Yes.

In the kitchen and near the far end fireplace.

I leave one soft light on at night .
If I sleep in the pitch dark and wake up old childhood nightmares of being entombed alive recur .

I hate having the lights on during the day - gives me a headache!

Most of the time I don’t bother to put a light on at night when using the stairs

My family say I must have been a mole in a past life!

Barleyfields

I don’t have lights on unless necessary. I don’t have any lights on overnight or in a room we’re not using.

I think we feel that they are necessary.

I don't have sad but do feel my mood is lighter if my home has lights on.

Our landing is L shaped bluebelle so it requires 2.

We also have the hall light on all day with a lamp on the desk.

Our bulbs are all low energy

We turn all the other lights out when we go to bed.

I'm still using the "baby" nightlight in the landing plug socket from my daughter's toddler days. We have a tricky set of (dark) steps between the bedrooms and the toilet on one landing.

It is just enough light not to break your neck!

We plugged it in in 2000 when we moved here and it has been on ever since!

Lights are being turned off all the time in this house, I was brought up not to use unnecessary electricity, as most of us were immediately after the war, and it's stuck. Staying with friends? we always take a torch.

Lights are only on in the room we are using, but I like them to be really bright.

I’m afraid of the dark so always have the landing light on. I start to panic if it’s pitch black.

I leave the undercupboard lights on in the kitchen, which is enough to make an evening or early morning drink.
Upstairs there is a glow on the landing from the wifi booster which is enough to go to the loo in the night, and the clock radio has a low light. It doesn’t disturb me it if I am facing away from it, which I normally am.

No lights on overnight. If need to go to the bathroom in the night a light from neighbours garden offers enough light.

I suffer from vertigo from time to time if it’s dark and I enter a room it momentarily triggers that feeling. Luckily DH gets up first and sorts the kitchen and living room blinds out.

Similarly I have that same issue Greenfinch if away from home in a hotel etc.

No lights on here unless absolutely necessary. Why waste electricity, especially as it is so expensive these days? Mind you, the house next door to us has every light on all day, every day. I dread to think what their electricity bill must be like!

Greenfinch Mon 10-Feb-25 11:15:46

I like a light on when I am away from home so that I can see my way to the bathroom at night. At home there is generally enough moonlight from the en-suite window as I don’t like it pitch black.

No lights on in my house at night just a motion sensor light on the landing if I have a wakeful night. Why waste the electricity?

fancythat Mon 10-Feb-25 11:11:31

No.

It took me decades to realise that that was a big part of why I didnt sleep well. And particularly as a child.

Mum thought she was being nice and helpful, leaving the landing hall light on.
Instead, it deprived me big time of sleep.

MayBee70 Mon 10-Feb-25 11:11:17

I used to have the landing light on but now I have my LED beanie hat I put that on if I wake up.

Philippa111 Mon 10-Feb-25 11:10:37

I almost always leave a light on in the kitchen at night. It's an energy saving bulb. I feel it says to any would be intruder that someone is in the house and they could be awake.
I feel safer that way.

I don't have any lights on overnight. I have a small lamp on in my living room when it goes dusk and only have lights on in other rooms when they are needed.
I don't want to add unnecessary costs to my electricity bill.

Charleygirl5 Mon 10-Feb-25 11:09:07

I am with BlueBelle 100%. I never waste energy, it is too costly.

GrannyGravy13 Mon 10-Feb-25 11:09:03

I am scared of the dark, always have been.

Floor and under cupboard lights always on in kitchen, landing lights on from dusk to dawn.

merlotgran Mon 10-Feb-25 11:06:52

I can’t sleep unless my bedroom is pitch dark. I don’t leave any lights on whereas DD still has skirting board lights on her landing which is a throwback to when her kids were small.

BlueBelle Mon 10-Feb-25 11:04:51

No all my lights go out when I go to bed very aware of being careful with utilities I only have the light on in the room I m using others go off as I leave the room ….you are using a lot of unnecessary electricity why on earth would you have two lights on day and night ?

henetha Mon 10-Feb-25 11:02:38

I can't sleep unless there is a light on in the house. Usually the kitchen one which shines just a little into my bedroom.

kittylester Mon 10-Feb-25 11:00:18

I was remembering when I lived with my grandparents and couldn't have the hall light on to go upstairs but the landing light had to serve both areas.

I don't know if that has given rise to our habits now but....

We always have lots of lights on. We have 2 lamps on the landing which are always on (day and night) and the overhead dining room light is always on. Similarly the light in the glass drinks cupboard in the lounge (!!!)

What about you?
