After last night's awful events I feel relieved to have deleted my account.

Oh, here we go.

Invitations to join Mumsnet again 😁

Tiley

I'd like to know how to delete my account with Gransnet please. Does anyone know.

I think you go on to My Gransnet at the bottom of the page and it is an option.

Article about it here

It sounds like they're having spam problems - probably need to upgrade the software and have better spam filters. Sounds awful!

I suppose this is why GN has taken away the post photo option for the time being?

People are horrible

What a shame that some sick individual ruins it for all of us and we cannot post photos on here anymore. I used to like looking at the odd photo of people’s handiwork or pets.

I'm not a member of Mumsnet but I do read the threads because it's interesting to see what is happening in other people's lives. I'm glad I missed this. I know it happens and thinking about it is bad enough without seeing actual pictures.

I used to belong to Mumsnet as this came before Gransnet. However, the format was changed and not for the better. Fortunately Gransnet has remained the same. At first I found Gransnet to be bland and not that interesting. Now it knocks spots off Mumsnet and covers a broader interest platform.

Usually I'd be saying, "Flippin eck, I miss everything, what have I missed this time?'
But I'm actually very glad to have missed those!!!

I sure hope they can deal with this properly.

The Premium option’s been there for some time. I’m okay with the free version as there aren’t many ads anyway.

Sillymoo Wed 05-Feb-25 12:26:42

Mumsnet are now making you pay or accept ads/cookies.

But you don't have to sign up to read MN.
Or GN.
Anyone anywhere can read it completely anonymously.
It concerns me sometimes that people put such a lot of detail about their lives which could identify them.

Allira Tue 04-Feb-25 23:26:34

I've got pop-ups on here inviting me to sign up to Mumsnet.

Perhaps a lot of members have deleted their accounts.

Eloethan Tue 04-Feb-25 22:52:53

Until reading this, I wasn't aware of the Mumsnet problem. It wouldn't stop me looking at Mumsnet because I think some of the threads are very interesting and posters can provide a slightly different perspective on issues than posters here. I hasten to add I like Gransnet too!

Unfortunately this sort of thing can happen on many sites but I hope Mumsnet can make the site safer.

Clearly for the actual children then they will be more damaged with real images than AI generated. The question is will it lead to more or less abuse.

I’d speculate more, not less. There’s some research about those children sized dolls leading users to progress to real children. That’s the thing, sex offenders, like other addicts, escalate

I looked at MN last night and read that no images are allowed to be on atm which is a good thing after what happened.

welbeck Tue 04-Feb-25 18:35:09

I had to stop reading the tinder dates one as I found some of the details disgusting.
I didn't find it particularly funny.
But there are still lots of threads that I do find worth reading on MN.
I don't quite understand why people delete their accounts.
You don't need an account to read the threads only to contribute.
Same as on here.
Why not just stop reading them pro tem and keep your options open.
Or is isome kind of protest signal to MNHQ ?

petra Tue 04-Feb-25 16:40:10

I read a thread last night ( tinder dates) and others.
It was one of the funniest threads ever.
I was trying to read some of them to Mr P but I couldn’t even speak. I was howling with laughter 😂

MissAdventure Tue 04-Feb-25 16:27:41

I'd just created an account as there was a particular thread I wanted/needed to join.

I still do, so will be having a look later.

Casdon Tue 04-Feb-25 16:25:02

I’m not a subscriber to Mumsnet, I just dip in when I wake up early sometimes. I noticed early this morning that it was not possible for new members to join, which I think might be one of the changes made by the mods - only accepting new subscribers when they are in the office , presumably so they can check them out. That is positive if it is what’s happened so far.

rafichagran Tue 04-Feb-25 16:18:48

I was on mumsnet Sunday and thankfully I did not see it. Its disgusting.

SueDonim Tue 04-Feb-25 16:11:14

I went onto MN yesterday after a friend had warned me about what had happened and deleted my account. It’s so horrible and vile.

BBC is now reporting on it. www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c93qw3lw4kvo

Indigo8

Delila

Indigo8, AI generated or not, the harm done to the viewer is the same, and the interest generated in those who are partial to this sort of obscenity is the same.

I personally would be more sickened by actual pictures rather than AI manipulated or generated images. Clearly you do not feel the same way as I do. You are entitled to feel as you do.

Child sexual abusers have free access to images of children being sexually abused.
Accessing AI images will have the same impact as viewing images of live children. The men (it usually is men) who are sexually attracted to babies, toddlers and children won’t remain satisfied by viewing, they’ll be looking for real live children
