M & S certainly cutting back

Just a little moan about M & S. I have been a customer of M & S for most of my adult life and I love their food halls. The changes they have put in place over many years you obviously just to have accept. I also use their credit card all of the time, I don't carry cash now at all. The benefits of their card was, to me, much appreciated paying off my weekly amount always so no 'credit' to me involved, thus to them they aren't making any 'extra' money from me as I have no credit with them, my monthly subscription fee only to be paid. Their treats over the years have always been welcomed and for the most part good. However recently thier treats have changed and today received my Reward Vouchers for being a credit card holder which is fine, however my birthday treat given annually has somewhat fallen short of a 'treat' We used to get tea and scones for 2 in their cafe, understand this has stopped due to many of their stores closing and/or new stores don't have cafes anymore. They then changed birthday treat to £15 voucher to spend on clothing but not Food Hall. Last year got a £12 voucher to use in their Food Hall which I greatly appreciated as I shop there a lot. Today I have just received my birthday treat - a voucher for 10% clothing , home or beauty. This means I have to SPEND something in order to get my 10% treat. Think they really have to look at this change, just feel it's not worth their bother in sending a voucher out to anyone given the cost of posting these days to potentially save 10%. Thoughts please!

A bit of a clue here

This is a bit off topic, so apologies for that. I suppose I could have started a new thread but as this was about 'extras' from shops thought I could put it here.

For those who don't know you can now lock your Nectar card to stop anyone spending your points. Just go into the Nectar app or into your Nectar account online. You jus unlock it when you want to use the points.

My friend works for M&S and she has said recently that shoplifting there is rife and we are all paying the price for that with increased costs.

Every time I go in their food hall the prices are up even on basic items. It might explain why they cannot offer any freebies or treats any more.

I have only recently taken out an M & S credit card, that was because they emailed and said judging my expenditure through my Sparks card, I could have earned £100 worth of points in the last six months, I thought that was worth doing, so we shall see.
Nectar points are a waste of time, but nectar prices instore can give you significant savings.

My sparks offers recently don’t suit. I did get a free bottle of Prosecco for my birthday which was nice. I do use their credit card but don’t seem to get much from that. I refuse to pay a monthly fee just to get free tea vouchers etc, they make enough from me as a customer.

Don’t forget they have made money by selling your data.
Tesco and Sainsbury being the worst offenders.

I use to like these loyalty cards, my favourite being boots & Sainsburys, but now they are so annoying that you have to use them to get your food cheaper.
Why not just sell the food for a normal so that everyone can benefit- if you spend £50- £100, then giv

Because supermarkets aren’t in business to give the customer a fair deal.
Plus figures show that those with loyalty cards spend more.

But just get a card and use it. What’s stopping anyone doing that, then they can benefit from the discounts also?

Cannot see a problem with that.

Is this all you’ve got to worry about?? Really???

This is a chat forum. On this thread, folks are chatting about M&S and its loyalty scheme. It’s not a case of posters only having this to worry about (yes, really), it’s a case of some posters wishing to discuss this issue. As Nannylovesshopping says, “Just scroll on by” if it’s not your cup of tea.

I never understand why people dive into a 'chat' forum to admonish someone for not talking about serious matters!

Me neither. Just plain weird.

They had to close 11 stores in France only, and so many more all over EU.

Claremont Fri 07-Feb-25 20:50:28

M&S have suffered terribly from difficulties with shops in the EU having to close due to post Brexit costs, and huge costs in exporting to EU- which was a significant part of their business.

Just have to contradict the OP’s first post.
Icandoit says that the credit card company isn’t making money from her/him. It is, the stores pay a fee to the CC company every time it is used.

I have bought several pairs of socks from M&S lately. All heels have worn through in weeks.

Take them back & complain.

Mt61 Fri 07-Feb-25 18:40:57

Just been in Lidl & got a free grapes & free bottle of shower gel though I put that in the food bank.

Mt61 Fri 07-Feb-25 18:38:53

Sorry tap & posted too soon
Was going to say, give a decent freebie when the customer has spent a good bit.
Hate seeing folk being ripped off.

M&S have also stopped their 12 day reward at Christmas which is disappointing. Also had to return something recently for the first time ever because of poor quality.

Icandoit Fri 07-Feb-25 15:23:48

Well said Ziplok - why do some people have to be so horrible!!

Desdemona Fri 07-Feb-25 14:47:48

I haven't got the M&S credit card, just Sparks.

It is a bit of a rubbish scheme really, I might save a tiny bit here and there but fundamentally the offers are not of much use.

Why don't they allow customers to save points to get money off or redeem for free products, something like that?

pregpaws3 Fri 07-Feb-25 13:37:24

I used my birthday voucher with another that was expiring and bought 2 king size non iron duvet covers for virtually half price. As a long term buy they’ll save me a fortune in laundry
costs as I can wash them myself. No ironing which I struggle with.

One of the reasons I have the M and S credit card is for the travel insurance which, I hoped, would be in place until I’m 80. As DH has been unwell they will no longer cover us and we have to look elsewhere. There wasn’t even an opportunity to pay extra. Now I will have to cancel it.

Maggiemaybe Fri 07-Feb-25 12:48:48

M & S gave me the choice of a box of grapes or box of biscuits for my birthday treat a couple of weeks ago (I was virtuous and went for the grapes). It was a pleasant surprise as I don’t use them much - I really like their food but our nearest branch is only small and not very handy for where we live. I don’t have a credit card with them, this was a Sparks reward.

I stopped using Marks and Spencer a long long time ago.
