

Don't forget to put the post code in your sat nav. AD 1066

Look out for the New King's Head on the corner of Hastings Highway, you'll find it.

😁

But why did he call it Hardrada House after his enemy?
He lived there before he bish bash boshed him.

Chardy Thu 30-Jan-25 22:33:47

I'm trying to remember when the behaviour of away fans resulted in their club being punished. Except in the event of a pitch invasion, I can't think of one.

I know several other gransnetters regularly go to football, but, in the grand scheme of things, I don't see singing a song as a big deal. And clubs with a strong religious or political history, will sing their songs.

Terribull 😁

Apparently Harold's mansion, as depicted on the Bayeux Tapestry, has just been discovered at Bosham.

How interesting, I’ve been to Bosham a couple of times, nearly got washed away by the tide.

Oh, he really was nosy then? That’s why we call him William The Conk, that explains it.🤭

Terribull thank you

Boz Thu 30-Jan-25 16:49:40

Very good Terribull.
Remember Ken Dodd's monologue on the BoH. 'Blink it out, H, blink it out'.
Just in passing, a relative at the Celtic/Villa Match last night said that Villa Supporters sang 'God Save the King' to counter the 'Lizzie' song.

I’ve seen similar behaviour at Twickenham too Terribull and at international cricket matches, there is far more TV coverage of football than cricket or rugby.

It's just sledging. Cricketers do it to each other all the time.
I am sure Prince Billy is enough of an adult to know that.
Strange how these so called Republicans go all misty eyed when they sing, 'Over the Sea to Skye,' about Scottish royalty.

😂😂😂

I expect they're just miffed because they think the Stuarts should still be the on the throne. They're still holding a grudge.

Personally, I support the Plantagenets.

TerriBull Thu 30-Jan-25 10:22:05

Whilst I agree that football fans, at times can behave in a very unruly way. I used to live near Twickenham and there was some pretty horrible drunken behaviour in the aftermath of those matches by some rugby fans too. We were eating in our favourite Indian restaurant, early evening, some families with children. A table of rugby fans, well oiled, rolled in, foul language and pretty disrespectful to the waiting staff. Ruined most diners out for a meal experience. Possibly there is less of pack behaviour than can terrorise those who find themselves around them, or indeed the sectarianism that pertains in Scotland. Personally, I still don't want to be around some rugby fans displaying their worst excesses either.

Homestead62 Thu 30-Jan-25 10:11:33

Cherrytree, you have said something which husband and I were just discussing. You don't get all this carry on at rugby matches- why? I know quite a few men up here that don't or won't follow football and it's purely down to sectarianism and the violence that often goes with it. I do wonder why rugby fans in the main, are so much better behaved.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 30-Jan-25 10:07:46

I am all for football chants & banter

The chants that Celtic use frequently regarding the Royals is neither of the above.

Indigo8 Thu 30-Jan-25 10:06:50

Much as I dislike the Royal family and everything they stand for, this behaviour should not be tolerated.

Other large sports crowds do not behave in this way. Most of the spectators have paid good money to see a football game not to have to listen to disruptive louts shouting their heads off.

Boz Thu 30-Jan-25 10:06:07

Did you know you can buy books of football chants? Some chants are crude and offensive but some are quite funny.
I always laughed at the well-dressed Jose Mourinho jibe 'Did you get your coat from Matalan'.

Cherrytree59 Thu 30-Jan-25 09:52:48

Shameful behaviour, that brings shame on their country.

Let's not dress this up ,
the bottom line is they are football hooligans .

Thankfully we will see another side of Scottish supporters, this weekend. 🏉

Galaxy Thu 30-Jan-25 09:51:03

Saying clap if you hate the royal family isnt violence.
Was there violence in the incident the OP is describing?

Claremont Thu 30-Jan-25 09:48:23

Sarnia

I love football. Chants and songs have been around for ages and are meant to wind the opposition fans right up.
For years Spurs fans called themselves the 'Yid Army'. Some might find that offensive but the supporters were happy to shout it out at matches.
A football fan will give as good as they get and accept it as part of the game. People who are offended should find something else to do.
Horses for courses really.

NO and more NO. Condoning this awful violence and secterianism is just not OK.
