Talking of smells………

Avon’s honeysuckle cream perfume used by nasty grandmother in the 60’s or early 70’s. It was in a little round glass pot with a golden yellow plastic lid moulded with a honeysuckle sprig. I wish they still made it.

I've looked and looked several times.

Fairy washing up liquid transports me straight back to the nausea of early pregnancy...

My late Father, and Dove soap.

Imperial Leather soap, a long ago lover.

Turpentine and oil paint takes me straight back to my dad's studio although I was only two years of age then. I spent most of my days in there while my mum worked as a waitress. A large cardboard box served as a playpen.

Bronnley lavender soap - I bought it as a little luxury to take into hospital (hysterectomy op). The nurse who helped me wash myself afterwards called all the others over to smell my gorgeous soap!
Raw ripe plums - Grandad's smallholding, shinning up the huge Bramley tree, dropping onto the barn roof & filching fresh plums laid out on sacking to dry.
L'Aimant perfume - a less wonderful memory, as it meant my mother was in the room and I was certain to be getting a hard time very soon for some misdemeanour or other.

Calendargirl, a bit off the point, but when I had my second baby , a girl in the ward called her bab Khadine after the perfume, bet there aren’t many of those around.

Morny 'Sandalwood' always remindsme of a much loved grandmother.

The scent of frangpani always reminds me of childhood years spent in Singapore and Malaya (as it was)

Wet dog smell which I liked as my Aunt had some kind of enormous hound, a bit fat and unfit with a sad face, it was very cuddly and friendly but had to stay in the garden or kennel a lot as wasn’t allowed in the house much.It did have a nice easy life tho, had walks and a big garden and all the neighbours loved it and gave it little treats which explained the fatness.
If I smell a friend’s dog on a rainy day ( why do they always shake themselves next to me?) it takes me back to being about seven years old and nestling up to Teddy, fat, damp and golden coloured dog.

TCP liquid reminds me of the first-aid box in school!

Mine is the smell of chamomile - laying in long grass looking at the blue sky and smelling the chamomile I had crushed.

It immediately takes me back to childhood.

My mum always used Palmolive soap so reminds me of her if I smell it.

TCP reminds me of a school trip to Switzerland, back in the 60s. Each student had to take a mini first aid kit, mine included TCP which spilt in my case!

Lavender was my Grandmother's favourite scent and colour too. It is also mine.

Ah Germolene!

Of course it’s in a tube now, but I remember it being in a small cream coloured tin and I still use it…..

My gran used 4711 too, sometimes when I see it on the shelf in Boots, I have a little sniff!. My grandad always used Old Spice.

Germolene was a smell I associate with my father. He used it if he got cuts and grazes in the garden.
