Aveline I trust that isn’t a euphemism. 😂

Memories of PE lessons on the sports field practicing throwing the javelin ready for the annual Sports day. Don’t know why we all bothered as the female version of Geoff Capes won it every year.

I wasn't much good at PE but just did it because I had to. Later I found a sport I enjoyed but didn't do it at school.

Although I was a decent tennis player, I hated everything else. It was bad enough to have to walk through Durham, from school to the swimming baths. Even worse was the return journey, barely dry and with wet hair!

My friend and I were picked to be gym cupboard monitors, which also involved preparing after match refreshments for the school hockey team every other Saturday in the season.

I liked it, especially gymnastics because I did a lot of ballet and dance out of school. I was in the school swimming and cross country teams. Not so keen on ball games like netball and hockey though. The showers were horrible.

My old mum would send a note saying I had a dropped metatarsal so couldn’t do PE, my punishment was to go in the staff room and clear away all the tea and coffee mugs and wash them up. Back then would be a fog of cigarette smoke in there. I didn’t mind one bit. My best friend usually brought a note as well so would join me and hopefully we would see the new RE teacher whom we had a major crush on.

Oh I was totally hopeless. Like some sort of torture for me. I did like the black wet look shorter than shorts but they didn’t appeal when being forced to play hockey in the snow and being hit by the ankle. Abuse I guess would be the name today.

Yes there were kids who loved it when I was at school, looking forward to double PE as a kind of escape, when all I wanted to do was escape PE. One of my daughters is very sporty and loved PE, she joined the girls footy team and did very well. My OH is much the same.

Athletics was ok. I was small and skinny in those days and could run fast. Swimming was vile. The pool was a murky dark green and I couldn't swim well. Hockey was scary. A horde of screaming dervishes running towards you brandishing hockey sticks. Nope. I was in the choir, the drama group and the Scottish country dancing team so got out of pe at every opportunity

I liked it. I'm quite sporty, not academic - suited me.

I’m in the minority, I loved it, particularly hockey and athletics. We were allowed to wear swimsuits to shower, so I didn’t mind that either, my mum stitched a towel up with a drawstring at the top, and I got changed underneath it, we all did the same. How horrible to have been humiliated like that as a teenager, we didn’t realise at the time that we were lucky.

Same babs03
I was in the hockey, rounders teams. High jump champ, long jump 2nd champ, hurdles, short races. I worked hard but never hard enough for Miss, what a negative critical moaner she was. No wonder by 4th (year 10) we were all refusniks

Babs03 Wed 12-Feb-25 21:06:55

Showers were obviously a form of torture, communal, never warm, with the PE teacher whipping my towel off me as I waited to go in so I had to stand there naked.

Shinamae Wed 12-Feb-25 21:06:30

I hated it, the humiliation of never been picked first for netball always the last one when I had to go on somebody’s team
I hope they don’t do it that way now…
It stays with you that sort of humiliation..😣

@GrannyGravy not sure what your old PE teacher was like but mine - there were two - were probably better suited to being drill sergeants. They did not suffer fools gladly and would make their opinions known at the top of their voices.

The “screaming in the face” thing only started in secondary school for me, as up until then I had thought I was average if not normal.

I have since come to conclusion that those screaming PE teachers were deeply unhappy in their line of work since on discussions with fellow pupils since leaving it transpired that both the female and male “shouty” ones weren’t even qualified to teach the subject, but had it foisted on them out of necessity!

Happily We could drop it at 14 if we wanted, and so I did.
The same could be said of all the senior school mathematics teachers- they might have known their “thing” but couldn’t impart their vast knowledge effectively.
Pathetic wasn’t it😌

Loathed with a vengeance. Hid in the toilets with feet up 🆙 in case the PE teacher looked under the door.
I was never picked either, mortifying.

GrannyGravy13 Wed 12-Feb-25 20:56:39

I loathed PE at senior school, joined a local gym only to find out it was owned by my old PE teacher 🤦‍♀️

Fortunately they sold it just after I joined.

I have been a member for nearly 30 years 🏋️‍♂️🤸‍♀️🧘‍♀️

I was the nerdy child who couldn't catch a ball to save my life, so I dreaded PE. The picking of teams - nobody picked me so the PE teacher usually forced a side to take me, the screaming in my face to run or catch or do both, and the humiliation at being so very, very bad at something.
I usually got my mum to write a note.
