Do you like it, and how do you like it done?
Dark/light and just buttered, or with Marmite, peanut butter, or jam and marmalade?

I love dipping buttered toast in home made soup.

I like my toast golden, no butter, thick scraping of marmite and a spread of honey. Mmmm

At the same time?! Please say not😆

I can no longer have any sort of bread ... I used to have brown with crunchy bits, buttered ... and don't like white ...but find I'm constantly finding I'm having problems with intolerance, it mucks about with my guts and, pardon me for being extremely personal, but it was always giving me non-sexual thrush, it was absolute agony, like having razors in and around there, swelling, itching etc.

When I had bread I'd always have 1/2 a slice of toast with Full English Breakfasts in cafe's but now I ask them for none and have something extra instead, like an extra tomato or something!

And I find it's the same with wraps too, and I love the Co-Op ham and cheese sub rolls, but can no longer touch those either so have totally cut out all bread completely now!

I don't want any more gut bloating or razor blades!

My fondest toast memory is, at the age of five, using my grandparents' toasting fork near to the open fire. A thick slice of their bloomer. Then spread with beef dripping with a little salt and pepper. Happy memories. Nowadays, toasted sourdough with marmite and crunchy peanut butter.

Interesting that so many of you like it burned. Is it because it has more flavour? Certainly most bread has very little taste to it, unless it's homemade.
I like a good strong marmalade on mine.

Toasted baguette with marmalade for me, nice and crunchy.

merlotgran Mon 03-Feb-25 09:01:34

I’d never even heard of eating bananas on toast before reading this thread! 😮

It’s clearly a Thing. I must give it a try. 😂

The best toast ever was in a local bakery/cafe (sadly closed now) - inch thick slices cut to order from a white loaf, medium toasted and slathered with butter. Every morning there would be customers queuing for a plate of this toast, it was absolutely divine!

Toast! I love toast, not burnt though, spread with butter, jam, peanut butter, marmite, talking of which when my son was looking at the dates on my 2 opened jars, as he's prone to when he visits, and declared "both out of date, one is 2021" shock "well I'm still here" said I "anyway ever heard of a death by marmite" "you don't want to be the first" he muttered as he disposed of themshock my marmite!

White medium slice bread, lightly toasted just cooled enough for thick salted butter cold enough to spread, thick enough for teeth marks and thin spread of marmite.

Sadly not eaten bread for 25years due to intolerance, oh but the memories if it .

Marmight Mon 03-Feb-25 07:58:28

Marmite and occasionally marmalade. .
I have yet to discover toastable bread which doesn’t shrink or disappear once buttered and marmited. Any recommendations?🤔
(My Dad always managed to burn the toast and then scraped off the burnt bits into the sink. Drove my Mum mad 😂)

Astitchintime Mon 03-Feb-25 07:44:18

My preferred slice of toast would be thick, white good quality bread slightly brown and smothered in butter. However, health dictates medium wholemeal bread and a healthy ration of butter hmm

JackyB Mon 03-Feb-25 07:28:43

Nice and hot, oozing with butter. Marmalade, jam, Marmite, honey are fine, but it's also lovely without anything.

BlueBelle Mon 03-Feb-25 07:27:30

Every morning, do it in the Airfryer and have it with butter Bovril and ginger jam on it yummmy

Bridie22 Mon 03-Feb-25 07:26:18

Lightly done with just butter or mashed banana for me.

cornergran Mon 03-Feb-25 07:23:51

At breakfast time I enjoy toast medium to well done (family say it’s burnt grin) with butter or marmalade. Never both together. Later in the day it’s toast with butter and Marmite. I get a bit nostalgic for toast made on a toasting fork over an open fire, always delicious.

pably15 Mon 03-Feb-25 00:59:51

just light brown with thinly spread marmite. or banana

Redhead56 Mon 03-Feb-25 00:47:57

Nice not too brown lots of salted butter and either a smear of Marmite or my marmalade depends what mood I’m in.

MissAdventure Sun 02-Feb-25 22:47:16

I got some ginger preserve from asda, and that was great on toast.
Big, juicy pieces of strong ginger.
I must get some more.

merlotgran Sun 02-Feb-25 22:39:54

Home baked gf bread, Lurpack lighter and marmite, peanut butter or marmalade.

Gf bread needs to be toasted dark to get the flavour.

Golden for me please, with butter with rhubarb and ginger jam.

Your’s is far too well done for me MissA.

It was "on the cusp"...

Babs03 Sun 02-Feb-25 22:01:25

I do like Nutella as well but can’t ever buy it because I will eat too much of it.
When having something savoury on top I like burnt toast with Lancashire cheese, nice and tangy, usually finished off with a blob of branston.

When my sister returned from a trip to America many years ago she introduced me to peanut butter and blackcurrant ‘jelly’ (jam) on toast. Yummy! 😋
