Bar in Lidl

Apparently a branch of Lidl in Northern Ireland is going to open a bar.

I remember a branch of M&S had a snack bar where alcohol was served, sadly closed down now. Quite enjoyed a glass of prosecco with a lunch as an occasional treat. Obviously husband was driving

Not sure experience in Lidl would be the same. Grocery shopping is something I like to do as quickly as possible

Wondering what others think of idea
Would anyone stop for a wee drink while doing weekly shop?

Later on I was advised to avoid the supermarkets and only buy alcohol in an independent off licence where they’d be happy to serve me

When I bought alcohol in Alice Springs, in the bottle shop next to the supermarket, I had to have my passport approved by the police.

Freya5 Morrisons is still there in Gib but I don’t remember seeing a bar just a nice cafe.

Here is a photo. Perhaps they got rid of it, was a while ago.

I’m anticipating what other supermarkets are planning to add too. Also slightly worried certain type of customers that will irritate shoppers and may cause trouble.

Imagine being half cut in the "Middle Of Lidl" searching for courgettes and coming out with a kayak and a fishing rod instead.

grin grin

it would be disastrous

It’s not obligatory to drink alcohol in a bar, there are plenty of low or no alcohol drinks available in most of them, my usual half of shandy would be fine.

Well one would hope they would have more sense but we will see

Hmmm, hate to be a kill joy, but seeing as most people drive to a supermarket and may go alone, isn’t this going to increase the number of over the limit drivers?
Not everyone has a spouse to go with them.

*Supermarkets/Shopping centres in NI still don't open till 1pm on a Sunday!!!! Although local shops (Spar etc open all day) . No idea why*

Presbyterianism, like the Wee Frees in Scotland, is my guess.

I think it's to allow the staff to go to church without losing their job.
Seems reasonable to me.
There is more to life than getting and spending every hour of every day.

I think my problem would be climbing up onto those uncomfortable bar stools they provide!

…and falling off them on the way down.😄

In fact any bar or cafe in a supermarket would be useful for parking the man in your life, then he couldn’t trail after you putting unwanted items in the trolley or ask why you’re buying something.

Then you'd end up with an inebriated man to deal with along with every other bum-ache that goes with supermarket shopping.

Fortunately I can trust DP to just have the one drink. He could sip it happily while reading the paper.

Will there also be toilet facilities?

I think there has to be in a place where food and drink are served, so that people can wash their hands.

A local Waitrose has a Bar and a Bistro. It’s not for me - and neither seems busy when I have been in there - but some people may enjoy them.

Why not? I was recently on Porto in a large beautiful food market. So many people walking around with a glass of wine. I thought it was a great place, what a lovely shopping experience.

Can't see the same attraction with Lidl, but I can in Waitrose and M&S as long as you don't drive.

Yes I was quite disappointed when the one in M&S closed
I have no idea why, as it was always busy, quite often had to wait for a seat.

A bar in a supermarket in Northern Ireland?

Blimey!Things have changed since my first visit to Co. Down about 25 years ago when I went to Tesco to buy some wine to take to a party. I was almost spat at by the woman at the checkout who told me to take my alcohol to the end aisle which was segregated by being taped off!

I was glared ant and practically shoved through as though I was the anti-Christ.

Later on I was advised to avoid the supermarkets and only buy alcohol in an independent off licence where they’d be happy to serve me!

If I want a drink during the day, I prefer somewhere with a better atmosphere than a supermarket add-on. Still, some people like a drink wherever they are, I suppose. I see it all the time - just give them one of the usual hook-words* and they'll follow like lemmings off a cliff.
* Prosecco (or any other well-known wine name), meet-up-with-the-girls, me-time, quick tipple ha-ha-ha, bubbly . . . .

Drink driving comes to mind 😱. Bonkers idea.

One of the few joys of no longer being able to drive then.....

Ridiculous idea. There are so many places like pubs clubs and off licences to buy/drink booze and too many alcoholics causing trouble in public.

Shelflife Fri 31-Jan-25 10:44:15

Probably in the minority but think this is a ridiculous idea!! Lots of places to have alcohol without having to drink in a supermarket!!!!!!
